One half of Scottish duo Clouds, Perth Drug Legend tear off a solo EP of rugged, apocalyptic bloke-techno.

What more can be said about Clouds, young prodigies who have put out as much innovative techno in the past few years than anyone. The story takes a twist with a wealth of material being released by PDL, hot off a remix of Tiga’s Bugatti and releases on Resin and Westend Communications. The sound is reminiscent of Ghost Systems Rave, but there’s the feeling that things have gotten even more refined, something that smacks of a real subcultural movement.

Opener Balquhidder Ruins is a stomping gate-crasher, the tempo pulled back just enough to feel the grit of industrial funk, everything restrained to it’s bare essentials.

The third release of the vinyl only label Another Earth is upon us and it's all about techno. Esther Duijn combines 2 acts together in a Split EP series which compliment each others sound. For this release Esther selected two notorious European techno producers she adores, Opuswerk and Lee Holman. On the A side Opuswerk delivers 2 deep driving techno tracks. RF Thruster basically expands from beginning to end. This constant propulsion has a deep impact on any dance floor. He drew inspiration from Jeff Mills and Planetary Assault Systems for this particular track. EmDrive starts with an atmospheric intro and morphs into one epic build up that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. On the flip side Lee Holman bangs 2 deep and firm techno grooves like there is no tomorrow. While Adaptive Optics is rough on the edges it does pay attention to small details which make the track very dynamic. Absorption Lines puts the emphasis on a warmer atmosphere. Another week brings with it another top techno release from !Organism. It is TKNO behind this latest one, with Subjected Skill offering a great remix.

TKNO has now been doing this for ten years. He has been involved in a number of different collaborative outfits, has played at Exit Festival and releases on big labels from Toolroom to Stereo, as well as this one. He also runs his own label and once again here fuses slick drum programming with gritty synth work.
Up first is the toughened techno cut 'Inferno'. Stiff drums force you to move your body as rasping, grinding synths bring texture and energy to the groove. As it unfolds the lines grow more unhinged and the whole thing is filled with a dark atmosphere.

Remixing it is Subjected Skill, who stands for distinctly deep and characterful techno. He makes music for the shadows and here goes for the jugular with a high tempo and sci-fi remix riddled with brain frying synths and scurrying synths. 

It is a paranoid cut for the most intense dancefloors.TKNO's other original 'Dream Confusion' is truly beautiful and blissful, with punchy drum patterns and bright synths bringing a soothing, spaced out and cosmic vibe. It is a heady and heartfelt track that is tender as well as being direct for the dancefloor.

Once again expanding their horizons with each new EP, !Organism's latest hook up with TKNO shows the artist is in fine form with his latest and greatest offering.

Will & Ink’s latest is a remix EP that finds Bambounou and Simo Cell team up for four reworked versions of Yaleesa Halls Woodall LP. Bambounou is a Paris-based hybrid techno and house producer who has long been close to the 50 Weapons label, and Simo Cell is an experimental artist whose music finds a home on labels like Livity Sound and Wisdom Teeth. 

Up first, Bambounou goes in and turns ‘Woodall 0217’ into a menacing, stripped back track with a soft flurry of toms and freaky sine waves all underpinned by lurching, subliminal bass. Simo Cell then steps up for a version of '0224' that is much more dubbed out and for the club. It breezes along on a swaying groove with hi fidelity sound designs colouring the airwaves as the drums scurry down low. Then the pair link up for their Trance-Attitude-Mix of 'Woodall 0406'. Again the drums are weightless down below as they turn in big, sweeping loops and the slivers of silvery synth really electrify the whole thing as they flash about like fireflies. Finally, they remix the same track again but remove the drums, instead making it a paranoid and dark, spares and suggestive minimal number that is wholly from the future. These two have a very specific sound and one that sounds like little else, a solid match with Yaleesa Hall and the Will & Ink imprint, as this EP proves.

Over the last 10 years Token Records has grown steadily, both in size and stylistic breadth. The aptly-titled Momentum comes as a celebration of the close-knit family of artists amassed throughout the label’s running. The record is a fitting collaborative project, with every track on the album produced by two longstanding and well-respected artists from the label’s roster and especially commissioned for the release. This type of collaboration is intended to showcase the specific sound of the label, developed through 10 years of careful curation, as well as bringing out the individual identities of the artists involved.
 
