初音ミクは、クリプトン・フューチャー・メディアが発売しているバーチャルシンガーソフトウェア及びそのキャラクター。「電子の歌姫」の二つ名でも知られる。「ボカロ」という文化・ジャンルを築き、「初音ミク現象」によってネット発の文化・音楽シーンを大きく変化させた。ボーカロイド*とは、歌詞とメロディを入力して、コンピュータに歌を歌わせるソフトウェアです。当初はソフトウェアを開発した YAMAHAと、英語圏で展開することを考えていました。製造販売のクリプトン･フューチャー･メディアは、海外のサウンド制作会社と深いつながりがあったので、複数の会社に声をかけて、製品も英語、日本語、スペイン語......という順で開発を予定していました。

でも、英語圏での展開があまりうまくいかなかったんです。宗教と絡んで、「人が人をつくる」ことへの抵抗感があって......。だから僕が日本向けの製品開発を担当することになったときは、日本のカルチャーに合うものにしたいと思っていました。

そこでまず、「ボーカル」と「アンドロイド」の合成語である「ボーカロイド」という語の印象から、どのような売り出し方がいいのかを探っていきました。SF映画でよく使われているのが合成音（シンセサイザー）ということもあって、SF、つまり未来的なものをテーマにしようと思いました。さらに、日本のSFカルチャーの中で作られた女性型アンドロイドのイメージや、アニメや漫画のようなイラストイメージと合うものにしたいと考えました。
