Yoshi & Chie are friends of mine from Osaka, Japan, where I lived for a year back in 2002-03. They now live here in Toronro, where I got to know them while busking together on the street, and jamming at my house with a few other friends. Here's a medley of music from that day:

Yoshi is an incredibly talented and super creative sitar player, sometimes playing with a violin bow, or with trippy electronic effects. He participated in a performance of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band full album re-enactment here in Toronto several years ago. Together with wife Chie, who plays didgeridoo, sings, and plays various percussion and electronic effects, they form the group Kaminari. Kaminari is a very popular act performing at various music festivals around Toronto, with shows now including dancing performances by their daughter.

This is a song from their early album Triangle, where I was honoured to be asked to play the drum (djembe) part - the only other artist on the album. 

Here's a video of a show they did a while ago to give you a sense of their stuff. I just like to plug them cause they're a super nice couple and a joy to play with.

This is a toe-tapping sort of song combining amplified and acoustic instruments. A simple, fun love song about a guy who lost the love of his life for years and contented himself with doing "nothin' special"...until he and the girl randomly run into each other again. The flame is rekindled into "somethin' special”. This release is even more special as it is a remake of a previous recording that I entrusted to my "Daniels & Durgy" partner, Nat Daniels (Gentle Rain Records), to remix and produce. This song started as a recording of Computart playing the guitar and singing/whistling to a metronome, which you can find raw on his page. Having worked together before on a song called The Shining, the Frenchman reached across the pond again and asked the Yank if he would like to add anything to this. This style of music being one of Josh's favorites, he jumped at the chance. He got Ken involved right away because every great song needs a great drummer. Josh added a bass line, to which Ken added drums, to which Josh redid his bass line, as is their usual process. Josh then added the mandolin. Then, Ken added the hand drums to put the icing on the cake. Tez was generous enough to produce and mix this for us, and we feel like he got it to sound like we were all playing in the same room together. 
  We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed putting it together

[I wrote this song a long time ago, back in the ‘80s when I was living in London and signed up to EMI... it was not a ‘suitable’ song for recording back then... heh, no hooks and a loose groove..  but I unearthed it the other day and it just seemed to flow in my own wee studio.  It’s virtually all acoustic, with a light layer of synth... and a few sonic gaps filled here and there...   I played my upright piano and blended that together with the vst piano, kicked a few bottles around and then pretended my poor cello was a jazzy bass...  it gave me a great blister to play it that way!   

It feels like quite a journey, to remember this song from back in another very different part of my life and now to re-claim it... as all my own work.    :-)]
