A bit different from what I normally do, but I love this band so I rewrote Lane Boy with guitars.

MUS1025: Digital Composition

For this assessment, I wanted to create a track that incorporated both abstract collage and beat-based music. To achieve this, I have used a combination of live and MIDI instruments, as well as samples from various sources. 

The first section of the piece features mostly ambient noise, heard over a news station report of a violent gun battle (hence the title of the track). More rhythmic parts are gradually brought into the mix, leading up to the main section at 1:20. The news report is brought back at the end of the track, on which I have used an automated ‘beat repeat’ effect to disfigure the speech. 

I used Ableton Live 9 to create this piece and have demonstrated a range of its audio effects throughout. One of the features I found most interesting and enjoyable was the software’s ‘slice to MIDI’ function. This was used to create the stuttering effect on the voice at 2:20. Elsewhere I have used EQ, compression, distortion, reverb, auto filters and many other means of sound processing to manipulate the components of my track.

I also created this artwork for the track, which is intentionally low-resolution and ‘glitchy’, as I feel it to be fitting with the piece.
