Vashta Nerada [Doctor Who Theme] is our reworking of Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire's classic Doctor Who theme, featuring the vocals of the very lovely Harri Norris and recorded with producer George Shilling (of Bernard Butler, Blur, Porcupine Tree fame) at his Bank Cottage studio. Our very good friend and videographer Rich Wakefield of FX Media filmed the recording and produced the video.

We've always been massive fans of the original piece of music and after debating 'what if Pink Floyd actually covered the Doctor Who Theme' (rather than just the One of These Days... references to it), and having watched the brilliant clip of Peter Howell recreating his version at the BBC, decided we'd do our own take on it. Vashta Nerada was the result and hopefully we've done Ron and Delia's original track justice (with plenty of Floyd and Doctor Who references thrown in for good measure).

TRAFFiC EXPERiMENT are an independent rock band from the UK, combining elements of art rock, progressive rock, electronic, funk and acoustic with experimental soundscapes, instrumentals and sound effects to create their own brand of cinematic rock music.

Formed in 2006 by guitarist/vocalist/composer Stuart Chalmers, session drummer Tom Vincent and SjW frontman and bassist Simon James White, Traffic Experiment (named after a temporary road sign in the band’s hometown of Guildford) recorded their first full album, Blue Suburbia, a loose concept album based around the neuroses of modern British suburbia, at Woodworm Studios, a converted chapel in the rural Oxfordshire countryside and formerly the private studio of the legendary Fairport Convention.

Chalmers, an astrophysics graduate, had written and demoed the full album in 2005 and, having recruited Vincent and White (former students of the Academy of Contemporary Music and the London Music School respectively), set about recording what would prove to be a fairly complex 11-track album.

Blue Suburbia took Traffic Experiment four years to complete - a result of the band’s fiercely independent outlook by doing almost everything themselves, including designing the artwork, building websites, setting up their own label, producing and funding the project.

With its recurring musical and lyrical themes, accompanying visuals, extended soundscapes, and lack of any radio-friendly singles, Blue Suburbia was created as a work to be listened to in its entirety, with the band painstakingly layering their multiple parts and crafting each track so it would segue naturally into the next.

To add a further dimension, the album was peppered with sound effects from the ‘sped up sound of the Big Bang’, spinning clocks and guitars (which invovled band members twirling around in the studio wearing binaural ear mics), BBC Radio 4’s infamous pips through to a cheap monophonic ringtone of the main refrain opening Once More (with feeling).

The album also featured the soaring ambient vocals of Harri Norris, who was only seventeen when recording her parts

Produced by Stuart Chalmers, engineered by Steve Hill and mastered by Pink Floyd's Andy Jackson, Blue Suburbia was released in 2010 on the band's own self-titled label, Traffic Experiment Music.

Traffic Experiment returned to the studio in 2011 to work with producer George Shilling (Blur, Bernard Butler, Porcupine Tree, Stornoway), and created a reworking of the classic Doctor Who theme. Named after a flesh-eating shadow from the TV series, Vashta Nerada [Doctor Who Theme] was released on New Year’s Eve 2011. The band went on to release this version on limited edition vinyl to coincide with the sci-fi show’s 50th anniversary on November 23rd 2013, and also appeared live on BBC3’s Doctor Who Live Afterparty performing sections from the track to an audience of around 1.5 million.

On 21st December 2012, a date that had attracted many end-of-the-world prophecies, the band headed to Steve Winwood’s studio with a full 8-piece band to record and film a session of live tracks. The resulting film, Traffic Experiment - [Live at the End of the World], was released on Blu-ray and DVD, along with a release of Blue Suburbia [Special Edition], including the Blu-ray, on 21st June 2013.

Traffic Experiment are currently writing a follow-up album to 2010’s Blue Suburbia, preparing for some UK live shows (featuring Blue Suburbia in its entirety) in 2015 as well as working on a short-film project.
