Kelp Roots, the latest label concept from Seattle’s tondiue, broadcasts a new wave of aqueous, afrofuturistic dub transmissions from the Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest.

The platform’s initial departure, “Word to the Centipede”, finds tondiue emerging from a season of electroacoustic drone and nu-kosmische live performance, while guiding this energetic, freeform sonic practice into a 5 track journey of in-the-club and on-the-couch headtrips.

On the release’s leading single, Chickadee, tondiue peers through a veil of mist at one of the city’s many scenic outlooks; searching for and finding the ethereal, tectonic pulse of psychedelic dub history, and channeling this essence into a slab of organic, coastal soundsystem pressure.

"It's an honor to call Lori and Sue Ann my friends and collaborators, and a great pleasure to present this recording of our first performance in trio at the lovely Chapel Performance Space in Wallingford. 

Lori and I met on Galiano Island BC after sharing a bill at the wonderful Active / Passive festival in 2022, and quickly got to discussing potential collaborations. I have been a fan of Lori's work for years; growing up as a drone-obsessed noise-head, my everyday life on the grey eastside of Lake Washington was heavily soundtracked by Earth- most notably the 'Angels of Darkness' records featuring Lori, which catalyzed my fascination for the expansive and historic essence of Puget Sound music, to which Lori certainly is no stranger, as a key player on Nirvana's Unplugged sessions and many other storied and up-and-coming Seattle acts. Performing alongside Lori and witnessing her solo performances has been nothing short of musically enlightening, opening my mind and ear to the resonant truths found within improvised music. 

While Lori and I discussed our current inspirations and musical draws, I couldn't help but express my love for the musical and spiritual work of Don Cherry, to which Lori said, 'oh! well, if you like Don's music, you should really meet my friend Sue Ann, she was in a band with him'. 

Sue Ann Harkey's creative prowess in the 1980s Seattle and New York undergrounds cannot be overstated. As head of the multi-media cassette label and creative print outlet 'CITYZENS FOR NON-LINEAR FUTURES' (CNLF), Sue Ann and co. produced 14+ hand-painted cassette tape albums, 2 full length LPs, a number of journals, novels, and live improvisational art-music performances from 1980 on, all of which often featured elaborate handmade liner notes, print work, photography, graphic designs and collages created by Sue Ann. Primarily based in Seattle, Sue Ann's free flowing stream-of-consciousness unit and CNLF's torchbearing musical outlet 'Audio Let(t)er' caught the attention of New York avant-garde giants such as Don Cherry, Denis Charles, and John Zorn. Recorded during an eastcoast stint was the album 'It Is This It Is Not This (Neti-Neti)', featuring Sue Ann and Sharon Gannon, joined by Don Cherry, Denis Charles, and David Life. Free Improvisation in its purest form, each track was recorded in a single take and cut straight to wax. The result is a quite literal snapshot of a scene bursting with uninhibited creative expression, and a profound cultural link between Seattle and New York's free avant-garde cultures; described by future Rolling Stone and NPR writer Ann Powers as a 'philosophical and musical stew different than any other aural communication in Seattle.'

Today, Sue Ann's fabled 12 string guitar comes prepared with rods, discs, crystals and screws to elicit rich harmonic overtones truly unlike anything I have ever heard before. Upon the initial meetings and rehearsals, I immediately knew that this was a collaborator, mentor, and friend whose energy and inspiration felt like something I had been searching for for a long time. 

It's been an honor to make music and spend time with Lori and Sue Ann, two veteran experimentalists and creative giants whose work has echoed throughout the pacific northwest's underground for decades. In the past 19 months we've played music together in a handful of spaces from backyards to post-industrial sites; Look forward to more performances and a soon to follow studio album.
