Furtive is a full-gonzo polychromatic rave conjurer and a relentless creative tinkerer. A Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, and DIY underground event organizer with over a decade of experience in the studio, Furtive's production wizardry has allowed them to land releases on a variety of US and overseas labels - including their first vinyl EP in spring 2022, with another coming soon - along with a slew of tracks on VA compilations and dozens of their own self-released cuts. Furtive’s body of work comprises psychedelic warphole-diving techno, quirky and muscular electro, acerbic acid tracks, moving ambient atmospheres, and drum & bass bin-rattlers. Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and promoter/DIY organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses, where they also played a turnkey role in putting on some of the District’s zaniest techno parties. They now co-run an intimate off-the-books venue in Philly. As a DJ, they’ve supported internationally celebrated no-nonsense acts and have routinely held court in precious warehouses and dingy local watering holes - always with eclectic selections and a steadfast focus on pacing and dynamics, regularly jumping genres to build moving and impactful sets. Beyond the fog and strobe lights, Furtive creates art in a variety of mediums, including linocuts, render art, inky drawings, and occasionally tattooing.

For the 116th entry in the Honcho Podcast Series, we welcome @furtivetrax! Furtive is a full-gonzo rave conjurer and relentless creative tinkerer, intractably committed to the rave as a Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, underground event organizer, and dancer. 

A veritable product of the contemporary American underground, Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and DIY event organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses. Furtive now co-runs an intimate, blossoming off-the-books venue in Philly, and holds a radio residency at Philly scene mainstay Great Circles. Enjoy!

Honcho Podcast Series 116: Furtive

This is a mix I've sat on for a long time - nearly an entire year! On a hot August day of biking many, many miles, some incidental sweaty hijinks, and after completing work on Sympathies VII earlier in the day, this was recorded during a rampaging late-night mix session at the then still-fledgling Bounce House, Philadelphia. All alone in the sweltering warehouse space, I used the usual dancefloor speakers as overkill booth monitors and romped, recording three mixes in one night, ending with this one. 

This is, in some ways, me operating at my finest, or at least showcasing my best tendencies as a DJ: a wide range of genres, intentional progression in energy and between genres, deliberate selection, seamlessly executed eclectic stunts, a flow-state of three of four decks. It's also special to me because I happened to recreate one such dramatic stunt that I improvised when I had played in NYC earlier in the year for my Mild Fantasy record release party during a particularly emotionally turbulent period of life. The gaping dramatic, emotional moment on the dancefloor shockingly didn't clear the crowd - something that has been instructive for my growth as a DJ. 

This mix is deliberate and methodical in progressing through vibes and genres, beginning with a gentle atmospheric bath and moving into bass and wiggly  material and sunshine-y rollers before settling into a full-tilt 3+ deck techno firestorm and easing back out into some surprises and delights. expect (or don't!) wormhole techno, drum & bass, dubstep, a handful of originals, and even a glint of hyperpop.

Unvanquishable Summer (Furtive // Bounce House, August 2022)

"Leaning hard into the conceptual thrust of the Distant Signal series, Furtive weaves a sonic narrative of cosmic exploration and calamity. Pulling heavily from all stripes of lost-in-space science fiction plots, this is a non-specific tale of human optimism (or naivete) and intrepid scientific leaps leading to a terrifying confrontation with eldritch cosmic forces and the unraveling of the reality our limited human technology, science, and faith have tried to understand. This is a mix of high-impact “g-force ambient” (in Furtive’s parlance) and introspective atmospheres, a sonic ride for psychedelic explorers and dissociated adventurers, those taking (third) eye-opening sacraments to traverse the vacuum of space, the sands of the desert, the cold of night, and chasms of the heart. 

