Ce chant devenu chant de tradition des troupes de montagne de l’armée allemande serait passé dans le répertoire français très rapidement via la Division Charlemagne (selon le site dédié) ou un peu plus tardivement selon d'autres sources, dans les années 50 avec les anciens soldats allemands intégrés à la Légion étrangère.
Il est logiquement interprété par les troupes de montagne.

Il ne s'agit pas d'une traduction mais d'une adaptation : les paroles originales font essentiellement référence à la femme aimée et la fleur edelweiss. La version française au contraire est essentiellement guerrière.
