Long Weekends and the End of Long Weeks

Brighton shoegaze luminaries Air Formation return on … with ‘Were We Ever Here’, their first new material since reforming in 2014. Loosely based around the group of songs they were working on in 2010 before their split, the band worked on the EP in secret, stating “We thought it would be a more exciting, organic, experience if we just got on with it un-announced and released it as fast as we could.”

Air Formation formed in 2000, long before their spiritual forebears Slowdive and Loop were once again considered acceptable influences. Since signing to Club AC30, long a bastion of the modern shoegaze sound, in 2005, the band gained a devoted following and for albums such as 2007’s Daylight Storms (which was mastered by alternative rock legend Kramer) and their final LP, Nothing To Wish For (Nothing to Lose), in 2010. Their incendiary live show also saw them share stages with the likes of Vessels and Efterklang.

Ten years on from their first release for Club AC30, the 57 Octaves Below EP, the four songs on ‘Were We Ever Here’ cover every corner of Air Formation’s sound, whilst adding surprising new touches. The swathes of feedback and distortion are all present and correct, along with swooping New Order synths. Slow-building opener ‘I Could Stay’ comes to life in a swooning burst of fuzzed-up bass and hyperactive Ride-like drums. Closing track ‘The Wasted Days’ takes the entire EP into another gear, shifting from kinetic drone-pop to expansive post-rock territory, bringing this record to a close in a shower of noise.

Say the band themselves: “We really feel 'Were We Ever Here' showcases the best of Air Formation, but then takes it on a different path to any of the music has come before.” While their break-up in 2011 involved no fireworks or fistfights, the band do admit that “what once felt effortless and exciting was becoming hard to hold together, and that is no way to make music.” ‘Were We Ever Here’ suggests that the band’s spark has returned. With a vengeance.

Current Affairs are a post punk band from Glasgow, neatly navigating the line between new wave and goth. Formed in 2016 and Comprising Joan (ex-The Royal We/Seconds/Rose McDowall's band), Seb (ex-Anxiety/Pissy), Josh (The Downs/Kaspar Hauser/ex-Rose McDowall's band) and Andrew (Shopping/As Ondas).
  
A cassette called Object was released along the way on Comodillo Tapes and in December 2018 the band’s first 7” Breeding Feeling -bw- Draw The Line was put out into the world by Not Unloved, followed in June 2019 by Buckle Up -bw- World’s In Crisis, out via Berlin’s Dot Dot Dot (...).

Object & Subject is the accumulation of the band’s output over 3 years (excluding the Dot Dot Dot release), now gathered and synthesised into one convenient disc. “We never agonised over our sound or direction, but worked to our punk strengths and leaned into our pop tendencies collectively. On the cusp of releasing an album and re-imagining our live set up, it feels great to be putting out this overview of what we’ve made so far. “

'Into The Country' was recorded throughout the year of 2016 in-between touring/working and Cory & Chris moving to Mexico and Australia respectively. Basic tracks were recorded by longtime collaborator Ian Rundell in his studio and then messed with in our practice space at the Monofonus compound in Austin, TX. Chris did most of the heavy lifting. Cory did some of the drum machines, and George was fiddling with some electronic gadgets, with lyrics once again mined from the info wars comment section and various other stressful situations like airports and hospitals. This is the first proper Spray Paint LP since 2016's 'Feel The Clamps' (Goner). Since then collaborations with Protomartyr, Ben Wallers, Ben Mackie, and Dan Melchior have been released.

 

Though Spray Paint have no touring plans in the immediate future, the trio will reconvene in Austin this November to for multiple nights at Hotel Vegas as part of the Monofonus Press weekend taking place at said venue and the M.P. compound, November 22-24 (other participants include The Rebel, Beech Creeps, Tashi Dorji, Sun Araw, Obnox, Claire Rousay, Ralph White, Brandy, Matchess and many others).
