Before turning into a DJ and electronic music producer, he has been playing in bands since he was 13 years old.  The album is full of emotional chord progressions played by Kapote on various keyboards. Sometimes reminding music from the past without being retro at all. The bass lines and melodies are inspired by jazz fusion from the 1970ies. And he programmed syncopated grooves that come from Afro-American dance music. There are influences from Japanese electronic music (Yellow Magic Orchestra), from 1980ies Synthwave and from 1990ies electronica (like Squarepusher and Luke Vibert).

Toy Tonics releases a new track by label head honcho Kapote. „Spaceship” is the first pre-single of the 2nd (upcoming) Kapote album. 

Kapote aka Mathias Modica didn't release much music in the last few years, as he was mainly building up the Toy Tonics label with his friends and helping the younger Toy Tonics producers to develop their sound and releases. His last music was a collabo EP with Sam Ruffillo ("Robot Salsa" EP) and his own EP called “Electric Slide”. Before that, he did an album “What it is”, released in 2019 on Toy Tonics (that was supported by all kinds of DJs from DJ Harvey, A-Track, and Chromeo to Breakbot).

Here comes a mellow and beautifully futuristic tune that connects jazzfunk and house music. It's a first teaser to what the complete Kapote album might sound like. The song, like the album is inspired by Japanese electronic music from the 1980ies, American fusion-jazz and Italo disco.

Toy Tonics delivers the 2nd pre-single of label boss KAPOTE’s upcoming 2nd album. An instrumental tune that combines melodic inspirations from German electronic music, Italo disco with the dreamy world of Japanese 1980s electronica and the vibes of 1970 fusion jazz. Yes, some might hear influences from Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yellow Magic Orchestra, Italian electronic disco or even Chick Corea’s electric jazz or Kraut Rock melancholy in the new Kapote tracks. And Prana & Passione is a good hint on how the whole album will sound.

Kapote started Toy Tonics Records almost 10 years ago with some friends, after he had been known under the name MUNK and his former label GOMMA records for years. He used to produce music for and with artists like LCD Soundsystem, Peaches, Franz Ferdinand, the first album of WhoMadeWho or the New York street art legend The Rammellzee. He changed the name when he started Toy Tonics as a new label that is dedicated to a dance floor sound that combines musicality, sonic diversity and positivity with DJ culture. While techno and trance became darker and harder over the last few years, Kapote and his artists wanted to offer new forms of house music that combine different styles from Afrofunk and American underground dance music to neo soul, Italian disco or French indie dance. A new dance sound based on good songs and fresh ideas to create real emotions on dance floors.

In the last few years, Kapote was mainly helping the young new DJs and producers that he found for the Toy Tonics label to develop their sounds (Coeo, Cody Currie, Gee Lane, Bárbara Boeing, Sam Ruffillo). But now, as the label and its artists started to „fly“, Kapote aka Mathias Modica finally went back to the studio and developed his own musical ideas. Sounds that are based on dance music and the 4 to the floor beat and go much further than the efficacy of a DJ tool. It's all about creating music that you can listen at home and creates positive emotions. Music that you want to hear on repeat.   

After his debut album as Kapote in 2019 and a solo EP called „Electric Slide“ and a collabo EP with Italian producer Sam Ruffillo („Robot Salsa“) this tune is part of the next Kapote album. It’s worth reminding Kapote’s former works as Munk: Four albums released on Gomma Records between 2005 and 2015 that are a wild mix of styles and that became legendary back in those indie dance days. Music supported by all kinds of DJs from Soulwax, Erol Alkan, James Murphy and Andrew Weatherall to Blessed Madonna, Seth Troxler, Folamour or Justice and Laurent Garnier.

Similar to Gomma Records, Kapote’s former label (which was active from 2003 - 2015 and used to become one of the key labels of the „indie dance“ scene of those years) in recent times Toy Tonics has become one of the key labels of the new house and growing indie dance scene. Only in 2024 the label made more than 100 Toy Tonics Jams, the label parties in 15 countries. Being invited to festivals like SONAR, KALA festival, Montreux Jazz festival, Melt and many more to bring their sound. And doing sold-out label shows in Europe’s leading clubs, from Phonox in London to REX in Paris. Including a new residency in Panorama Bar Berlin (the label's homebase).

In fact, it’s not anymore a techno town but a city with a very diverse musical landscape with musicians and DJs from all over the world that create new forms of jazz, experimental, African, Latin and experimental music.

And of course,Toy Tonics has become a big part of that ‘new Berlin’ with its wild mix of new house music, Y2K sounds, Italian disco influences, new wave and indie dance vibes. The song ‘Berlin Boogie Town’ is dedicated to this new reality. And to the new party scene. While old Berlin clubs like Watergate or Wilde Renate close, Toy Tonics is a resident at Panorama now and makes party’s every 3 weeks in the most relevant clubs like OXI, RSO and others with up to 2000 kids dancing.

The song combines indie dance and Italo disco with 1980s Japanese electronica and some synth wave.

Kapote plays keys, bass, flutes and percussion, he plays synth solos and sings on a few tracks. The complexity of the arrangements makes this music never boring. Lot of melodies and solos that catch the listener. Colorful soundscapes that make you want to listen or dance to this album more and discover details also after you heard it several times.

Toy Tonics does the Spanish proto Hip-House! New artist ALOT, living in New York but comes from Argentina. 26-year-old multi-instrumentalist, rapper, producer, writer and skater who moved to the big apple right after school, trying to "make it" in the hometown of Hip Hop and street culture. His sound is infected by NYC culture in the late 80ies, when early rap and the Latin Bronx culture mashed up, when old school Breakdance Music started to morph into early Dance Music and the Disco clubs were thriving. The Latinos met Afro-American culture and big new underground movements were born, which were the foundation of street style, fashion and music trends over the last years. ALOT the youngster, goes back to the origins and brings up his very own, super fresh, totally rocking proto-house rap in a Latino way.

ALOT - Latinos en Nueva York (Extended Mix)

JKriv returns to home base Razor-N-Tape with the Intuition EP, a strong statement of how far his sound has traveled in the 2+ years since his last artist release on the label.

Blueprint, a driving club burner rooted on an unrelenting bass line, builds slowly through conversational synth elements until it opens up into a soulful vocal loop that explodes in a euphoric peak. The title track of the EP is a dubby slow roller that was equal parts inspired by 90s Ryuichi Sakamoto records and modern G-funk. Over its lithe piano, hooky vocoder melodies, and rolling bass, Megatronic delivers a melancholic message of relationship loss and renewal, and coda vocals are added by J himself.

Zone 1, an ode to David Morales’ amazing Red Zone 90s remix catalog, drives hard with insistent analog drums and absolutely filthy bass beneath a pillowy layer of lush and acidic synth elements. Wearing the influence of J’s favorite producer Larry Heard proudly on its sleeve, Paula’s Dance is a symphony of intertwining analog gear, with a mysterious and gorgeous vocal by Mexican singer Pahua.

Completed while JKriv was undergoing treatment for lymphoma in the latter part of 2024, this record is both deeply personal and a triumphant statement of determination under adversity. The beautiful cover artwork by The Myno captures both the vulnerability and focus that defined the period in which J made this music.
