A year on from their critically lauded album ‘Negativity’ and on the cusp of their ten year anniversary as a band, Deer Tick are returning to Europe where they will be touring with The Gaslight Anthem. 

To celebrate their milestone anniversary of 10 years as a band, the Rhode Island quintet have planned a six night residency at Brooklyn Bowl in NYC, starting December 26 and ending on New Year's Eve, where the band will perform five of their favourite band’s records from start to finish and culminate the celebrations on New Year’s Eve with a fan-selected set of 25 Deer Tick songs. 

The band have put together a playlist of their songs to cover their ten year existence as Deer Tick. Of the selection process, John explains:

“I think these songs do a good job of balancing the songwriting, musicianship, and restlessness of Deer Tick. They also highlight the fact that over the past 10 years, Deer Tick has finally eased into becoming a full-fledged band, with permanent members and everything!

Like A Wave

Toussaint Morrison wrote the 1st verse for Baby Gots Venom in winter of 2014 and then, being the well-practiced self-saboteur he is, he stopped writing out of fear. Getting around to the spirit of Lesser Restoration, his soon-to-be-released debut album, Morrison befriends all his ghosts whether they be welcoming or not. Baby Gots Venom is no exception, and although it has disguised itself in the stripped down niceties of guitar, hand claps, and Morrison palming a plastic lid as a kick drum, listen closely and you’ll hear the new single for what it truly is: a neurotic dance on a one-way cyclical track. Whether the choreographed steps are cycling upwards or downwards, we’ll leave that to your own assessment.
Produced by Toussaint’s former bandmate from The Blend, Edward Folly on guitar, and his Phantom Menace, Dr. Wylie on everything else, Baby Gots Venom puts forth the best of Morrison in an unholy cabal of rap & soul shouting. Coming around to finish writing the song over 2 years later, it would be the highest deception to say this tune is “fresh”. Instead, it would be more appropriate to market this as “barrel-aged”.

Toussaint Morrison is a hopeless romantic and a super-villain. Sadly, in a world where definitive genres are ever-shrinking, Morrison still hasn’t been invited to any of the parties (which is where the super-villain part comes in). Abandoning a decade of front man’ing for live bands The Blend and Lazlo Supreme, Morrison joined forces with the evil Dr. Wylie, producer and confidant. The collaboration between the two has already generated this past year’s #1 Album on RapReviews.com’s Top Ten Albums of 2011, and looks to establish a national tour while depleting the monthly limit of free downloads from their bandcamp site. 

The 3-time national slam poet has not only paid his dues, he’s insisting on paying more than his tab; sampling an unconventional ensemble of sounds from Feist to Chicago to Weezer and on. Relaying tales of relationships doomed by bar-close, requited love thru emasculating reconciliation, and a run-in with a 2nd grader at a café over coffee & chemotherapy; the adventures of Toussaint Morrison Is Not My Boyfriend could warm even the hearts of the most cynical (Ann Coulture and winter in Minneapolis included). 

Funded by friends, family, and perfect strangers via Kickstarter, his new mixtape is the 1st in a series of 3 (consider it the first piece of the triforce). 17 stories/tracks/titles long, "Toussaint Morrison Is Not My Boyfriend" is the largest piece of literary work he has ever laid to sound. Also, as a rule of warning, when Toussaint isn’t crooning to women on campus or freestyling in character as Luke Cage, he’s busy concocting bonus tracks to follow an album such as the one before you, somewhat like low blows after the bell.

Sexy Weekend by Scoundrels

Within less than a week of entering life, Toussaint Morrison was baptized in a New Orleans kitchen sink, named after the man who led the first successful slave rebellion, and raised by two activist parents who were called to the streets of the Crescent City to protest the Vietnam War. However, in a few years, he’d take a sudden move to the frozen tundra of Minneapolis by way of his parent’s divorce, and found himself playing toy instruments alongside his grandfather, a professional jazz trombonist. Years later, shuffling through his father’s tape collection during road trips to visit family in Detroit, Morrison was given a makeshift intro to Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted… and as an adolescent between entirely different worlds and conditions he never asked for, began writing.

Now, after a storied music career and touring for years, Morrison surfaces a new album, The Very Best of Ricky & Jane, name-dropping his parents in the title with a fleur de lis emblazoned on the cover in solidarity with his birthplace in the Big Easy. The Very Best touts tracks such as ALL SAINTS that tip a cap to his late grandfather who introduced him to playing an instrument, and his Detroit-born father who taught him how to speak at rallies. Following with RIOTS WORK, a metallic street ballad to his involvement in the uprising of his home city of Minneapolis, protesting police brutality and other forms of white supremacy throughout two long years of community action on the heels of police murdering yet another Black man in public with seeming impunity. This new body of work highlights the dichotomy of Morrison’s upbringing, celebrating a life of music a damn good trouble.
