In Greek mythology, Icarus is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, who dared to fly too high and too close to the sun on wings of feathers and wax. 

Daedalus had been imprisoned by King Minos of Crete within the walls of his own invention, the Labyrinth. Often depicted in art, Icarus and his father attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed by adhering feathers to a wooden frame with wax. Giving one pair to his son, Icarus' father warns him first, asking that he fly neither too low nor too high, so the sea's dampness would not clog his wings or the sun's heat melt them.

Although he was warned, Icarus was too young and too enthusiastic about flying. He got excited by the thrill of flying and carried away by the amazing feeling of freedom and started flying high to salute the sun, diving low to the sea, and then up high again. The wax in his wings melted and Icarus fell into the sea and drowned. The Icarian Sea, where he fell, was named after him and there is also a nearby small island called Icaria.

Man has forever pushed himself to the limits trying to achieve the impossible. Discoveries and inventions are perhaps man's way to escape from the mundane or simply to alter his life. Such an effort is the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, a brilliant story of how necessity facilitated the invention of something that was never meant for man and how it led to his downfall. Myth though it may be, the story of Daedalus and Icarus wants to show us that the power of man has no limits but also that we should be very careful how to use this power.
