Join our host, Emily Bazalgette, on this brief journey of exploration, looking at the intersections of transformational governance, liberatory ways of working and disability justice. 

As part of the ongoing learning out loud work of the Transformational Governance Collective, this audio piece has been commissioned as a means of meditating on, and grappling with, some big questions and tensions in the emerging space of transformational governance. As we look towards more liberatory ways of working and being together, what can the 10 Principles of Disability Justice teach us about what it really means to be human in a time of multiple layers of crisis? How do we find hope along the way? 


Joining Emily in conversation are:

Jumoke Abdullahi - Co-founder of The Triple Cripples and Our Living Archives; writer, speaker, expert lecturer, researcher and consultant on the experiences of Black, disabled women and self-declared professional baby girl;

Kym Oliver - a writer, speaker, lecturer, sex and dating aficionado, vegan food critic and creator of Our Living Archives, an organisation focused on inter-communal healing and building a multi-dimensional archive that centres the existence and experiences of disabled Black women and gender expansive people;

Together Jumoke and Kym are the Triple Cripples, a platform dedicated to highlighting the narratives and increasing the visibility of disabled Black women and gender expansive people. 

Eman Bhatti - the impact lead at Spectra Art CIC, a creative collective that co-creates new spaces for neurodiverse and learning disabled people to make their voices heard through sharing their ideas, skills, talents and abilities; 

Anna Starkey - a multi-disciplinary creative practitioner, connecting ideas from art and science. Their work explores the potential energy of not knowing and shifting power through enabling collective curiosity and imagination. Also a member of the Transformational Governance Collective.


The Collective is a group of practitioners experimenting with more liberatory ways of working together, transformational ways of organising ourselves and interrogating questions of power, while supporting a growing network of practitioners grappling with similar questions across an emerging ecosystem.

The 10 Principles of Disability Justice were created by San Francisco-based movement building and performance project, Sins Invalid. 

Sins Invalid celebrates disabled people, and is centred and led by disabled, Black, Indigenous and people of Global Majority and queer, trans and non binary disabled people. 

The principles (in short) are:

1. Intersectionality
2. Leadership of those most impacted
3. Anti-capitalist politic
4. Commitment to cross-movement organising
5. Recognising wholeness
6. Sustainability
7. Commitment to cross-disability solidarity
8. Interdependence
9. Collective access
10. Collective liberation

‘How do we shift towards more liberatory ways of working together?’ | A TransGov Audio Project

Hello! We're the Transformational Governance Collective.

As part of a growing ecosystem of transformational governance practitioners, we want to contribute to an interconnected set of activities and experimental spaces that catalyse, deepen and sustain transformational governance practice.

We face a global polycrisis that requires innovative and socially just solutions. We can be in no doubt of the urgent need to do things differently. Imaginative, collaborative, liberatory practice must be enabled to flourish across disciplines and sectors - but is constrained and held back by inherited governance structures. The greatest risk lies in maintaining the status quo.

Governance encompasses all the things that are put in place for people to work together. The current, dominant models of governance were designed by and for patriarchal, white supremacist, colonial, capitalist institutions. They often work on the basis of separation, competition and control. Instead, we need to recognise and enhance interdependence, co-operation and systemic responses to complex problems.
