Step 2: Think of a sort of music that younger you enjoyed that you no longer are as fond of.

Step 3: Compose a piece of music that bridges the gap or otherwise finds common ground between the two types of music from Step 1 and Step 2.

Instrumental cue, hybrid jazz-rock

Recorded February 2023, mixed Friday 10th march 2023.


Live studio  improvisation with Miguel Yanover on sax (@yanomito), I played a nylon-string electric bass.
We jammed over a pre recorded (by me) drum track and later I overdubbed a Hammond Organ trying to save this one from the trash lid.

Still, even if I love the live sax and bass interplay, this is a great candidate to be a  "forever unused" track. So I'm glad to mix it this morning and share it here.

Deromanticizing (disquiet0584)

Like most lads growing up in the late 70’s the guitar was the king of instruments and like most of my peers I worshiped at the various alters of the guitar gods. Here, subtlety was not a requirement and the louder and the more over produced the better. 

But then I graduated, went to university, read Deleuze and soon was grooving to the likes of Nurse With Wound, Throbbing Gristle, Brian Eno and Einsturzende Neubauten. I made music on tape machines, combed back alleys for old duct work to bring to my dorm room so that I could hook them up to contact mics and generally found pleasure in the obscure and at times unlistenable. 

Hence my homage and mangling of Boston’s “More than a Feeling,” which I would not listen to now. Although I would listen to listen to a cover of it by Genesis P-Orridge.

A note on method:

I sampled various bits of the song on a Music1010 BitBox, then sent various excerpts into Meng Qi’s Winger Pinger and recorded that. Then I randomly selected parts of that recording and sampled them with a Polyend Tracker, used the random fill and note section to jumble the samples and then played the whole thing through the Zoia to further chop and process it and recorded it once more. 

And true to the era, instead of just one song, I have created a concept album. So there are nine songs, all around 30 seconds long. Each one is less or more than a feeling I once had.

I have my field recording of the sea so I had a starting point; everything else was made with VCV Rack. I started with the sequences then added the synthetic waves, mixed with the real ones towards the end of the track. Wanting to keep the rest quite sparce and minimal I then made a simple chord sequence and a simple self generating melody.   

With a rough plan for the overall form I was going to follow I set up physical controls and multi track recording, hit record and mixed/modulated all the elements in one live take.

The story of the Replicant God is a cautionary one. A powerful entity whose name isn't remembered anymore, jealous of the creative power of the Gods, built a mighty loom, an instrument capable of weaving whole worlds and dimensions. Despite numerous warnings from the Gods themselves, they worked tirelessly, with limitless enthusiasm and a genuine wish to express their innermost self through creation. Blinded by said enthusiasm they were fully unaware of the falsehood of their work and the damage done by it: instead of wondrous universes and dimensions they were weaving a veil, covering our whole world, acting as a barrier between us and our heavenly home, the true stars.
Due to one powerful entity's misguided and misplaced goodwill and desire, our whole species live their lives blinded by the false miracles of the Veil and the darkness that is the fruit of the Loom of the Replicant God.
A tale of not accepting our Gods-given roles and the ruin it might bring upon us and others, it is a cautionary one indeed.

The Loom of the Replicant God

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
