Born and raised in Aotearoa(New Zealand) Maatu embraced the sound of Electronic Vibes over 25 years ago and his taste is heavily influenced by the producers and Dj's of Europe. Maatu was exposed to electronic music when he went to a Album release back in the day from the Strom brothers Bart & Hayden back then called Antix, Fiord and now Out of Sorts and Label Beat&Path...This release was in the middle of this New Zealand native bush about 1-2 hrs Nth of Auckland, with this massive setup of trailers with speakers and DJ deck. It rained through the early hours of the morning and we just stripped and went for it stomping hard in the mud, Maatu recalls. Best thing about it I was with one of my brothers and a good close group of friends that I trust, will never forget it. Being able to travel parts of the world with his primary job, Maatu was given opportunities to play in some clubs in Europe. "It wasn't easy as I'm no famous DJ or well known by any means and to be honest I don't give a shit aye". So when I arrive in a new city in a new country I go for a walk or google clubs in the area. Maatu explains "Yea its a bit annoying to the people I guess but the only way for me is to hustle a little, like knocking on the doors or calling people and asking if they could let me play. It was kinda nerve racking as the expectation from these people was some what confusing while I was doing test or sound checks, I was busting out underground Tech House & Techno when they were kinda expecting Dub or Reggae after checking out out my Maori tattoos". Let's just say i freaked a few out, but fuck it was fun seeing the reaction on peoples faces. Maatu likes to create a journey for the people listening "take them on a ride take them where they want to be you know, away from the bullshit of everyday life and the shit that goes on in this beautiful world. Give the people a chance to express and be themselves "It's about the people and that matters a lot to me" Maatu expresses. Berlin is one of his favourites while playing in the warm tropical beaches in Bali, Indonesia where he resides. "It's crazy in Berlin, So many well established Dj's aye, its like a fuckin football league to find out who's at the top" The variety is mad as well and thats what makes Berlin unique along with other parts of Germany and Europe to mention.
