Fortuna POP! (UK/Europe) and Slumberland Records (US/Canada) are proud to announce the new album by the Edinburgh based folk-rock troubadour Dan Willson who records as WITHERED HAND. “New Gods” is his stunning second album, following his critically acclaimed debut “Good News”.

Active in the world of visual art and dabbling in music for many years, Withered Hand’s Dan Willson came late to singing and songwriting at age 30, in a period of reflection between the death of a close friend and the birth of his first child. The resultant material, much of which went on to become the album “Good News,” has been praised for its depth and startling honesty.

Withered Hand has been embraced by Fife-based musical powerhouse the Fence Collective (whose sovereign King Creosote guests on the new album), seen his songs picked up on MTV and cult series Skins, and gained a legion of fans including Jarvis Cocker and Rolling Stone Magazine USA (who decreed him “Artist to Watch”).

A prolific live performer, recent Withered Hand shows have included collaborations with Pam Berry of seminal 90's US noise-pop band Black Tambourine and a rotating cast of musical friends embellishing Dan's exuberant and original songwriting alongside fragile and uplifting solo performances.

The long-awaited second album (produced by Tony Doogan – Mountain Goats/Belle & Sebastian etc - and part-funded by arts council body Creative Scotland) features guest appearances from the likes of Pam Berry, Eugene Kelly of The Vaselines and members of Belle & Sebastian and Frightened Rabbit.

The five years since “Good News” was recorded has seen Willson honing his songcraft, building his audience and gaining critical momentum. “New Gods” is a beautifully executed collection of songs from one of Scotland’s most gifted songwriters.

Following the January release of their celebrated second album, The Age of Fracture, CYMBALS close the year out with a limited edition 7" entitled What Eternity, featuring two new songs - 'Talk To Me' and 'Innocence'. Both songs were produced by Dreamtrak and mixed by Dan Rejmer. Marking the end of what has been an incredibly eventful twelve months, the 7" will be released on 1st December through Tough Love. Note to the collectors - 100 copies will be pressed on blue vinyl.

The songs on What Eternity come to the wider world at almost the same time they did to the band – both tracks were recorded in September of this year, very soon after CYMBALS returned from their first US tour. Emboldened by the reception they received from audiences in cities thousands of miles from home, a concerted effort was made to harness the energy and enthusiasm of those US shows and to create something that reflected the band right now. The circumstances around The Age of Fracture dictated it be recorded over a long period of time, whereas there is a immediacy to these new songs at odds with the long stretches of time that often bridge the gap between a song being recorded and its release – they are very much of the moment, both direct and vital. As such, they might well be CYMBALS’ best songs to date. As singer Jack, says:

"These songs are close to what I am feeling during this current moment, in other words this season, or the stretch of time from spring to autumn this year. They are a little more personal and introspective, which is some kind of difference for us.  We don't want to explain them too much, given that so many words accompanied the album we wrote last year and released earlier this year - these songs have no notes with them, no explanations, no justifications.  The only thing we should say is that the title is borrowed from a book by Marguerite Yourcenar, who herself borrowed it from a poem. We've messed with the punctuation and in so doing changed the meaning to suit what we wanted to say."

CYMBALS will be playing CMJ in New York next week, along with two shows in France. More live dates will be confirmed in the coming months.

GROUNDERS' new album will be available May 12.

“Where do you go? Waiting around, where do you go from here?” wonders the chorus of “Secret Friend,” the first single from GROUNDERS’ debut self-titled LP. 

With a dreamy, reverb-drenched intro, the song drifts alongside layers of wobbly arpeggiated synth lines and space-age guitar melodies. It’s the opening track, and it’s also a fitting intro to GROUNDERS. It shimmers and gleams, but there’s a scrappy, stripped-back undertone that chips away at any polish. For every catchy hook and lush arrangement throughout the album there’s a woozy counterpoint that keeps things slightly off-kilter. 

Where do you go from here? Into the weird and wonderful pop world of GROUNDERS.  

This spring, the Toronto-based band – Andrew Davis (vocals and guitar), Daniel Busheikin (keyboards), Mike Searle (Bass) and Evan Lewis (guitar) – will release their first full-length album, a collection of dense and intricate pop music under the gauzy veil of krautrock and psychedelia.   In the time between releasing the Wreck of a Smile EP in 2013 and laying demos for their debut album, GROUNDERS rediscovered their love for classic pop music, an appreciation that had waned over the years as they became obsessed with circumventing the conventional. They listened to pop staples like David Bowie and Devo, and revisited old favourites like Velvet Underground, Neu and the Zombies. When GROUNDERS finally came up for air, they had a newfound love for pop and a glut of ideas for a debut LP.  

Meanwhile, Meditation for Dummies and David Lynch’s self-help guide Catching the Big Fish, on transcendental meditation and the creative process, were passed around the van while touring through North America. As Davis’s interest in meditation increased, his lyrics began to reflect his search for serenity and inner peace. 

The album came to life in two distinct spaces: Davis’s bedroom in Toronto’s sleepy High Park neighbourhood; and a spacious two-car garage packed with vintage gear from various pawn shops and second-hand stores across the country. 

After recruiting DIANA’s Kieran Adams to handle drums, the band headed into the studio with longtime pal Marcel Ramagnano (Born Ruffians, Absolutely Free) to record. Months of tracking, tinkering and layering later, GROUNDERS enlisted the incomparable David Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Holy Fuck) to give each song the bombastic, fried analog treatment he’s become known for.   

First single "Secret Friend" sounds like a bleached and sunbaked Zombies; “Vyvanse,” which yes, is named after the ADHD drug, contains a lilting guitar riff that’ll break your heart; “Pull It Over Me” careens into the dreamy ether courtesy of a wistful cyclical guitar that’s the epitome of a lazy summer’s day; “No Ringer” is a wobbly Silver Apples trance doused in a saxophone freak-out; "Fool's Banquet" sparkles like early Broadcast flooded by constant glistening waves of pleasure.  After cross-country tours, an acclaimed debut EP and a David Lynch-inspired spiritual journey, GROUNDERS have finally come of age.