On the development of the label’s sound, Token founder Kr!z comments, “Inigo delivered quite the statement with the first release Identify Yourself. I think identity was and still is key in the development of the label and the artists.”
 
Inigo Kennedy’s involvement in Token has been profoundly influential and spans its very existence; with three collaborative tracks on the record, it’s easy to hear his trademark cinematic sound throughout. One such offering, Amalgam, is co-produced by Kr!z himself, which is a first step for the label head into releasing his own music after years of taking the back seat, focusing instead on DJing while keeping the label ticking over and the releases coming out.
 
Token’s identity has been clarified through its curation over the years as each new artist has joined the label family. Ø [Phase] has been a staple since 2007, providing cerebral sustenance for the most discerning of listeners. To date, he has produced two successful albums and a string of notable EPs for Token, Binary Opposition being perhaps the best-known; a pulsating, mesmerising project on both sides that played a serious role in pushing the label to a larger audience. Rødhåd’s trademark composure was a similarly early addition, and although his Spomeniks release was a step aside from his own ongoing Dystopian project, he has remained an important member of the Token collective. 
 
Ctrls was a Token affiliate from early in his career, and has to date provided nine solo EPs. His class of jarring, inorganic techno adds an atypical feel to the label’s output, while Antigone’s 2015 double EP Cantor Dust paved the way for another strong artist/label relationship. This bond has resulted series of adventurous releases over past two years, with the most recent Ostinato EP esteemed as a tasteful antidote to the techno status quo. 
 
There are some artists who, although better known for long releasing careers with other respected outlets, have become important in bolstering the label’s character in particular. Oscar Mulero’s reputation as an institution of electronic music precedes him, and Tadeo has been releasing his Detroit-leaning and avant-garde sounds since 2004. Sigha’s involvement with Token came after a varied discography, his Metabolism album from this year marking an integral progression in the label’s direction, providing a firm expression of complex musicality and contemplative form.

The Tel-Aviv centered Yotam Avni officially joined forces with Stroboscopic Artefacts last year, turning in a sensual an invigorating entry for the Monad series. Thanks to his personalized fusion of esoteric and worldly sound elements, Avni immediately made a case to deliver more work to the label, and now he has done so with “Perlude to Dybbuk,” the second in a new series of S.A. releases to feature the Oblique Artefacts visual team’s distinct, elegant portrayals of scanned foliage.

As with Avni’s previous Monad contribution, the new Perlude to Dybbuk makes references – both in title and in sonic content – to the ancient Hebrew folklore of his homeland (a “dybbuk” being a kind of limbonic spirit attaching itself to the body of a living human until it has successfully reached its final destination). However, the atmospheric, rather than overt, use of these references gives this record a level of dignity and quality as well as a premonitory feeling that hovers over the proceedings.

The opening “Avka (New Life)” opens with the twin stimuli of chthonic, rolling percussion and ambience that has become a modern Stroboscopic tradition, but ever so gradually deviates from the realm of the easily anticipated. Some of the surprises to be found here are sharp, organic drum fills and sighing strings that have an uncanny vocal quality to them. By the time a surgically clipped acid synth sample comes into the mix, the track has reached a simmering level of excitement and the listener’s imagination will have license to reside in a virtual world seamlessly combining elements both ancient and futuristic.

“Dybbuk” temporarily situates listeners back in brutal modernity, with the first sounds heard being something like insistently slicing helicopter blades. Avni merely uses this as the foundation, though, for a genuinely unique construction whose shamanic beats, throttled horn and undertow of frenzied electronics combine to give the feeling of being menaced and eventually overtaken by a spirit entity. This piece shows just what Avni is capable when operating in a more aggressive, ‘post-industrial’ mode, and the result stands up with some of the best exponents of that genre.

The finale “Modern Matters” is the most readily club-friendly selection from the disc. This potent, floor-shaking and perspiration-inducing number superimposes resonant vocals from traditional Middle Eastern folk song onto this alchemical mixture of machine oil and sweat, and provides a romantic flair without resorting to naïve, touristic “ethno-techno.” Avni’s skillful dedication to counterpoint, and determination to make a finished form is more than the sum of its parts, shines through here and throughout the duration of this record.
