In this episode we talk to the sound team behind The Beatles documentary, Get Back. The challenges they faced to get these decades old recordings into shape were immense, They were forced to develop their own software, with machine learning, to clean up the audio and the results are amazing.  In addition to audio clean up, the project presented a multitude of other hurdles as well. For our 250th episode we got one of our all-time favourite guests, Dane Davis, to come back on Tonebenders. He is going to be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MPSE Golden Reels this year, so we took the opportunity to have him walk us through his storied career.  In this episode, part one, Dane talks mostly about his long collaboration with The Wachowskis.  Starting with the indie hit film Bound, through 4 Matrix films, multiple other films and series like Sense8.  He shares how he built the relationship with the directors and what it took to keep it strong. How much Fun would it be to have the opportunity to record one of the few working B17 "Flying Fortress" planes that are still operational? The sound team from AppleTV's "Masters Of The Air" got to do just that.  They were able put 60 microphones all over the B17, to record every part of it that made a noise.  Then they took those sounds back to the sound editorial team and turned the recordings into to the amazing sound design of the intense air battles featured in the series.  Supervising sound editor Jack Whittaker and re-recording mixers Michael Minkler & Duncan McRae tell us all about the challenges this series presented and the ways they met them.

The Palme D’or winner from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Anora is the latest film from director Sean Baker. Anora is also one of my favourite movies of the year so far. Co-supervising sound editors (and also the re-recording mixers) Andy Hay and John Warrin discuss how they molded the sound of this film. The film was largely shot docu-style with lots of overlapping dialogue and real life sound obtrusions, and a significant amount takes place in dance clubs with loud music blaring. These combined to make sound edit and mix particularly challenging.

When Alex Garland's latest film, Civil War, was released earlier this year, there was a lot of talk about the sound design of the film and its ultra-realistic take on the sound of battle. I was invited by the sound team to come to Pinewood Studios, near London, to hear the film in the room it was mixed in. We talk about the decision process they went through to land on the innovative mix of the film. Glenn Freemantle, (Supervising Sound Editor/Sound Designer), Gillian Dodders (Supervising Dialogue/ADR Editor) and Ben Barker, (co-supervising sound editor) discuss how the sound design evolved on the mix stage, building up chaos with loop group, and their creative use of silence.

Gladiator II is the massive sequel to director Ridley Scott's award winning original film, released in 2000.  This time everything is raised up a few notches though.  The sound team of Paul Massey (Dialog/Music Re-Recording Mixer) Danny Sheehan (Supervising Sound Editor), Matt Collinge (Supervising Sound Editor & SFX/Foley Re-Recording Mixer) and Stéphane Bucher (Production Sound Mixer) had to equal, and even exceed, that levelling up with their sound work.  So much detail and effort went into making the crowd reactions in the Roman Coliseum, almost narrate the emotions of the  battles.  The production sound team and the audio post team had to work hand in hand to create this impressive feast for the ears.

Robert Egger's latest film, Nosferatu, is loaded with dread. That feeling of dread is largely delivered by the amazing sound design created by Damian Volpe (Sound Designer, Re-recording Mixer & Supervising Sound Editor), Steve Little (Supervising Sound Editor, Dialog Editor & Supervising ADR Editor) and the rest of the sound team. The Listeners is a BBC series, that is not an easy project for any sound team to take on. The plot revolves around a mysterious sound that only a very small number of characters can hear, but it is intense and intrusive for those that can experience it. For the film Becoming Led Zeppelin, a documentary about the formative years of the group, the sound of the band was one of the most important elements. Supervising Sound Editor Nick Bergh had to figure out how to get the best possible audio quality from source material that was over half a century old. From tracking down quarter inch tapes in Australia, to finding the perfect pressings of albums, and having the National Archives hand deliver historical recordings, extraordinary efforts were given to make everything in the film sound it's authentic best.
