Exclusive: Superpitcher - Lush Life feat. Fantastic Twins

He’s back. He’s back with some lush music. He’s back with his Lush Life single. Aksel Schaufler alias Superpitcher, a Kompakt mainstay, the co-label head of Hippie Dance, one part of the Pachanga Boys and known as the ambassador of the golden rave days, debuts on the Live At Robert Johnson label with a two tracker as golden as the twelve ravey chapters he’s put out on his own label. Lush Life, the EP’s eponymous track, features French-Berliner Fantastic Twins’ for the vocals, and comes in as Superpitcher-esque on the one hand and quite different on the other. The almost ten minute lasting track is probably a typical Superpitcher feature, what is new though, is the selection of sounds and the result in general. Aksel created an utterly atmospheric take, which flows by as fast as the rave-days, and takes its listeners back to the days when Francois K delivered dubby House music takes per excellence, just like Superpitcher does now himself. Peaceful almost spiritual and endearing are traits that describe the emotional components the track evokes in its listeners with a Julienne Dessagne, Fantastic Twins real name, delivering those charming vocals that hunt you through the night and over the floors.

Superpitcher's single Lush Life will be released on Live At Robert Johnson on February 18th, 2022.

Exclusive: Damiano von Erckert - Retrogott - Like This (Damiano von Erckert Remix)

Spreading some urban melancholy with this ten tracker, it's Damiano von Erckert making his return to Will Saul's Aus Music label with his  album The Past The Future. After two EPs on the label in the past, namely PETE and Replica Material, and a remix for Cinthie, DvE takes things a bit further with his third long player. By latter it is meant that The Past The Future can be divided into different sound-categories, which take the listeners from club to space and back to Detroit. Retrogott - Like This (Damiano von Erckert Remix) surely aims at the floors, but has enough deepness, funk and groove to round out Damiano's conglomerate of sounds, which showcase the artist's studio skills. Everything else is for the listener to decide, however to not get involved with DvE latest work is nearly impossible since The Past The Future perfectly does what the title suggests: it brings together DvE's spaced-out sounds with electronic music's past without being out of touch with the real (club) world.

Residing in Madrid it is Polish House ambassador Voitek Taranczuk delivering the seventh outing (and second edit edition) of his label, which he started back in 2022 under his solo artist moniker Ketiov. Voitek, who many know due to his participation as infamous House-duo Catz 'n Dogz (formerly 3 Channels), has treasured his solo-project and aside from his own edit series also released a solo EP on Gerd Janson's Running Back label. After a hiatus he now puts out new (housey) material on the label, namely four edits that cover the pureness of electronic music's main-genres: House and Disco. The A1, Gorgeous, is the sweet (door) opener of the EP but also provides listeners to dive deeper into the New York-influenced House-sound with a slightly percussive bassline as well as deep chords and vocal-samples. Rich in sounds and harmonious in its composition Ketiov delivers and absolutely classy tune made for intimate club moments.

Alexander Dorn, better known as Credit 00, returns to Uncanny Valley to release his No More Sad Trance EP, a four tracker highlighting the artist’s musical extravaganza as well as love of experimentation when it comes to own productions and therefore consists out of a conglomerate of sounds and influences reaching from Jungle, Garage over to Trance and 90s Pop and more. Save The Forest!, the last track on the EP, shows signs of Trance-typical sounds with slight 90s nuances put over a lush bass line. Wobbling chords, slight Acid bleeps and short Break-esque round off the track making one musically dive into the rain forest as the before mentioned sounds create not only the atmosphere of it but also deliver an approach for a visualization of the scenery.

Lyon House-ambassador and person-in-charge for heady House music with a positive note Simon Blondeau, who most of us know as under his artist moniker Crowd Control, has made a superb performance since launching his label Happiness Therapy in 2018, of course starting its cheerful triumph with a split EP from the man himself. Ever since the label as well as Crowd Control himself have built up an impressing release catalogue with music from aspiring or established artists from the House music scene not only delivering the before-mentioned music with a therapeutical effect but refreshing vibes in a classy guise. As much as the label has grown and become a scene's go-to for quality House music Crowd Control too has found his way of releasing music, running the label, being involved in an artist booking agency and having own events. Shortly before 2022 came to an end Simon dropped his altogether 3rd outing on Happiness Therapy, Pianorama, possibly one of the tracks for the 2023 festival season, maybe one for forever. Whatever it may be and when is not in the artist's hands but he's surely balanced enough to deal with it.

