My buddy played this for me the other night and I was shocked. I did not recognize this killer Mos Def track that slipped past my years. This was recorded in 1997, and I can tell you with full confidence that this is a fucking timeless track. Mos Def and hip-hop in general were still in their peak back in 1997. DJ Krush is someone I’m less familiar with, though my buddy tells me he is a legend. Having Mos Def on here I am likely to believe that DJ Krush has the credentials. I’m also too lazy to do the homework now.

Mos Def formed Black Star in 1997 and this track dropped the same year, so this might even pre-date Black Star. This is probably one of Mos’ first times on wax. If you aren’t familiar, he is a legend in the hip-hop game and has also acted on television and film. He is known for being one of the best “conscious rappers” of all-time, a title given to artists who craft intelligent/profound/thoughtful lyrics over boom-bap beats.

“Shinjiro” has a classic dusty boom-bap beat that will instantly transport you to the 90’s if you remember that time. If you are born after then, you’ll still love it if you enjoy hip-hop. “Shinjiro” is a quintessential hip-hop track in every sense of the word. Mos Def gives this classic beat a few classic verses and a beautiful chorus. Kendrick Lamar might’ve been influenced by this! Peep the track to find out what I mean.
