Sometimes a song hits you in a way you feel more than understand. It just feels good to sing it and have it hit your body. Our honest first connection to Boots of Spanish Leather was just that. As we sang the lyrics of two lovers growing more and more distant it became clear that the essence of the song had passed under our skin and brought a strange healing we needed from this last year. We've had to say goodbye in many ways this past year: some of those things were good, but some are still hard to let go of. To us, this song is about saying goodbye and accepting the newness of the present we're in.

The other day we were listening to a podcast from the New York Times and in it, they had this quote. It was from an author living in a country thinking about the possibility of the atomic bomb being dropped on them. The quote ended with “let that bomb, when it comes, find us doing sensible and human things -- praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts -- not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs.” - CS Lewis

While things like social distancing and the closing of our favorite bars do not allow for the full fruition of this quote it was nonetheless inspiring. So this weekend we headed up to Colorado to be with some of our favorite musicians and create together. We hope this song gives you hope that someday this will be over.

It'll All Be Over (Supreme Jubilees Cover)

To add to the strangeness of these times, we decided this summer to work on a Christmas album, because why not? At first it felt silly, but as we dug into the content and sonic landscape of the songs we started to feel that these songs were beyond just a seasonal message. For us they felt like we were able to dig up a certain kind of hope in them amidst our national backdrop of personal, political and social unrest that was unexpected and welcomed. In this first single release “Lo How A Rose is Blooming” we found a solidarity in the traditional chorus lyrics that in the darkness we are in now, there is a hope blooming. I think that hope for us was a world where empathy and compassion are at the root of all our decisions. Whether it be in policy, how we listen to marginalized people groups, how we vote out toxic power or even talk to ourselves and our family. Like all our music we hope this song gives people something to hold onto like it has done for, even if it’s just a simple moment of respite from their burdens.

Every story begins somewhere. Ours began in the mountains of Flagstaff, Arizona. We were originally a group of strangers who found each other through a deep love for music & story telling.  Over the years we have become a family, writing not just our music together, but our lives. Our sights are set on being students of story with one another and loving people through our craft.