Exclusive: Soul Clap - Sueño Hebreo (Lauer Remix)

The latest release on French label Skylax Records is nothing but the summer House anthem for 2023 coming from the Bostonians of Soul Clap, who deliver the feel good track Sueño Hebreo including a remix from Lauer. The latter comes up with an approach, which takes listeners and dancers equally on a journey to the golden Italo-House era. The piano-synth-line and the straight House bassline basically scream for a revival in the present of these times and, fair enough to say, do not sound outdated or old but are more a reference to Lauer's ability of creating a timeless take with the potential of turning floors upside down or simply evoking those feel good vibes on it.

Nuances De Nuit co-founder T. Jacques is back with a five-tracker or as the artist himself says "a hot minute since I released a full record". The Londoner releases those hot productions on Truly Madly's MINDHELMET label and marks the only third full EP by one artist on the label - after catalogue numbers three and six - and his first EP after Hobbit Housers on his own label back in 2021. And it seems as if the wait was worth it, T. Jacques delivers five cuts in his inevitable minimalistic yet deep style, a mixture of joy and reluctance or the endeavor of turning the dancefloor nuts by implementing those deeply touching synth-chord lines in the dancers' heads - pronto! The latter does not only express the pace of T. Jacques mission but is also the A1 on the EP - a constant groover gaining its power not only from it's lush bass line but, as before mentioned, from the "mental" chords, which sound like the water drops pouring down from a stalagmite in a limestone cave and therefore create a unique vibe all through the track.

Portugal-based producer Velvet Velour has quite an impressive musical output on labels such as Butter Side Up, Nuances de Nuit, Welt Discos or Small Hours. Now the artist contributes a six-tracker to Truly Madly's renowned imprint MINDHELMET, a mixture  of House with a deeper and minimalistic twist, nuances of Breaks and UKG and heavy basslines. As on previous outings Velvet Velour brilliantly masters the balance of creating basslines with catchy synth-sound sequences as he implements the latter perfectly clocked in his tracks, so that the tracks' frame smoothly goes over into something special. The before mentioned can strongly be witnessed on the B2, called Wave Wizard as Wave Wizard rightly stands for the moments the Wizard, Velvet Velour, creates when letting the chords flow over that carrying bassline.

Exclusive Armen Miran 'For Eternity (Love Over Entropy Remix)'

Armen Miran's sound heads from LA to Europe and conquers the scene in no time. 'For Eternity' is Miran's latest installment and provides everything for a pure listening experience. The EP kicks off with the original version of 'For Eternity' that easily crosses the boundaries between folk elements and House music in combination with an almost sacred choir sample. French producers Birds of Mind contribute a remix that emphasizes on the downtempo aspect and turns the original into an almost chopped version that highlights the folk and choir elements. A last remix comes from Dutch producer of the moment Love Over Entropy who concentrates on the crunchiness of the baseline but uses warmer synthchords that perfectly harmonize with the guitar from the original while also adding some spooky minimalistic sound samples. The EP's second track 'Save My Soul' is an upcoming storm of an folk influenced tune not restraining an oriental flute and oud. Unders' Britta Arnold's and Budakid's remix not only adds some pace to the original but also hope in form of pending synths and reduced folk elements mainly focussing on the oud from the original that drills into one's head.

Chapter 24's latest EP comes from Newcastle producer and DJ Jobe, who has released on labels such as Connaisseur, Steyoyoke, Akbal and, of course, London based label Chapter 24. In the history of latter JOBE is responsible for one of the most favorited and successful tracks, Aurora, so undoubtedly the label bosses Marcus and Sam welcome JOBE back with open arms and most important with a sophisticated and tribal-influenced 4 tracker called 'Changes' - probably re-writing the label's formula of success. The EP's opening track 'Rafari' is arranged around an African vocal but leaves the 'world music path' with the sound design of the track's instrumental approach. JOBE focuses on a  lead-synth that accepted the challenge of bringing two different musical approaches together and leads the track skillfully into a more techno direction.

Exclusive Nyaruach 'Gatluak (Nandu Remix)'

Danish producer Rasmus Vincentz Jensen better known under his alias Nandu kicks off 2019 with a remix for Nyarach's track 'Gatluak' which underlines his preference for African vocals. Despite running at a speed of 114 bpm only the Copenhagener created a remix that easily fits into any peak time set as the sound-arrangement and the rhytmically yet stomping bass line seem to manage the balancing act of working at any time of the night. 'Gatluak' lives musically up on Nandu's last productions of 2018 when the Dane released his 'One Man's High Is Another Man's Anxiety' long player on Connected and skillfully tossed around with various elements that he put together to little masterpieces. For his remix approach to 'Gatluak' Nandu chose to create a symbiosis between implementing the original vocal sample and the right dose of percussions in combination with the carrying synth-melody. The way Nandu puts each piece of the puzzle together makes the final result sound like a march of liberation on the dance floor that not only dancers seem to join but has already gained heavy support from scene's key-players like Dixon.

