Announcing new album ‘Strata Records – The Sound of Detroit – Reimagined by Jazzanova’, BBE Music, DJ Amir and 180 Proof records present the first single from the project, ‘Creative Musicians, featuring remixes by Waajeed and Henrik Schwarz.

‘Strata Records – The Sound of Detroit – Reimagined by Jazzanova’ is no ‘covers’ album, rather a brand-new celebration of the iconic imprint, as Jazzanova’s take on Lyman Woodard Organization’s musical manifesto ‘Creative Musicians’ makes clear from its Afrobeat-inspired horn arrangements, drum track, and syncopated tempo.

The vocalist for these sessions is Sean Haefeli, who originally hails from Indianapolis, and brings a relaxed urgency to his contributions, sounding like a young Gil Scott-Heron.

Leveraging his 20 plus year friendship with legendary Detroit DJ/Producer extraordinaire, Waajeed, Amir enlists him for a special four-to-the-floor mix that not only keeps that organic vibe but also adds a unique contemporary Detroit flavour!

Henrik Schwarz needs little introduction to fans of eclectic electronic sounds. For over thirty years, his amazing body of work has packed dancefloors worldwide. Henrik takes ‘Creative Musicians’ in a slightly different direction, retaining many of Jazzanova’s original elements while adding his signature sound to the mix, providing another dance floor scorcher!

And just to give you proper context, we have included the cult-classic, much-loved original version of ‘Creative Musicians’ by the Lyman Woodard Organization.

"Sing To Me, NED DOHENY"  (a mixtape by DJ Supermarkt for the  Lost Soul of the Westcoast)

Funny how i came across this simple but brief project from years ago! Cleaning out the external hard drive i came across this edit of the Young Disciples. One of my favorite Acid Jazz, Downtempo groups from the early 90's that i discovered via Talkin' Loud! Talkin' Loud is an amazing label that pumped out forward thinking electronic & eclectic sounds in the 90's. In the scheme of things, was the infamous Giles Peterson, "mr. world wide" to many us that check out his show from time to time.

We are finally back with another chapter of our trip to the westcoast of the late 70s/early 80s: This time we take a look at the "Ladies" of that era, who kick-started the female pop revolution. But we are not only presenting the big names like Carole King, Carly Simon or Rickie Lee Jones, Too Slow To Disco is once again unearthing lots of overlooked and lost gems of the 1970s LA music scene.

These pioneering songwriters were determined to navigate their career on their own terms, while fighting an industry that was only marginally less machismo-driven than the mafia (and in some cases involved characters from both worlds). Chauvinism was the mood music de rigueur in the record biz of the 60s and 70s, and the dawning of sexual liberation as often as not left women holding the baby. But battling through, these women writers and performers redefined what pop music could do, and in doing so, charted the path for the women that followed.

Franne Golde’s musical journey started with her working at the famous Chess Studios, learning from mainly black R&B/Blues musicians. After writing with Carole Bayer Sager (also on this compilation) for a while, she was discovered by legendary record producer Richard Perry. The first track she ever wrote for his company, was „Gettin’ ready for love“, which immediately became a hit for Diana Ross. Not bad for a start...! Her timeless place in music lovers’ affections has to be her co-write (with Dennis Lambert and Duane Hitchings) on „Don’t look any further“, recorded by Dennis Edwards. This track has since become one of the most frequently sampled tracks by rappers and dance acts worldwide, including Snoop Dogg, TLC, Tupac Shakur, Junior M.A.F.I.A. with Notorious B.I.G, Lauryn Hill and M People. When we chatted to her by phone, she mentioned that even now, when she tells people that she wrote that song, they are so surprised because that tracks sounds so „Black“, it is hard to believe a white woman of that infamous „Laurel Canyon“ hippy community wrote it.
The 80s were kind to Franne too. Smash hit „Nightshift“ by the Commodores was written by her, and tracks appear on the multi-million selling soundtracks of The Bodyguard, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2 etc... And check the sleeve notes of big contemporary artists like Christina Aguilera, the Pussycat Dolls and you’ll find Franne... But, as so often with TSTD acts, bizarrely her three solo albums never took off! The fine sound of „Frannie“ was produced by legend Karl Richardson, also responsible fort he smooth sound of the disco-era Bee Gees. For the pop quizzers: Yes, he also produced Teri De Sario’s album.

Happy birthday Charles Stepney! Here is a little mix we did back in 2007 which we think might give a little insight in the enormous creative output of the genius behind Minnie Ripperton / The Dells / Earth, Wind & Fire / Rotary Connection and many more.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I've been playing drums since the late 80s and started DJing with a friend I met at University in the early 90s. At that point I only had a handful of records - mostly albums, some borrowed from my parents collection, some that I'd been finding in second hand shops, and a few new releases. Musical styles were fairly broad, I'd been really into blues & jazz for some time, and that crossed over into the rare groove sounds that were all around London at that time, which led back to deeper funk sounds. All these styles were being heavily sampled in the contemporary hip hop of the era, so I was soon spending plenty on new hip hop whilst simultaneously trying to catch up on tracks I'd been aware of in the late 80s, and enjoyed, but hadn't been buying. Luckily, 2nd hand vinyl was plentiful and cheap in those days, so the collection was growing pretty rapidly at that time. I guess by now I have a couple of thousand 12" singles, and a similar number of albums, plus around 1000 7"s - so it takes a bit more organising these days, but it's always great to dig back through - especially for mixes like this!

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

As with a lot of people my age, 7's were some of the first records I bought as a kid, and I had my parent's old record player in my bedroom from the age of about 10. I ended up with a bunch of Beatles and Rolling Stones 45s that I'd find at jumble sales, and remember spending time with a tennis racket trying to do the Shadows dance steps like Hank Marvin. The first new record I bought was probably something by The Police or The Beat I think - both early 80s school disco favourites! The 7" was still a pop format in the early 90s, so as dance music crossed over into mainstream charts, it was still the cheapest way of getting tunes to DJ with, so I have a bunch of things from that era on 7" but not on 12". Buying Hip Hop 45s for 99p seems like only yesterday! ;)

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I had a bit of rummage through the 45 shelves and pulled a few things that I haven't played out for a while, alongside some new releases, some of my own and a couple of classics that are always in my box. The Jazzman and Now Again re-issues from the early 00s are all great - making available things that hadn't been on 45 before. Jazzman did great work in selecting some super hard-to-find library tracks, and Now Again just keep digging up the most amazing unreleased music from the 60s and 70s. I have a bit of a thing for covers of 'Tramp' and the Julie Driscoll / Brian Auger version is one of my favourites, such a lazy but irresistible groove - always gets people moving. DJ Format is always a surefire hit on the dancefloor, whether it's with his original productions or themed cut n paste megamixes, and 'Saturday Night Theme' is a great party hip hop track. Likewise, Quantic's work has covered so much ground over the last 20 years and he has a great ear for an arrangement. His cover of 'That Thing' showcases his knack in that area once again.
