2022 has unarguably been a great year for Electro both with overall visibility for the genre as well as with the sheer number of quality releases being put out over the course of the year. This was also a year in which I took a break from my show and handed DJing responsibilities over to DJ friends from around the world. Couldn't be happier with how the year turned out for the show. I feel like It was a busy year both production-wise and promotion-wise for @DVSNME and @DarkScienceElectro respectively, however, I found some time to put together a mix of my favorite 22 tracks from 2022. For this episode of @DarkScienceElectro we check in with friend-of-the-show Rob Witschakowski, better known as @The-Exaltics

Starting in 2006 with the founding of the project by Nico Jagiella and Rob, The Exaltics have been a driving force in the popularization of the beloved genre we call Electro. The following year in 2007, after the inception of The Exaltics project, the duo created the label @Solar_One_Music - The imprint has released music from many amazing producers such as MSRG, Heinrich Mueller, Gesloten Cirkel, Obergman, Franck Kartell, Nullptr, Das Muster, ERP, Ekman, Gosub, and many more. In addition, there are a few sub-labels that are utilized as well, such as Between Places, Rattleznake, Unhöerbar. Maschine Brennt (@thenander) is a project by Joacim Thenander, an experienced DJ and producer who started in the early '80s being part of various music groups before focusing on techno and house music. Maschine Brennt was born as a side project in 1991 and made only a few public performances until his comeback in 2014, when he returned with releases on Plonk to later join Encrypted Records. His musical style is a blend of early 1980s electro and the distinct German Düsseldorf sound. Enjoy it!

Annie Hall - Memories That Never Happened

Annie Hall returns to Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit label with an EP entitled Memories That Never Happened. This record represents the producer’s third time on CPU after 2016’s Tenured Positions and 2020’s Fum, and it is also the latest release in a busy couple of years for Annie Hall which have also seen her drop EPs on 20:20 Vision, Orson Records and Random Island. The momentum Annie Hall has built up in recent times carries through to a dynamic collection of productions which bring enough heft in the beats to keep the dancefloor happy while also including all manner of details in the production.

Memories That Never Happened begins with the title-track, a twitchy yet wistful cut which perfectly matches its name. There’s bite to the broken-beat electro pulse, growling bass and robotic declamations of “it’s Annie”, but the makeup of the track is simultaneously rather rose-tinted, particularly when some chemtrails of a synth lead enter later on. The overall effect is as thoughtful as it is stimulating, akin to the halcyon productions of Daniel Avery.

If ‘Memories That Never Happened’ is somewhat plaintive, following jam ‘Problematic Tape Recorder’ has the bit between its teeth from the get-go. The beat crashes and snaps, and when played off shimmering stabs of synth it all adds up to a Wip3out rush that nods to both the old Rephlex Records sound as well as contemporary practitioners like Nightwave. Once again the synth lead is used lightly here, more an augmentation to the beat than the centrepiece - another demonstration of Annie Hall’s ability to write with focus even when the overall intent is to move bodies in the club.

The energy of ‘Problematic Tape Recorder’ is spun in an unusual direction on ‘Subsequent Experiments’, the first track of Memories That Never Happened’s B-side. This cut may be the quickest on the record, but this does not mean it shouts the loudest. Indeed, ‘Subsequent Experiments’ may be the most ornate production here, full of shadowy sonics and a deconstructed beat running at D&B speed. A kind of shadowrealm version of Planet Mu’s early drill & bass explorations crossed with UVB-76’s darkside post-Metalheadz excursions, this one is an eerie thrill.

After the busy ‘Subsequent Experiments’, Annie Hall slows down to take the EP’s home straight at mid-tempo. On ‘Unparalleded Comfort’, keyboard stabs slide over a rhythm that’s at once driving enough for the dancefloor and nuanced enough to allow little half-melodies of synth to flit around above. It’s a fitting closer for this EP, almost playing like an amalgamation of the elements which made the rest of Memories That Never Happened so appealing.

Annie Hall returns to Central Processing Unit with Memories That Never Happened, an EP of masterful productions which will delight both clubbers and home-listeners.

FRANCOIS DILLINGER glides between the two worlds of electro and techno. His journey through the genres is dark while retaining a mercilessly intelligent, dancefloor-oriented quality. His Live & DJ sets lean heavily into the generation of hypnotic loops, creating long protracted mixes between elements of unshakeable tension. As a former promoter, long-time performer, and supporter of the scene – he’s been a part of the Detroit underground for over 20 years. Over the last few years, DILLINGER has released four albums across Diffuse Reality, Specimen Records, International Chrome and EC Underground. He was featured on several compilations, most notably on Planet E’s Detroit Love series, while over 30 artists remixed his tracks including the likes of Keith ‘K1’ Tucker, Detroit’s Filthiest, Jensen Interceptor, Luxus Varta and others. DILLINGER also hosts MINDFRAME, a monthly residency on Detroit’s Deep Space Radio that features guest performances from across the global electro scene. Support for his music continues from the likes of Dave Clarke and Richie Hawtin; with his LP under the alias ‘The Thousand Order’ was named as Best New Electronic Music by Bandcamp in 2022. FRANCOIS also continues his work with Detroit-based art collaboratives Missing Faces and 313[030] projekt, creating immersive A/V installations with shows planned across Detroit, Berlin and beyond.

In "CYBIS", DILLINGER unleashes a nightmare of minimalistic code and forgotten disk space, threatening to rip the user into bits through the brutal defragmentation process. Brace yourself for a descent into madness, as all connection to reality is lost and your identity is submerged in the cold embrace of circuitry.

 

But the madness doesn't end there. In "RankTrek", the programs will take hold, and you are forced to give in completely to their demands. Your mind becomes one with the machine, as you surrender all control and are dragged deeper into the abyss.

The third part of the Mycology series sees Emile Facey expand the earthy and deep electro sound world he forged with the first two instalments. Alongside the emotional dancefloor journeys we expect from him, each side of the record concludes with an experimental, beatless piece that conjures a twilight walk discovering fungi in the UK’s ancient woodland. Unfolding over 30 minutes, the six track mini-album sees Plant43 returning to the veteran electro label AC Records (this marks their 39th release) who present their catalogue in great style. Mycology 3 has a hand-stamped sleeve and comes in both black and a beautifully ethereal misty green, semi-transparent vinyl which reflects the mysterious atmosphere of the music and its mycological inspiration perfectly.

This @DarkScienceElectro label highlight is for legendary Dutch record label @Clone-nl - There is legitimately nothing that I could even say about the label that hasn't already been said about this 31-year-old mainstay. They have released some of the most important music in Electro music and their represses have made timeless music available to new generations of music lovers. We are forever indebted to Serge for all his hard work since starting the label in 1991. There cannot be a history of Electro without covering the major contributions of this Dutch imprint. Clone's impact reaches beyond just Electro music into Dub, Techno, IDM, House, and more. For the purposes of this mix, you could guess that my target was the more Electro-centric cuts from the discography.
