Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations" is a cornerstone of British classical music. Variation number 9 was written in honor of Elgar's friend, firm supporter, and most earnest critic, publisher August Jager. The name "Nimrod" refers to the biblical hunter of the same name, an homage to Jager's name, which is "hunter" in German. Elgar's "Nimrod" is often played as a standalone piece by orchestras all over the world, and is often thought to be the British counterpart to American composer Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings".

This arrangement is for clarinet quartet (3 soprano clarinets and 1 bass clarinet). It is technically simple enough for any proficient player, yet contains amazing emotional depth as a chorale-style work.

The Grateful Deadly (a cappella MIDI)

This piece was originally conceived for two middle school clarinetists and their teacher to play together. It is based on a piece of Gregorian chant still used in the Catholic Mass today known as "Creator of the Stars of Night". It is a melody that haunted me for a long time after hearing it sung in the Mass. The melody is featured prominently at the beginning, with each clarinetist getting a chance to play it. The piece changes to an allegro tempo and then develops the original melody. All performers must be independent rhythmically and able to play sixteenth tetrachord patterns in concert Bb Major and short melodic figures in concert G Major.

This track was my final original song project for the "Creative Experiences in Modern Band" graduate course online via Lebanon Valley College, which is part of a 12-credit Modern Band Certificate program. Aptly named "Modern Band Final Song," I decided to turn my sketchbook ideas into a song about the class, the anticipation of summer, a bit of humor, and one quip about COVID-19. This track was made completely in Mixcraft using Melodyne for pitch correction.
