The opening section of “Tome of Stars”, titled “Item 1: Anthesis”, comprises 21 poems that chronicle the emergence and flowering of a romantic relationship, structured around the botanical metaphor of anthesis, the period during which a flower blooms.

“Synesthesia” is the 10th song on the Anthesis music album and seeks to express the overwhelming, multisensory experience of encountering the beloved by abandoning conventional sensory language and instead layering cross-modal metaphors. The sonnet’s structure is one of escalating sensory substitution and confusion, reflecting both the poet’s own synesthetic tendencies and the inadequacy of language to fully capture perception. The poem oscillates between wonder and frustration, arriving finally at a single tangible image (the beloved’s hair), where the speaker concedes the limits of description but still attempts communion through breath and metaphor. The style is surreal, blending hallucinatory imagery with rhetorical questioning to enact the emotional and perceptual disorientation experienced.