The sonic arc of this mix begins by conveying the receipt of a distant signal, a message from far within the blackness of the cosmos that suggests an intelligent alien entity is beckoning to us. In our natural human curiosity and hubris, a mission to make contact is undertaken, launching a ship with a team of top scientists, explorers, negotiators, and warriors to investigate, communicate, learn, discover, and perhaps conquer. A journey full of promise, hope, excitement, faith in humanity and our collective achievements and intentions. Their long, plodding interstellar journey encounters treacherous circumstances, leaving nerves on edge and the team rattled as they approach their destination… yet as they come up on their anticipated end point, they are overwhelmed by slack-jawed awe. Initial contact is promising and profound, unnerving but inspiring. The awe and excitement fade, quickly becoming concerning as slinking things get out of hand with spiking anxiety and desperation, an absolute moment of break-glass emergency and panic on the space station. Nothing is as expected and promised - yet fully predestined and predictable - as mysterious, otherworldly eldritch forces alter, predate, inspired, terrorize, and transform - threatening to rend cosmic reality, civilization, the foundations of our minds, knowledge, and reason as we have understood them all. Through the contortions of alien forces and life-threatening calamity, the existential threat abates. A new light shines on this portion of the universe, and a new vision of our place in the world prevails - though not destroyed, nothing is ever the same, and we can look into the cosmos with fresh eyes, of understanding, awe, fear, and faith, and beauty, rinsed clean by a narrow brush with annihilation.

About the mix: House music has always struck me as a manifestation of profound, glowing joy and being remarkably human - sometimes in sharp contrast with murkier, shadowy wormhole rave music shrouded in fog and strobe lights - perhaps the dancefloor equivalent of bubbling laughter where other dance music is whispering prayer. It's this quality of warmth that is so exciting and comforting, and allows everyone to groove and celebrate life together, that makes house music familiar and unifying. I wanted to take this energy and sensibility but make it more dreamy, gauzy, atmospheric, and decorated with some twinkling sentimentality - hence dreamier pads, emotive synths, sparkling arpeggios, some trance-adjacent leanings and references. Particularly as the seasons change and we tip over into longer days, brighter light, and the beginning of blooming, I thought to conjure a vernal haze for waking up from cold winds to new, surprising sunrays - music for jostling yourself into big smiles with thoughtful, jubilant company.

Based in Washington, DC, USA, TonalTheory is a self-taught duo producer/DJ who brings their modern take on the fusion of powerful, high-energy techno soundscapes and percussions. Lending an homage to their classical backgrounds, their versatility and vision captivate audiences of all genres of music.

With numerous local and international releases, the duo launched their own label, Undertone, in 2021. Undertone embodies their signature high-energy techno sound while bending genre boundaries and hopes to serve as a platform for like-minded producers to showcase their artistry. Recent releases from Undertone have generated support from multiple industry-leading producers. 

Their time in the studio producing cutting-edge and forward-thinking techno has earned them a place in some of the industry’s notable labels/catalogs, including You Know Who I Am EP on Das Kollektive, What Were You Thinking? EP on Divine Intervention Records, Confidential Movement EP on Say What? Records, Avoid The Light EP on SINDEX, Obscure Horizon EP on Ōtomo, and many other single releases on labels such as SUBSTANTIV, T Sessions, GRF Black, Rated Records, and many more. Their work has also been recognized and featured by Washington Post, EDM Identity, and XTINA, which added to their success as producers on the rise. Performing everywhere from warehouse raves to clubs and festivals, and headlining their own shows across North America, Europe, and Asia, their DJ sets are signified by relentless hard-hitting techno that simultaneously takes their listeners on a cathartic journey. 

Their sound has left lasting and impactful impressions in every city they have played. In addition to their headlining shows, they continued to contribute to their local community by hosting their own label nights and collaborating with various clubs in DC. They have also played support for some of the biggest names in the industry of both techno and trance alike, including Caravel, Julia Govor, Sara Landry, ØTTA, Daria Kolosova, Felicie, 
Lukas Meunier, Charlotte de Witte, Dubfire, Indira Paganotto, Tapefeed, Renegade System, John Askew, Greg Downey, David Rust, Christopher Lawrence, Alan Fitzpatrick, Nicole Moudaber, Green Velvet, Laidback Luke, Sharam, and Victor Calderone, which has solidified their presence in the scene as artists to look out for.
