In this episode we talk to the sound team behind The Beatles documentary, Get Back. The challenges they faced to get these decades old recordings into shape were immense, They were forced to develop their own software, with machine learning, to clean up the audio and the results are amazing.  In addition to audio clean up, the project presented a multitude of other hurdles as well. For our 250th episode we got one of our all-time favourite guests, Dane Davis, to come back on Tonebenders. He is going to be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MPSE Golden Reels this year, so we took the opportunity to have him walk us through his storied career.  In this episode, part one, Dane talks mostly about his long collaboration with The Wachowskis.  Starting with the indie hit film Bound, through 4 Matrix films, multiple other films and series like Sense8.  He shares how he built the relationship with the directors and what it took to keep it strong.  Look for Part 2 next week when Dane will talk about his work on other projects, including the excellent new Prime series Expats.

How much Fun would it be to have the opportunity to record one of the few working B17 "Flying Fortress" planes that are still operational? The sound team from AppleTV's "Masters Of The Air" got to do just that.  They were able put 60 microphones all over the B17, to record every part of it that made a noise.  Then they took those sounds back to the sound editorial team and turned the recordings into to the amazing sound design of the intense air battles featured in the series.  Supervising sound editor Jack Whittaker and re-recording mixers Michael Minkler & Duncan McRae tell us all about the challenges this series presented and the ways they met them.

The Listeners is a BBC series, that is not an easy project for any sound team to take on. The plot revolves around a mysterious sound that only a very small number of characters can hear, but it is intense and intrusive for those that can experience it. Over the coarse of the 4, hour long episodes, the ones that are being effected by the mysterious hum search each other out and try to band together for support.  They find relief in each other, but to the outside world they look suspiciously like a cult of people, with a loose grip on their sanity.

311 - The Sound Legacy of The John Wick Films

Hospitals are really hard to create sound design for. The walla and general soundscape of a hospital is very different than any other location, because they are dense but not necessarily loud. Plus there are lots of medical machines that need to be accounted for. In the new HBO emergency room drama, The Pitt, this challenge is amplified as the show takes place entirely inside an especially intense ER. Supervising Sound Editor Bryan Parker and Re-Recording Mixers Ed Carr & Todd Grace, tell us how they used the sounds of The PItt to increase the tension, emotions and payoffs..... all with almost no score in the series. No detail was left to chance, as a map of the fictional emergency room was used extensively by the sound team, to motivate panning and what kind of sounds are heard by the audience. The use of sound design to draw you into the story is one of The PItt's greatest triumphs.

Arcane is a ground breaking animated series, especially when it comes to how the show used music and sound design, working together, all the way through the process.  In this special conversation from the Riot Games Campus, in California, Supervising Sound Editors (Eliot Connors & Brad Beaumont) sat down with the series composers (Alex Seaver and Alex Temple) to talk about how each of their contributions, inspired the way the others approached their work. They discuss how the musical themes evolved throughout the series, how the sound design had to be based in organic sounds and their desire to make the sound live up to the impressive visuals of Arcane.
