The second DC-R broadcast comes from two active figures in Lisboa’s vibrant electronic underworld. The first 30 minutes is a cut from Van Der’s (@van.der__) recent opening set at datacentre (@datacentre___), held at @darc.desterro on 17.5.24, and comprises a few choice recordings taken from studio jams using his custom modular setup that he mixed for us live. Besides regular dj slots and live performances in Lisboa, Van Der also has his hands full at Arroz Estudios (@arrozestudios), where he manages the venue's busy events programme. 

For the final hour, Vitor Domingos aka Paixao (@paixaoooooooooo) provides us with an exclusive one-hour guest mix for DC-R. From his Beja hometown in Alentejo to Lisboa and its surroundings, Vitor has been putting in work over the past few years in promoting various club nights and festivals (e.g., @quimica_beja & @wyrd.wrld), bringing fresh artists to Portugal and supporting other local artists. He’s also been DJing extensively this year, staying attuned to new developments in (tr/)dance.

Our latest offering is based around the 18th Century story of "The Stainmore Hand", well-known in Northern English folklore.

The song's events are centred on the remote Spittal Inn, its landlord, George, the maid, Bella, and a mysterious traveller seeking shelter from the ravages of an early Winter storm.

The Storyteller :
A mile or more beyond the town where Roman beacons burned
A long established hostelry, it stands all alone
The track that marks the entrance, often missed from the road
The turnpike has fallen quiet, none will call here tonight
As the dizzy whirls of sleet announce the storm

Bella the maid dims the lamps and bolts the door
The landlord George smiles and counts his takings after Bowes Fair
The roof creaks and groans as the wind bears down from Stainmore
Alone, enclosed, they won't see another soul
As they say their prayers to save them from the storm

Waves of rain and snow spiral down
Consumed by fear & darkness, heartbeats quicken now
They're deafened by the howling screaming sound
Then it's broken by a knocking at the door
A feeble cry of "Help me" then no more

The Inn's occupants :
Who stands outside? A wet bedraggled old woman bent double no less
Come quickly inside! Dry clothes, warm milk, our Bella will help you undress

The Traveller :
"Nothing I can say can repay you for your kindness sir
I lost the track as day turned into night
A pauper's widow I, can no longer pay my way
My daughter waits in Brough for me, I'll leave you at first light"

The Occupants : 
Sit by the Fire! No payment required when we answer a traveller's distress
Before we retire - we'll see that you're well, now take what you need and God bless

The Traveller :
"Let me say again, I don't want food or drink
Despite my situation, I still retain some pride
Now talking tires me so, I beg you let me rest
Don't touch my cloak or clothing! Just take yourself to bed!"

Let all who rest be drawn into the deepest sleep
Let those who dare to stay awake, unerringly their vigils keep
Hand of glory, keep their heavy eyelids closed
Revealing hidden riches whilst your magic taper glows

Stolen from a gibbet corpse, wrapped in a funeral shroud
Dried out with saltpeter, I command thee now

Guide Your rightful owner to their rightful spoils tonight

The Storyteller:
Though she feigned to sleep, Bella watched the stranger's movements
Disturbed by their growling voice and the hood that hid their face
Surprised to see new riding boots on a pauper's wife
Then the trav'ler rose to six feet tall and slid the bolt from the door
From the folds of a steaming cloak withdrew a dead man's wizened hand
Lit the candle in its grip then the ritual began

The Traveller:

I was born on the 24th February 1950 into a musical [Brass Band] family. At 15 I worked in the local WMC's doing cover versions of the Rolling Stones, Pretty Things & old blues numbers, as THE IMAGE. The Guitarist in the band Brian Schofield was one of the best local guitarists and I learned so much from watching him play !! This line up eventually turned into the EARLY WARNING SYSTEM doing more sixties Psych/Blues and began to pick up good support slots.

In 1967 I was asked to join CKREED BLUES BAND as Singer/Harp player. The band included Dave Hewitt, later of Doc K's & Babe Ruth, and Gren Fraser later of Elias Hulk and Blow. We toured for 2 years with bands like Chicken Shack, Fleetwood Mac etc and were regulars at the legendary Builders Club in Huddersfield.

After my dad passed away in 1969 I went to London to try and "Make it" as a lot of young musicians did, I did endless auditions for bands like Uriah Heep, CMU, Mott the Hoople and King Crimson [Bob Fripp said I was great but the wrong star sign ??] I toured with IRON DUKE until 1972, included in this band early on was Laurence Juber [Wings] supporting The Herd, Yes, Black Widow, T Rex etc.

In 1975 I joined RUDY & THE ZIPPS, we toured and supported acts like Chris Spedding, Quiver, Be-Bop Deluxe, and recorded 2 sessions for EMI [Tracks like "Reborn" were written around this time]

I then had an horrific accident which squashed my middle finger, and put together with the accident at 5 years old, which took of half of my first [Bar] finger, I only had, and still have, two working fingers. Not thinking I would ever play again I sold some of my treasured Gibsons.

It took me 15 years and a kick up the arse from my two sons [now in EVILE] to develop a different style of playing I was happy with - hopefully you cant see the join !!!

In 2000 I met Andy Wells [Voyager, John Verity, Baby Taccoo, Berlin] in a Bradford Music shop, and I agreed to put some lead guitar on his "Lost the Will to Play"" album, that went so well we formed PILGRYM, initially just to record, but we released it on Transubstans Records in Sweden in 2004, with distribution through Record Heaven, to great worldwide reviews.I am lead Guitarist in PILGRYM & VELVET LAKE, currently working on re-releasing "Pilgrimage" and second PILGRYM CD "The Divide".
