In Hour 2 DJ Food steps up with a special 25th Anniversary mix for the Apollo record label and explained;
"It's hard to underestimate the importance and influence the Apollo label had on electronic music in the 90s, alongside Warp Records and its parent label, R&S, it released some of the most classic ambient electronica in Europe. Originally set up to release Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works vol.1' in 1992 as an alternative to the harder, clubbier sounds coming from the already well established R&S, it went on to host premier recordings from Bioshphere, David Morley, Robert Leiner, Locust and Sun Electric. 
Appearances from Global Communications, early Orbital offshoot Kinetic, The Orb, Andrea Parker, Model 500, Mixmaster Morris, Jam & Spoon, Cabaret Voltaire, John Beltran, Thomas Fehlmann, Dave Angel, Ken Ishi, Billy Ray Martin, Riz Maslen, Pete Namlook... the list reads like a who's who of electronic and ambient music.
Winding down around the early 00's it was reactivated five years ago to release new music and this year sees the 25th anniversary of the label with a reissue of 'Selected Ambient Works vol.1' already in the shops. Search for Apollo on a digital service like Beatport however and you won't find it although some of the titles are available under the R&S banner, best head to Discogs to flip through the seven pages of releases and discover the many treasures hidden in their catalogue. Or start with the mix they commissioned me to make from a personal selection of my favourites from back in the day to celebrate, which Solid Steel hosts exclusively from today."

In Hour 2 it's a mix from the excellent reissue label Athens of the North. Label owner Euan Fryer has always worked hard to find the most interesting reissue material for his label, from Deep Soul Ballads to Tropicália. His taste is driven by his record collecting, which is in turn driven by the dance floor where ultimately these records should be played (yes even the slowys!). As well as searching out old and exotic records he’s working on new music with Linkwood and several other producers and musicians. He recently co-produced ‘Galaxies Like Grains Of Sand’: a collaboration between pianist Greg Foat and Warren Hampshire from the Grammy-nominated rock band The Bees, which was released last month to critical acclaim.

 It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to play at the 20th Anniversary of Shambhala Music Festival in the amazing Fractal Forest this year. Big thanks to Rich Rich and the rest of the Fractal team for putting on the best show on earth and welcoming me into the family with open arms. After almost 2 decades of deliberation and painfully listening to "textbook" "Aussie" mixes from DJ's who aren't DJs and rappers & diggeurs who were suddenly DJs, I decided it was time I delved into the world famous Bulletproof Crates and specifically into the Aussie section to let heads know what's really up in the Antipodean crates when it comes to diggin' from a beat head perspective.

Here's 53 minutes of heavy hittin' top tier jazz, funk, soul, disco, drum breaks, post punk, electronics and some face meltin' cover versions. All cut up live in one take, by an actual DJ; break mix style with turntablist skills, on 2 turntables at the Bulletproof Lab in Brisbane on August 30th 2017.

Shouts to Giles Peterson and Mike Who for premiering the mix on Worldwide FM and a courteous fuck you to all the bullshit "labels" and record stores reissuing stuff that Aussie diggaz been diggin' before it was a #hashtag — dig under the radar and stop instagram vinyl circle jerkin' each other off — in the timeless words of DJ Premier, "ya'll are violating straight up and down".

Respect to everyone diggin' off social media who stay gritty in them dollar bins. Props to Salvos, Vinnies, Lifeline, Red Cross, RSPCA and every op shop still pricing their #vinyls for a buck or under.
