Program Note

“…wash yourself of yourself” incorporates two electronics techniques that I developed from 2008 to 2010 and refined in 2014 and 2015.  One technique uses real-time spectral analysis to create timbres by both subtractive and additive synthesis.  These timbres imitate the original sounds as well as the combination tones our brains create when hearing these sounds.  The other technique uses real-time spectral analyses to create statistically transforming clouds of microtonal samples.  In the case of my recent piano works, the samples used to create these clouds are also piano sounds.  Both of these techniques aim to provide the listener with methods to explore his or her own listening.

 “…wash yourself of yourself” presents these techniques in an open and structured improvisational manner.  The title come from the line in a poem by Rumi, “Be melting snow, wash yourself of yourself.” Following this line, the work reflects an attempt to totally formalize and remove any unintentional mannerisms from my music.

The work is written for and dedicated to my lovely wife, the Taiwanese composer and pianist Chen-Hui Jen.

What does the banjo music of the fabled criminal sound like?


I went searching for banjo music. I wanted to avoid stereotypical bluegrass banjo sounds and found samattacott's amazing track "tuningABanjo" on Freesound. Thirty minutes of vague, random banjo sounds. 

I selected a few segments and processed them through Borderlands. Added some Alcatraz prison ambience at the opening. 85 was Capone's number at Alcatraz.

85: Echoes Of Alcatraz [disquiet0255]

Piece for bass flute and electronics which relates it's title to a '90 song by Nirvana "Come as you are". This piece researches the human brain's functions such as remembering, learning, perception, subconsciousness, etc. via several mood miniatures. This piece was commission by Rarescales. In this audio you can listen to parts performed by different flutists (Shao-Wei Chou, Dani Bošnjak and Carla Rees).

Good Old Caltrain

I have long been interested in sleep, the unconscious and the subconscious when it comes to audio, listening and music.  With the birth of my first daughter I became particularly interested in sleep and how to get more of it (I’m sure most parents go through this).  I composed several pieces of simple drone music as an aid to our family to try to help us relax and sleep.  I have no idea if it really worked.  Jimmy’s piece and write up led me back to some of these thoughts about sleep and particularly what role audio plays during sleep, getting us to sleep, meditation, relaxation, dreaming, etc.

Jimmy makes some comments in his write up about sounds detached from the listener.  While Jimmy sleeps he images the sounds being heard by the objects that make them.  This is a beautiful idea in and of itself but what strikes me as interesting is that Jimmy still includes himself in his sonic portrait; a body, lying still and unconscious, perhaps not listening to these sounds but somehow still connected to them.

What role does audio play in aiding sleep?  What role does audio play while we are asleep? These are both interesting questions to me and are central to my relay piece and inspired by Jimmy’s piece and thoughts.


I’ve sampled small portions of Jimmy’s piece and reconstructed them into very simple layered patterns that loop and oscillate.  For me they are the sounds of the process of sleep itself. They are the sounds of a sort of sleep machine, an audio bridge between the conscious and unconscious.

The Field Recording Show #7 - Listening - Sunday the 12th of January 2020

Sounds of a train releasing pressurized air (or something like that). It was a locomotive parked a few tracks away from the passenger platform. Another train comes and goes at the beginning of the recording. My train arrives at the end of the recording.
