IL CAMMINO - excerpt

ENG: Quadri was born as a reworking of the original piano version of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Musorgskij. It stands apart from both Ravel’s celebrated orchestration and the “historic” Symphonic Prog version by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. I worked on Musorgskij’s thematic materials, recomposing them into a new structure — a mini-suite that alternates reconstruction, orchestration, and authentic fragments.
At certain points, I also included a quotation from A Night on Bald Mountain, as a symbolic echo of Musorgskij’s most visionary side. The result is neither a transcription nor a mere orchestration, but a structural reinterpretation — a journey through the sonic memory of the work itself.
The SIAE officially recognized its semi-original nature, classifying it among the creative derivative works and allowing me to sign it as Musorgskij – Carnevale.

ITA: Quadri nasce come rielaborazione della versione originale per pianoforte solo di Quadri di un’esposizione di Modest Musorgskij. Diversa sia dalla celebre orchestrazione di Ravel, sia dalla “storica” versione Symphonic Prog degli Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Ho lavorato sui materiali tematici originali, ricomponendoli in una nuova struttura: una mini-suite che alterna ricomposizione, orchestrazione e frammenti autentici. Ho inserito anche una citazione da Una notte sul Monte Calvo, come richiamo simbolico al lato più visionario di Musorgskij. Il risultato non è una trascrizione né una semplice orchestrazione, ma una reinterpretazione strutturale — un viaggio nella memoria sonora dell’opera. La SIAE ne ha riconosciuto la natura semi-originale, collocandola tra le opere derivate di carattere creativo e permettendomi di firmare l’opera come Musorgskij – Carnevale.

HANDS is an album developed within Artists for Artists, a collaborative area of the ANORA Project directed by Tony Carnevale.
The album represents the evolution of over twenty-five years of formative and research-based work carried out within the ANORA Labs, grounded in the ANORA Method (Approccio NOn RAzionale), where artistic creation continues formation and becomes conscious artistic responsibility.
HANDS originated from the formative path of Stefania Graziani within the ANORA Labs and evolved into a concrete artistic collaboration with Tony Carnevale, transforming a formative relationship into shared creative responsibility. Tony Carnevale directed the project artistically, participated as co-author, and assumed responsibility for the final realization of the album. After an initial phase of shared creative development, the compositional process was further expanded and brought to completion by Tony Carnevale, who developed the orchestration, optimized the virtual instruments, and oversaw the entire technical realization of the work. The title HANDS refers to the act of making: gesture, work, care, and responsibility — the moment in which formation becomes action and experience takes shape through sound.
Within the ANORA Project, HANDS stands as both an autonomous artistic work and testimony of a method in which artistic practice grows from sustained formative relationships and shared commitment.

“Nelle Tue Mani”
Centered on a piano thematic cell around which the orchestra moves with a tightly driven rhythmic motion and, at the same time, with broad themes that interact with one another; opening piece of the CD, the title also declares the meaning of the collaborative relationship: placing oneself in the hands of the other, relying and trusting, the sense of a relationship that does not risk disappointing.

HANDS è un album sviluppato all’interno di Artists for Artists, ambito collaborativo dell’ANORA Project diretto da Tony Carnevale.
L’album rappresenta l’evoluzione di oltre venticinque anni di ricerca e lavoro formativo svolti nei Laboratori ANORA, basati sull’ANORA Method (Approccio NOn RAzionale), dove la creazione artistica è intesa come prosecuzione della formazione e diventa responsabilità artistica consapevole.
HANDS nasce dal percorso formativo di Stefania Graziani all’interno dei Laboratori ANORA e si sviluppa in una concreta collaborazione artistica con Tony Carnevale, trasformando una relazione formativa in responsabilità creativa condivisa. Tony Carnevale ha diretto artisticamente il progetto, ha partecipato come co-autore e ha assunto la responsabilità della realizzazione finale dell’album. Infatti, dopo una prima fase di sviluppo creativo condiviso, il processo compositivo è stato ulteriormente ampliato e portato a compimento da Tony Carnevale che ha sviluppato l’orchestrazione, ottimizzato gli strumenti virtuali e curato l’intera realizzazione tecnica dell’opera.
Il titolo HANDS richiama l’atto del fare: gesto, lavoro, cura e responsabilità — il momento in cui la formazione diventa azione e l’esperienza prende forma attraverso il suono.
All’interno dell’ANORA Project, HANDS si presenta come opera autonoma e come testimonianza di un metodo in cui la pratica artistica nasce da relazioni formative continuative e da un impegno condiviso.

“Nelle Tue Mani”
Incentrato su una cellula tematica del pianoforte intorno alla quale si muove l’orchestra con un andamento ritmico serrato e allo stesso tempo con temi larghi che interagiscono tra loro; brano di apertura del CD, dichiara nel titolo anche il senso del rapporto di collaborazione: mettersi nelle mani dell’altro, affidarsi e fidarsi, il senso di un rapporto che non rischia di deludere.

Mare Calmo sotto a un temporale: a thunder breaks the silence. Beneath an insistent rain, the piano moves in shadowed tones, supported by timpani and rhythmic phrases in the flute and cello. Gradually, the atmosphere opens into a dynamic crescendo, as additional instruments enter, almost suggesting a return to calm.
“Mare calmo” is not a meteorological condition, but an inner image: a state of balance constantly exposed to the storms of human relationship.
The ANORA Project continues in research, musical development and artistic creation, proposing music as a human and relational experience.

Sotto una pioggia insistente si muove il pianoforte con toni ombrosi, sostenuto dal timpano e dalle frasi ritmiche di flauto e violoncello. Progressivamente l’atmosfera si apre verso un crescendo dinamico, nel quale si aggiungono altri strumenti, quasi a voler esprimere un ritorno al sereno.
“Mare calmo” non è una condizione meteorologica, ma un’immagine interiore: uno stato di equilibrio sempre esposto ai temporali del rapporto interumano.
ANORA Project prosegue nella ricerca, nello sviluppo musicale e nella creazione artistica, proponendo la musica come esperienza umana e relazionale.

Lo Scorrere Dell'Acqua (Flowing of the Water) : a repeated sound, like a falling drop, always with the same force and the same timing. Human voices create an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The piano remains the root from which an interweaving of thematic phrases unfolds — violin, cello, oboe, flute, and duduk — in a continuous dialogue among them.

Listening Note
This piece is part of the complete album PIANO.
The work lives in its entirety on disc, as an artistic object and as a conscious act of cultural choice.
This solo piano piece was born as an improvisation, in an intimate and direct space of listening. It belongs to my modernpiano path, where writing and instant gesture meet. It is romantic in the deepest sense of the word, not as a stylistic label, but as emotional exposure, fragile and direct.