Serbian producer Coeus actived his memory of a 'Forgotten Love' for the first release of shortly founded Parisian label Mimesis. The three tracker, consisting of the EP's name giving track 'Forgotten Love', 'Atlantis' and 'Gravity', depicts hidden feelings in space at a musical level. 'Forgotten Love' overwhelms its listeners with a dark fundamental tone that's not taking the track's lead but is certainly responsible for the undertone. The latter is worked out by the synth-chords that deliver a memorable melody that can easily be recalled as its saved within short time in the back of our heads, in our memory, so it is not forgotten but present.

From the southern tip of Italy Mauro di Martino, better known under his Musumeci moniker, delivers one of the tracks of the summer 2019. His 'supernatural' remix for African musicians Emmanuel Jal and Nyaruach's track 'Ti Chuong' on MoBlack Records brims with energy and in addition to it creates a new electronic music sub-genre, 'New Afro Disco'. By far Mauro's remix approach touches various styles – the key elements can be broken down to a funky bass line topped off with disco-chords that highlight the African vocals from Emmanuel Jal and Nyaruach. So far the wrap-up. But what's not included in the latter is the way Musumeci puts these elements together, namely gently as if the single soundscapes stroke to then are closely linked to each other and generate a harmonny that forms the most versatile track. 'Many Faces' is a symbiosis of smoothly combined electronic soundscapes with traditional African vocals and instruments. The Geneva based artist once again easily masters the difficulties, namely those of finding the right balances between the right dose of chants and a groovy and driving instrumental. Exclusive Benjamin Fröhlich ft. Dreamcast 'Last Night (Marcus Worgull Remix)'

Nine and a half months ago Permanent Vacation co-label founder Benjamin Fröhlich released his nine tracker Amiata, music to ease your mind or to drift away on the dance floor and around. The first set of remixes for Fröhlich's album was due in summer of 2019 and featured new approaches from the likes of Massimiliano Pagliara, Panthera Krause, Cornelius Doctor, Jex Opolis and Rhode & Brown and delivered solid material for as many occasions as the original takes did. Now Pemanent Vacation respectively Benjamin Fröhlich rings in the second round of remixes for Amiata having some of the most in-demand artists of the electronic music scene on board to give his tunes a second glance, even though it's not needed at a quality level. However, Fröhlich gathered artists like Fort Romeau, Chloé, Yør Kultura, Tom Bioly alias TB and Marcus Worgull together. The latter took on remix duties for Last Night feat. vocals from Dreamcast and turns the smooth and dreamy orginal into a more forwardly going track still capturing these sentimental moments Dreamcast and Benjamin created by generating a felicitos symbiosis between vocals and chords as well pads. Marcus simply added slightly more drive to the track by focusing on a more lush bass line and implementing different yet appealing chords that go into a strongly influenced melo-direction, or in other words it adds authentic the Worgull-vibe to it.

Every release is a statement of what he's capable to produce and it seems as if Geneva-resident Laolu is one of the rare artists putting quality over quantity as the few and well-chosen EPs or remixes represent as well as prove his maturity at an artistic level. Laolu's latest coup is his Force EP on Munich based label Compost, which holds the long anticipated remix from Laolu for Swiss vocalist Sophie Hunger's track There Is Still Pain Left as a vinyl exclusive and two original tracks, Force and Swango. The latter's simply showing the artist's class when it comes to sophisticated productions. Swango is build up and built around layer after layer, it's initially introduced percussive driven bass line sets the vibe for the subsequently added first array of chords which are followed by a second sound sequence in a different octave but the same pitch and create a multi-layered harmonic composition. However, stylistically Laolu remains true to himself as Swango contains elements from his eclectic musical background, which are majestically put together to obtain a complex organic track.

