With far too many chin strokers and music elitists around, we need people like Kristy Harper who choose to bring a sense of fun and sparkle to their musical pursuits instead. 

An advocate for female empowerment and body positivity, she translates these messages into both her productions and DJ sets. So far her releases have come via Let’s Play House and Monologues Records, followed by her acclaimed ‘My Body, My Future’ track, which samples Samirah Raheem’s viral interview at the LA ‘Slut Walk’. 

As a DJ, both behind the decks or on the Netil Radio airwaves where she holds a residency, she’s guided by a pure and unadulterated love of disco, Italo and classic house; sonics that filter into much of her musical output.

That goes for today’s mix too, which revs through a cocktail of synth-driven rhythms and bright acid-laced cuts, and follows Kristy’s fuego remix for our latest R$N Records release from Bawrut and Chico Blanco, which you should listen to stat!

Surfing on the House Music wave it's Australian artist Merve who delivers the goodies and insights around her artistical persona. The Melbourne based DJ, currently experiencing something that has almost been forgotten in many places, namely playing gigs in front of a real crowd, has been around for a moment in her home country, playing with scene mainstays and renowned artists alike and sharing her vision and approach of genre to a wider audience. During the lockdown she (re)discovered her preference for the radio amongst other things. Additionally Merve speaks to Torture the Artist about the Aussie club (culture), her first steps in and into the scene, the few positive sides of the pandemic and its impact on the local nightlife and lastly delivers the latest episode of the art:cast special series.

Running one renowned record label is quite an achievement, being involved in two is something extraordinary. Timo Rotonen better known as Timo Deeprhythms or just as Deeprhythms, which is also a music platform the Helsinki citizen established in 2001, is the founder of Echocentric Records and co-founder of Coymix Ltd or two imprints that shape House Music's underground and warrant that the scene around the music evolves. However, Timo has not only implemented two prominent labels but made a name himself as eminent DJ and curator of the arts, which he not only shares with his selection for radio shows or gigs but also at Bandcamp – supporting the artists at the same time (https://bandcamp.com/deeprhythms/). The Finn's approach to music is rather eclectic, a freedom that often comes with experience and age, still it shall not or is not to be mistaken by triviality because Timo's music nor his mixes are the opposite, hence he mixes himself through various genres and subgenres of the electronic music scene, yet all his selected tracks follow one flow and/or cover the deep- and dreaminess the artist enjoys and which represent his trademark sound. For Torture the Artist Timo has curated and mixed a 1 hour and 13 minute lasting piece that portrays the beforementioned musically and makes one escape and forget current outer influences. It's just music. It's deeprhythm.

Melbourne based DJ and curator Merve lays down a dark n’ stormy club mix with heavy doses of 90s rave and propulsive rhythms. We recently had the pleasure of hearing her perform at the re-opening of Amsterdam-based club De School, which completely blew us away. Fashion-icon? Music-nerd? Both! Matisa has always combined her passion for fashion with that of music leading into releases on Optimo and Biologic, which was not only accompanied by bright poetic music but tees that shone equally pale. Inspired by and from her early childhood, which dates back to the 90s, the artist has a preference to draw on sounds and (musical) influences from that period of her life and turn it into contemporary pieces. Without a doubt Matisa has fully dedicated herself to these artistic fields, starting her days with music as well as probably ending them in the same way. For Torture the Artist she reveals some of her habits and her ‘golden dream’ of a future, she compiled the latest and last art:cast of a bizarre year and spoils us with some vinyl-tips.

Hailing from New Zealand, Eden Burns is one of the artists who has steadily gained more and more recognition within the electronic music scene – quite rightly. With releases on Optimo and Public Possession the blithe spirit made artists notice the quality of his inimitable groovey music, which seems to be a positive highlight in these times. Most mentionable are his recent  EP Big Beat Manifesto Vol. II, which includes Invercargirl and 22 Dance Demo, and his remix for Berlin-based Aussie Bell Towers' track Maybe We Can Work It Out. It's this easiness and simplicity in his music - not to mix up with triviality – combined with intriguing chords and lush bass lines that makes any dance floor worshipper feel heard or relegated to a time when this was reality. And despite most club around the globe being closed Eden Burns chose exactly this approach to make music, designed for people joining each other on the floor and around, be heard again as he comes from a country where all this is possible and gives people a reminder of what they might be able to experience soon again – hopefully. Consequently Eden Burns' art:cast is a melodic hope, provided with a feel of nostalgia for many, of carefully compiled and mixed music that is needed in order to remember the beauty of a collective dance experience.

Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
