“Chris Innasound, for a musician fairly early on in his career, already has releases on world-renowned labels. With tunes on Oris Jay’s Texture Records and the mighty Tempa, Chris has been quietly crafting some astounding material in Sheffield for a good few years now. We first started working with him around the time Allstars Volume 7 came out - and have kept close tabs on the producer since. We’re really, really excited to welcome him to the FKOF family and if FKOFd027 doesn’t help raise his stature we’re not quite sure what will.

“The four track EP opens with ‘It Is What It Is’. If there ever was a tune that characterised intent, this is it: it’s a massive roller with something for everyone. As to be expected, that intent continues across the rest of the release. ‘What You Need’ evokes near Nanobyte-levels of emotion, an audial adventure that expands and contracts with some serious beauty. ‘Re-Entry’ hits like a hammer with its weighty low-end, wicked sample usage and percussive implementation. FKOFd027 ends with ‘Between The Lines’ - all stripped back with its simple beats, bass and space recipe.

This is one of my favorite songs on the new album. I have listened to that 1st "drop" on loop approximately 18 zillion times; it reminds me of the sparkling melodic downtempo I fell so deeply in love with back in the day - exploring the side rooms & chill rooms with avant-garde sound-systems playing music from left field… or spiraling liquid abstract downtempo that would play during sunrise at a free outdoor full-moon celebration. Listening to this style of music was one of the 1st times I really registered in my mind that I was hearing an 808 bass, and it began a whole side-genre for me as a producer: using those drums to strengthen any other genre or sound. And who doesn't love a good vocoder… also a classic sound to my ears from the 1990s rave scene. This one says "We're reaching out to set you free" and it captures that healing energy of feeling rescued by friends (or angels) - this is one of the most important effects music has had on my life: making me feel healed.

This is the most symbolic song on the new record for me, even though it's instrumental. Like Timestretch, or Into the Sun, or Boomerang, it just feels like it's from that same place in the universe where these big soaring love songs live. But this song was an absolute pain in the ass to make because there were SO many different versions of it. There were various vocal versions, and completely different possible sequences, and insanely long extended versions, and at almost every point I felt paralyzed creatively because of all the various creative options. I would listen to the song on loop for hours and keep all the drums muted, and just mix it into a symphony of glittering sonic color, or mute all the melodies on the drop and just let it growl… I started bringing in sounds from other songs (Replenish, Ping Pong, Flashback, etc) and it was while working on this song that I dreamed up the concept for the album: celebrating music as a sonic collage, and surrendering to all the diverse micro-nuances and possibilities within the creative process.

This is just a silly outtake of me acting like a fool with one of my best friends in the universe, Craig. I was asking him to help me figure out if an idea I had for a bassline was out of key with an idea I had for a lead, and I was looped out and needed perspective. We ended up 'singing' the two parts (obviously neither of us are singers) and sure enough it worked out. Later after I finished the song Nostalgia Worship, I found that outtake, and mixed a bit of the song out of the session we were recording. Some weird sounds ensue…

I wrote this song a million years ago, it was my imagination's idea of something opening and expanding, like dawn… evolving from silence into the next phase. Those suction noises at the beginning made me think of creatures evolving out of the sea or something (not that that was 'the beginning' of time or anything) but I basically felt like the soul of this song is really old and simple. There is something dark and deep about the groove, but also hauntingly light and ethereal. I hope you enjoy this little slice of mind from way back in the day.

In case you haven't noticed, we love atmospheric, immersive bass music that feels alive and breathing, so we’re very excited to present today’s release: ‘Death Stroke’ by Nocturnal Status and Dillard. 

‘Death Stroke’ is a powerful example of bass music with substance and meaning, immediately establishing its tangible world of sound and setting the stage for the journey that’s about to ensue. We begin with a smooth, laid-back lounge atmosphere, evoking a sense of melancholy and longing that one would experience during a solo late night drive through a city. Subtle synth melodies arise and dissipate, almost echoing the effect that sirens would have as they travel through the caliginous night air, enhancing the feeling of desolation in one’s being. The song gradually builds, eventually morphing into a dark masterpiece with some of the most delicious, aggressive growls around.

This is the first time I am releasing an album as a physical product at the same time as a digital version. The second disc of the double CD set contains 13 additional tracks straight off the vinyl acetates that I composed and created in order to make legit sounding samples for A Color Map of The Sun.

Like always, the album is available in its entirety as a free download via prettylightsmusic.com. For the first time however, I encourage you to purchase a copy of the album. There are two honest reasons for this. The main reason is that as an artist I have always reinvested any success I have directly back into the music, the show and the art that goes along with it. Secondly, this isn't just an album; it is a massive collection of music beyond what is on the CDs that I will continue to put out after the album release. There is an insightful documentary film on the making of this project to be released alongside the launch of the album, as well as a music video for every song. They are all beautiful and uniquely unusual pieces of art.

This "album" is a multi-medium map of my mind and my self. It is personal and honest and I put everything into it. I have stayed on the path of being a completely independent musician and with the help of every supporter and friend, we have transformed a simple idea into a movement, a cultural beacon of light.
