Nihar Bhatt is a South-Asian American experimentalist, musician and sound designer based in San Francisco, CA. His work contributes to the modern re-invention of the "industrial music" category within a non-eurocentric and consistently anti-capitalist framework. Utilizing a combination of generative, interactive and linear sequencing methods executed through a hybrid digital-analogue setup with modular hardware at its center, Nihar often mixes the sounds and rhythms of the 21st century global supply chain with textures that evoke the dissociative, isolating and depressive effects of neo-liberal culture. The music also lingers on the romance and ecstasy of intimate connection, the virtue of rejecting professionalization and work, as well as the possibility of collective confrontation with power, forming counterpoints to a fundamentally bleak vision of our times.

Topazu (Infinite Beat) is a San Francisco-based selector. She hosted the local Infinite Beat Ambient showcase and radio show, Infinite Beat. Since 2015, the show featured producers, artists and DJs that are shaping the Bay Area sound in experimental synthesis as well as celebrated romanticism, nostalgia and cinematic themes with modern day electronics.

She has been featured DJing many local shows including: Sure Thing, Surface Tension, Honey Soundsystem and Recombinant Media Labs as well as supported many international artists such as: Wolfgang Voigt, Evigt Morker, Silent Servant, HTRK and Marie Davidson. With her interests in abstract textures, carnal rhythms and her exuberance in darker, chaotic noise, she was a featured performer for the first San Francisco edition of Mutek in 2018.

Topazu mix for Tungus and Deferral Theater

In collaboration with the Surface Tension collective, Infinite Beat Ambient created an after hours audio, visual and olfactory experience. Live performances by Bleie, Brooke Keller (odi me, Gayphextwin) and Roche. 

This live ambient DJ set was inspired by my favorite San Francisco artist and Infinite Beat collaborator, Paul Clipson, which featured a  few selections of music that he shared with me and some music that I had the honor of sharing with him. It was meant to play like a film soundtrack.

This mix is dedicated to Paul Clipson, his family and our local film/arts/music community in San Francisco.

Broadcast 8 was inspired by Wong Kar Wai’s Fallen Angels (1995). A different direction from the traditional Asian “gangster” flick, the film emphasizes on internalized dialogue and much more experimental cinematography from Christopher Doyle. Like many of Wong’s films in the 90s and early 2000s, Fallen Angels has themes of loneliness in the city, longing, desire and heartbreak.

This show explores all of these themes, mostly focusing on the character played by Michelle Reis. Often referred to as “the agent,” she wears lots of vinyl, plastic jewelry, eats lots of dumplings and is very sexy, sassy and very damaged character.

Music plays a large roll in Wong Kar Wai’s films, so a few tracks from the soundtrack were featured as well as the latest release from Oakland based techno producer Russell Butler. He has a superb new album released on Opal Tapes called God is Change.

Broadcast 13 features a focus on the new Sleeper Cell release on Lovers Rock. Called Quality of Life, Sleeper Cell is a project between long-time collaborators Ital (Daniel Martin McCormick) and San Francisco's own Earthen Sea (Jacob Long). It is a beautiful release that came from the despair, frustrations and anxiety that was felt from the aftermath of Eric Garner and many other brutal moments that have shook the American public. Quality of Life is highly recommended. 

Afterwards is a short interview with half of the Galaxy Radio crew. Smac and Un Homme shared their love of italo, darker synth-based music and some exclusive tracks from Un Homme. Enjoy.

He is my old friend, producer extraordinaire, Damon Eliza Palermo. We got to reminisce, have a laugh about old times in San Francisco and how he as a young man, growing up in Michigan, was inspired by his brother to start experimenting in dance music.

Afterwards is a rich, deeply emotional mix of some of his favorite ambient tracks and a few playful ones to keep the spirit up.

Afterwards is a solo live DJ set inspired by the bold writing of Virginie Depentes and her most popular, controversial work, Baise Moi. Not the best film, but an important one in radical feminist cinema, Baise Moi was a film adaptation of her book of the same title. Directed by her, an ex-prostitute, and porn actress/author Corine Trinh Thi, it is known as a “rape and revenge” film, though it is a far more radical depiction of the genre (which is normally directed by men). The film is an ultra violent, real sex depiction of female aggression as a reaction to the marginalization, sexual abuse and violence at the hands of hyper masculinity.

She is known as one half of the experimental duo Felidae with Beast Nest and has collaborated with many other Bay Area based producers like Nine. Now the Creatrix has ventured out of her collaborations to explore her own solo work, showcasing her emotive, sensual and often emotionally soothing techno.

