This is a true story with some embellishments, but not the ones you might think. A name has been changed for artistic purposes because there are no innocents to protect. This is part one of a two-part series with the story of trail mix coming first and the ingredients in the follow up track.  I would call this Dirty Experimental Industrial Spoken Word Blues. Think Skinny Puppy meets Pink Floyd. It’s lyrical without rhyming, timed but not rhythmic, spoken but not rapped and both scripted and improvised. Each section of verse has a slightly different rhythm with the muted guitar creating the tension into each break. It was originally going to have samples from Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean. Some of the beat, the muted congas and toms, and some lyrics from that remain. The vocal effects were inspired by the Voice from Dune by David Lynch and the aliens from Galaxy Quest. The Train is the only sample in the track and represents Atlanta. All the music and vocals I created and composed. For the guitar I tried to stretch my programming skills and express as many techniques as I could including pitch bending, volume control, hammering, harmonics and muted tones.  

Lyrics:
Now I’m gonna tell you about Trail mix. Before I get started there are a few things you need to understand. First, we used to own an underground nightclub in Atlanta, back in the 90s. Now, most clubs have heavy security and don’t take too kindly to dealers dealing and users using out in the open.  But we saw things differently.  We didn’t give a shit.  So, dealers did their business out in the open and people laid out lines on tables like silverware. This meant that a lot of drugs came through our club, and I mean a lot.  A rock and roll cornucopia of pharmaceuticals fit for the likes of Keith Richards himself. Although we didn’t have any visible security, we had Big John. Big John was a hell of a guy, he stood six foot 4 and weighed 285. He was a Dixie Mafia, Former pimp, and bank robber, ran with a crew back in the 70s. He Served 15 Years for it. The other thing you should know, if you don’t already know, is that powdered drugs often come in little zip lock baggies and the drugs tend to get stuck in the corners of these baggies. But we had drugs in such quantities that scraping out the corners of a baggie seemed pointless.  Still, no one wants to throw away drugs if they don’t absolutely have to. So, Big John just started throwing the corner filled baggies in a shoe box. Soon we all did the same and we started throwing other stuff in, like unidentified pills and capsules. One day the shoe box was full. So, Big John got us all together and we scraped out the corners, broke open all the capsules and crushed up all the pills.  We mixed it all together in one giant pile of holy fucking shit, a succotash of substances, a menagerie of medications.  We called it Trail Mix. It was a high like no other, a raptured euphoric jubilation sounding the advent of every neurotransmitter firing all at once.  Trail Mix. The next time, Big John got a wide mouth 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew. We stuffed that bottle until one day it was full and Big John poured Mountain Dew back in, mixed it up and we all did the dew. Trail Mix. Then one day, one of our buddies brought in a sack full of hydroponic psychedelic mushrooms and we made really strong mushroom tea. Then Big John took the Trail Mix stuff we’d collected and mixed it into the tea. As if Trail Mix wasn’t already a high on some other level, the tea added a hallucinatory element to make it literally unimaginable.  Trail Mix.  It was like seeing through time and space, like traveling in a hundred dimensions without leaving the floor you’d recently melted into as a liquid spread over undulating peaks that carried your consciousness to the far reaches of the universe at your fingertips stretching out to touch the very hand of God. This is part two of a two-part series with the story of trail mix coming first and this being the list of possible ingredients. This is not just a random list of drugs, but rather a list of the drugs I was sure could have been mixed into trail mix. It doesn’t mean each bump contained all of the following but could contain any amount of anything listed here.  This is not meant to be a complete list, I am sure there are drugs that are missing from the list, but it is as complete as my memory serves. Although some of these are over the counter and quite common, I can tell you something about every drug in this list and often when and how they came through the club as well as my own personal experience with each. The trickiest part of this was creating a song out of a list of drugs that would be lyrical and getting the pronunciations correct of which I’m sure a few are not. I replaced what would be a 303 with a twangy guitar and used a bass in place of what would be something dubsteppish and grinding for a more natural sound.  Again, the train is the only sampled sound and represents Atlanta as in the first track. All the other sounds I created and composed.

I only used 6 tracks for this one, but I think it still has a big sound despite the self-imposed limitations.

This song is dedicated to my friend Keith Long.

I recorded my voice first for this one and built everything else around it. I carefully set each note of the acoustic guitar to strum in the correct direction offsetting them by 1/128th notes.  The base is a layered System 100 over a 303 and the keyboard hit is a layered piano over an electric piano for a nice full sound. The hardest thing to do without actual physical equipment is to make something sound improvised which I hope I accomplished with the electric guitar which is layered over a synth. The track is essentially one long guitar solo. I only used 8 tracks for this one and tried to keep it simple yet full sounding.

Track 23 - Music for the Internet currently represents 3 projects produced by one person.

We are one person with no formal musical training and no actual equipment. Everything we produce is composed via VSTs and Reaper.  The only actual equipment we have are 2 Hard Drives and a Microphone, but it's a really nice microphone.

Beat Fuzz - Deconstructed Mashup Remixes. Sample Heavy, but we try to make these remixes our own and create a new sound while keeping the original themes.

F. Allyal and the Ball Breakers - Dirty Country Blues Road House Rock n Roll.  This is a faux ensemble with only me as a member, but I try to visualize each track as a band with members, venue, talent and I manually add mistakes for a more real sound.  These track have no samples, this is all me and only me, every sound is me and with no actual instruments.
 
The Marthasville Terminal Underground - Experimental & Industrial, Gothic Electronica. Can be sample heavy, but very eclectic and wide ranging in sound.
