WWD Review

Premiere : VII Circle - Lone [Stem Records]

Pim van Horssen AKA SQL is back on Gem Records with 2 strong originals backed up by Steve Ward on remix duties. As expected the essential SQL ingredients funk and melody are there. But his development as an artist and a new analogue rawness are also evidently audible.  

Like many artists out there SQL is making a shift towards feeding more and more signals outside the confines of his computer into actual machines with knobs and levers on them.  Though this isn’t a guarantee for a better music, SQL has been pumping out some of his best work to date since the shift.

Dimebag Jams consist of the epic monster Dimebag which revolves around a throbbing bassline which increases in intensity as the filter is opened and layers added. It climaxes when a beautiful long pad is layered over the top for emotional content. Ruby is a beautiful pumping melodic track with loads of energy and funk. Interestingly Steve Ward skilfully blended the bassline from Dimebag with the melody from Ruby into one powerful track named after the EP.

For a little more than a decade the notorious duo known as Kotelett & Zadak has been making waves on the electronic club music scene with releases on Hi Freaks, Exploited Ghetto and Poker Flat Recordings amongst many others. So it was just a question of time until the two would touch down on Upon.You Records as well, ready to add some excellent bangers to the labels 2k19 catalogue.

The title track „Sapien“ exactly shows why Kotelett & Zadak have turned into a successful and in demand production force over many years, grabbing punters’ attention immediately with a spacial, hypnotic TechHouse attitude and a subtle, yet captivating and well trippy synth melody as a main motif that won’t leave your brains ever again.

With „Lord Buchla“ we see Kotelett & Zadak paying homage to one of the most remarkable and well known creators of modular synthesis machines, once again bringing forth a spatial, stripped down and reverberating TechHouse vibe garnished with ever morphing, precisely shaped modulations, fever’ish breakdowns and ghostly, evolving sounds floating through a sonic realm best to be described as Intelligent Techno for a dedicated crowd of underground music lovers.

On remix duties for the title track „Sapien“ is Echonomist, a seasoned craftsman of the Greek club music scene. His variation takes the original cut to a whole new level, introducing a deep, brooding vibe, busy synth bleeps and an epic, slightly oriental main motif to this rework which defo deserves an exposed spot in every peaktime set over the course of the next year orr beyond.

Finally the ‘Echonomist & Marco Resmann Remix Dub‘ of „Sapien“ keeps well up with the spatial, hypnotic vibe of this whole EP, presenting large scale build ups, busy hi-hat and shaker arrangements as well as a phenomal mid-range motif perfectly aligned with the deep, mystical undertone of the tune, bringing forth a further variation for the darkest hours of the night.