Exclusive Cowboy Rhythmbox - 6AM Cowboy (Cowboy Rhythmbox Deviation Variation)

British “outsider-electronic duo“ Cowboy Rhythmbox return to Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound with a  none-existing musical approach up to date from the cowboys Nathan Gregory Wilkins and Richard X themselves. As Detroit producer Sharif Laffrey took on remix duties for CR's 6AM Nathan and Richard remixed the remix of the track, expressing their appreciation of Sharif's work. The result of the remix remix, simply called Deviation Variation, falls into the category creative remarkableness. A lush yet bouncey bass line is equipped with sharp reverbing chords and blurry synths while partly implemented filter hi-hat rides and mono-alternating vocal-snippets are swaying from left to right. The remix reaches musical exellence once the disorted and echoing chord sequence makes its appearance adding a warm vitalness to the wild west Detroit-shooting.

Cowboy Rhythmbox's EP 6AM Cowboy is released on Phantasy Sound on April 10th, 2020.

Exclusive Time To Sleep - Lungo Mare

Named after one of Croatia's most beautiful coastal prominades Pula-based artist Time To Sleep makes his Disco Halal Singles Club debut with Lungo Mare. The take captures some of the artist's musical influences and comes with a rather funky almost rock-ish bass line, which is enriched with a bleeping lead synth that in the course of the track is groomed with a glitch adding even more raw- and edginess to it. It's those little details that Time To Sleep prepared Lungo Mare with that keeps the listener hooked to the track and making it sound intriguing. But in all the aforementioned roughness Time To Sleep's approach has beauty shining through and possibly describing the twelve kilometer lasting path Lungo Mare, when having overcome as well as to take on some burden before rewarded with beautiful sundowners and views over Adriatic Sea.

Time To Sleep's single Lungo Mare will be released on Disco Halal Singles Club on May 1st, 2020.

After his Fragile EP on Correspondant earlier this year Tel Aviv-based artist Omri Smadar is back with a five tracker on Blue Shadow. With En Safak the artist dives deep into his upbringing, explores and re-experiences that time (again) as he delivers those for him typically psychadelic dancefloor takes with reference to artists and music from his childhood days. Dub Shell Dmaot goes back to Tractor's Revenge's track Game Of Tears, which was first released back in 1990. The Dub Shell approach though omits the vocals though and fnearly ocuses on the dark and disco-ish vibe  only turning the track into a truly club-esque experience as the listener is picked up by those echoing robotic vocal snippets creating a surreal world in one's mind, you can only endure when feeling the sweat dripping from the ceiling in an underground club.

Omri Smadar's EP En Safak will be released on Blue Shadow on July 17th, 2020.

Zurich-based artist Soma Soul makes his debut on Endless with a musical package consisting out of five tracks, each touching the bottom of everyone's heart and soul and each with a different approach to one's sorrows. Besides the two original tracks, Hurt and Missing – which were pre-released -  Hurt comes with two remix versions from Endless head-honcho Luca Bacchetti while Innervisions mainstay and Chorus label-head Marcus Worgull gives Missing his retouch. With bird's twittering and the intagrated piano (chords) Worgull makes his approach sound like an exotic extravaganza as he creates a picture of a piano being played in the sand dunes at the beach while birds are sweetly singing along and support the melody as well as the vocal in a comfortable manner.

Berlin-East Frisian Heindenreich, also known as one half of Leggings, a slow Indie-Dance formation with his partner in crime DJ Cremant, challenges Francophile vocalist ANGST vor GRETA for his Je Palpite EP on Dutch label Sinchi Collective. Beside the original version of Je Palpite, the track comes with remixes from Calypso head honcho Thomas Jackson and Robert Johnson mainstay Chinaski, who finally delivers new material after his collaboration with Curses on Dischi Autunno earlier this year. As expected and as fresh as a tropical fruit Chinaski squeezes the Disco-ish note out of Heidenreich's original and exchanges it with more progressive and heavily hitting electroid essences that turn his version of Je Palpite to a kiwano, an exotic warm composition with an edgy and raw musical backbone.

Exclusive: Andras - Scallops

Australian electronic music wizard Andrew Wilson alias Andras returns to Public Possession with a two tracker, Scopes/ Scallops, that's meant to cause some waves amongst House heads and lovers of the art. Having released on labels such as Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space or Dopeness Galore, Wilson now comes back to the Munich-based label collective, after making debuting on Public Possession with his Boom Boom EP in 2019. The B-side, Scallops, contains everything a proper (House) club tune needs in order to make masses move. Melodically catchy chords underline the artist's skills to create an almost summer-ish approach to the genre that's accompanied by a lush bass line and sharp hi-hats as well as an easiness despite its general ground speed. The 90's influence of the dreamy (chord) hook line is inevitable, however Andras manages to revisit it in a neat manner to make it sound like the start of a new golden era of the music.

Andras' single Scopes / Scallops will be released on Public Possession on March 5th, 2021.

Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
