Jean D.L. & Otto Lindholm - Apophenia I

Belgian composer Otto Lindholm presents his new LP titled FortyTwo, releasing in early June on Totalism with support from Phantom Limb. Consisting of two complementary entities of equal duration (21 minutes), the album really is one. Together, the two longform pieces are like two sides of one coin, like the two motions of a rocking chair; forwards and backwards. The first piece titled “Reg” explores the simplicity of the stroke with veiled, beautiful melodies, while the second called “The Donkey Theory”, built on an octatonic scale, delves into deeper, more atmospheric zones. 

FortyTwo is intentional in its duration, as Lindholm tries to question our relationship with time itself. Extending and expanding the natural sounds of the double bass and expertly arranging and layering them, he is able to toy with time, refocusing the experience on the act of listening itself. The results are rich tapestries of voluptuous tones, deeply felt emotions and elongated melodic motifs which are completely enveloping, almost overwhelming. As the Brussels-based composer and double bassist's focus shifts from instrumental performance to composition, he delves deeper into the world of drone music influenced by contemporary classical composition. 

Otto Lindholm is a composer and double-bassist based in Brussels. He has released music on Icarus Records, Gizeh Records, Houndstooth, Aurora Borealis Recordings, Bedouin Records, Midira Records, 7k!, Takuroku and other labels. His new LP, FortyTwo, is due to be released in 2022 on Totalism with the support of Phantom Limb. He is a keen collaborator, working alongside many artists such as Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow, Aidan Baker, string quintet BOW, Jean D.L., P.Maze, and others.

Everything Falls Apart gathers Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow (Houndstooth), and Otto Lindholm (Icarus, Gizeh, Totalism). The duo took shape during week-long sessions at Ross Tones' studio.

Using his talents as an electronic producer, Ross Tones adds a live third dimension to every pulse of Otto Lindholm's double bass, creating an ever-changing audio shape that exist in the space between them. This composition process combining the best of each musician led them to produce powerful, cinematic and beautiful music together, of which this first single is a fine example.

Wonderfully desolate, as a first official release preceding an upcoming LP due out in 2023 on Totalism, celebrates the arrival of a formidable duo grounded around words from Mark Z. Danielewski’s chef-d’oeuvre House of Leaves : “In fact, the more I try to escape, the less I can breathe. The more I try to hold on, the less I can focus. Something’s leaving me. Parts of me. Everything falls apart.”

Otto Lindholm is a Brussels-based drone artist who performs live with a frankly astounding collection of analog gear, loop stations and a huge double bass. His self-titled debut album was released last month on Icarus Records. The release represents a complete rethink about what it means to compile and commission music in the streaming era – and the tracks and seductively dark atmospheres conjured as a result are exploring all kinds of new sonic territory, too. In short, the cream of leftfield electronic talent have been given a brief: to take the phrase “in Death's dream kingdom”, or the whole of T.S. Eliot's poem The Hollow Men from which it comes, as inspiration.

The resulting 25 tracks will be released, day by day, together with further artist information, to build into the full work. Not an album in the traditional sense, certainly more than just a playlist, it brings together a seriously diverse array of talents into a coherent whole with a vivid aesthetic reverberating through it. It occupies a similar space to the great home listening electronica acts of the 90s – Future Sound Of London, Global Communication, the Artificial Intelligence axis – but there are no throwbacks here: this is radical in sound and thought. Dark music for dark times.

"The eye was in the tomb and looked at Cain.' This, Victor Hugo's verse from ‘La conscience’, was at the origin of this track​ while​ I was working on new themes, in this instance tragedy. Cain’s fratricide and his wandering retribution proved to be quite fertile ground for me. Discovering 'The Hollow Men', the strong correlation between my searching and the poem instantly petrified me. Based originally on an underlining slow, long, repetitive movement, added to the reading of the poem, the track found both its form and finality: a modern infertility dance-​being​ ​looking ​for redemption." ~ @ottolindholm

Otto Lindholm used a technique that was developed by the Italian bass player and composer Stefano Scodanibbio. This technique consists in playing the different overtones of each string with two hands simultaneously thanks to the thumbs.