We start with an exclusive mix from the producer, featuring tracks from Robert Hood, Dream 2 Science, No-Tech label head Ciarra Black and the Bay Area’s own Russell E.L. Butler.

After is a segment we like to call “girl gab,” where we navigate through topics like Boiler Room trolls, the problems of marketing women in dance music and how she thinks we can create safer spaces for women, LGBT and those that are non-binary.

Afterwards is an in-depth discussion about the past and present of Industrial music with Nine (Nihar Bhatt). As one fourth of the Surface Tension collective and through his own productions, Bhatt has been heavily involved in the local scene for several years and as an insightful perspective on how industrial music has impacted techno music today. This is the last installment of a two part series celebrating the lives, work and legacy of many artists who are no longer with us. These are the East Bay’s Psychick Warriors: Barrett Clark (R.M.S., Polar, RPTN, Katabatik), Joey Casio, Micah Danemayer (Paralycyst, Discarded) and beautifully enigmatic Cash Askew (Them Are Us Too, Crecendo).

This broadcast also features unreleased tracks and live performances from the many projects that these artists were a part of. Accenting Shadows, Polar, Opulence, Obsidian Blade, Red Cellar, Paralycyst, Crecendo, Prist and Heavenly. Starting with the latest release from San Francisco's own Left Hand Path Label, Infinite Beat contributor C.L.A.W.S. unveils his latest offering with Stygian Morass, a four-track EP with hallucinogenic, feverish tracks that evokes Nastassja Kinski in Cat People or an erotic giallo. It is both both horrifying and titillating. Highly recommended. 

This broadcast also features a lovable chat with a beloved producer and DJ based in San Francisco, Sepehr. He has affiliates with Outpost, a respected underground party from CM-4, Michael Claus and Nackt that recently launched a label). Sepehr has also DJ'ed all over the Bay Area with his electric sets.

Out on French label Shelter Press, all of her experimentations in modular synthesis were recorded during a snow storm at her home in Brittany. It explores "a moment of common thinking and listening in its diversity and abstraction. In the same way a sci-fi novel by Philip K. Dick or a sculpture by Guy Mees can be percieved: trivial, sensitive and mysterious at the same time." Highly recommended.

Broadcast 69 of Infinite Beat celebrates the new Felte Records release of The Mirage, a stunning new LP by Chasms. Chasms is a duo formed by Jess Labrador and Sky Madden which merges the ethereal with deep, dub-ladden basslines.

Their sophomore release was created "following major upheaval in the pair’s lives, including the loss of Madden's brother and a number of the band's friends in Oakland’s Ghost Ship warehouse fire in 2016. Compounded with the dissolution of a marriage, and leaving San Francisco after more than a decade to relocate to Los Angeles, the album is an exploration of grief and the multi-faceted heartbreak that follows such events. What we think we see, what we think we know to be true, how we think life will turn out, the plans we make – all reduced to an illusion when someone you expected to be alive tomorrow is gone, when plans fail, when the mask is removed, and you are left simply to be."

Infinite Beat has moved to @sutrofm! Broadcast 76 features the last DJ set that I performed live at Ambient Awakening’s church February 22, 2020. This mix was a sonic interpretation of Pina Bausch’s work in the tanztheater through atonal soundscapes, black metal drones, sluggish rhythms and INTENSITY. Much of her work explored the raw emotion of relationships; from tenderness, alienation, deep intimacy and even violent bursts of anguish. Her work is unapologetic and beautiful. Graceful and ugly. It would have been a joy to see her interpret such sounds herself. Enjoy.

KTV is an AV mix series with the intention of facilitating collaborations between music selectors and visual artists to introduce a unique and immersive experience into viewers’ homes. At a time when club spaces and dance floors feel like intangible artifacts from a past life, KTV gives viewers a glimpse into a world where music and visual art come together with the purpose of not only entertaining, but also raising funds for causes that are locally influencing positive change.

A poet must stir the soul

Topazu is a San Francisco-based selector. She hosted the local Infinite Beat Ambient showcase and radio show, Infinite Beat, formerly on Radio Valencia and SutroFM.

Since 2015, the show featured producers, artists and DJs that are shaping the Bay Area sound in experimental synthesis as well as celebrated romanticism, nostalgia and cinematic themes with modern day electronics.

Besides curating Infinite Beat, she has been featured DJing many local shows including; Sure Thing, Surface Tension, Honey Soundsystem and Recombinant Media Labs. With her interests in abstract textures, carnal rhythms and her exuberance in darker, chaotic noise, Topazu has also supported many international artists such as Wolfgang Voigt, Evigt Morker, Silent Servant, HTRK and Marie Davidson.

She was a featured performer for the first San Francisco edition of Mutek in 2018.
