"On ne peut pas véritablement juger un homme à ses actes passés ; j'en étais la preuve vivante. La sentinelle de faction nous salua, s'interrogea brièvement sur notre invité, puis nous laissa pénétrer dans la cour. Un couple de hiboux avait élu domicile dans l'un des arbres qui la parsemait et leurs hululements semblaient fantomatiques. Au loin, on entendait vaguement les hennissements répétés d'une jument. Certainement en train de mettre bât au milieu de la nuit.

Tout était calme et paisible, et je me surpris à laisser mon esprit dériver. Tout cet univers n'aspirait qu'à la paix. Le léger bruissement des feuilles, le sifflement du vent, et par-dessus tout le silence des hommes. Le même silence que celui qui suit la bataille, après que les hommes se soient déchaînés dans une fureur sans égal. Hanos, la troisième Lune, traversait les nuages épars du ciel nocturne et irradiait d'une pâle clarté notre monde. Elle paraissait si proche et si lumineuse.
