Due to a childhood spent between Chicago and Detroit, Maria Elena ‘Ri Ri’ Garcia, also known as Rimarkable, has absorbed a host of influential genres, refining them into her unique take on house and techno. Since her DJing career took off in 1997, she has performed alongside the likes of George Clinton, Francois K, Bonobo, and Gene Farris. Her first produced release was in 2011 with E-Man’s Liberate Recordings, and in early 2021 she signed to UK house music institution Defected, including the Defected Music publishing arm, and became a presenter for the weekly Defected Radio show.

Remixing Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue and Toribio’s recently released ‘Living the Fantasy’ on toucan sounds, the DJ/producer delivers three bumping re-interpretations of the tracks for the label. Her ‘Boogie Joint’ remixes see the originals’ vocals and piano chords bouncing atop swung drums, while her ‘Deep in the 90s’ version draws for a deep bassline and irresistible sax lead. Rounding out the release is the ‘Skate Key Mix’, which sees Rimarkable stretch lush chord and pad combinations under soft, textured percussion.

Brooklyn’s toucan sounds are a label at the forefront of emerging sounds and artists based out of the You Too Can Woo studios in New York. Since its inception in 2018, the imprint has been championing acts such as musclecars, Haruka Salt, Brandon Markell Holmes, and more.

Chicago’s Anthony Nicholson has a storied history in dance music. For decades he has been crafting some of the best house music around on labels such as his own Circular Motion and Infinite Audio, as well as on legendary imprints Prescription and Clairaudience, adopting a host of aliases along the way. Now landing on Brooklyn staple toucan sounds for his latest release, the DJ/producer links up with Brandon Markell Holmes for ‘Found’ this July. Leading the release, the original mix of title track ‘Found’ sees Nicholson’s lush production peppered with Markell Holmes’ emotive singing, making for a dreamy vocal house cut. Stripping away the vocals, the ‘Adlibstrumental Pass’ sees the instrumental elements take front and centre for a welcome addition to the package. A release party around the release will take place at Elsewhere, NYC, on 29th July 2022. Anthony Nicholson ‘Found’ drops on toucan sounds on 22nd July 2022 as a Traxsource Exclusive, followed by a worldwide release on 5th August 2022.

Shifting Gears aka Hoshina Anniversary returns to toucan sounds with ‘Sky Disco’.

Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Hoshina Anniversary has previously appeared on ESP Institute, Musar Recordings, and Young Marco’s Safe Trip, fusing traditional Japanese instrumentation with House & Techno sensibilities across his productions. Returning to Brooklyn’s toucan sounds label under his Shifting Gears moniker following ‘Drum Nation’ in January, the DJ/producer delivers three addictive, crunchy house jams.
Leading the release, the title cut ‘Sky Disco’ sees pumping drums and unruly melodies interplaying with stark piano hits throughout. ‘Blue, Yellow, Red’ follows with freaked-out FX, rattling percussion, and eerie FX combining for a wonky club track, before ‘Mayfield’s Diner’ closes the release with a dose of euphoric house, as rubbery basslines, floating pads, and synth stabs ring out for the duration.

Brandon Markell Holmes re-releases three tracks on vinyl via toucan sounds, joined by a fresh remix from Derrick Carter.

Since first appearing on toucan sounds in 2020, Brandon Markell Holmes’ inimitable voice has seen him establish himself as a staple on the label. Now, the imprint collects three iconic appearances from the artist on vinyl, with an additional remix from legendary house lynchpin Derrick Carter. Originally released as part of a collaborative EP with Rogue Vogue, Derrick bumps up the tempo of ‘Someone Else’, introducing earworm keys and tough drums, while maintaining the warmth of Brandon’s vocals.

“I called Derrick on the phone and asked him to remix it a few weeks before I moved to NYC. He said he liked it, and he thought it made sense because he only does things that “make sense.” Not in a conservative or rigid way, but in the way that only a legendary talent and taste maker makes sense of things.”

Brandon is a formally trained theatre actor, working within themes of social observation and the symbiotic relationship between art and history. He’s also a musician working his own art into history, having appeared on the Grammy-nominated Gorillaz album ‘Humanz’, as well as being featured in Afropunk for his visual EP ‘Inertia’.
