Siv Disa, the New York singer currently residing in Iceland shares the latest single from her forthcoming debut, Dreamhouse. “Whistle”, a gentle breakup song that was written in real time as the writer and singer came to terms with what letting go would bring to her.

“I wrote Whistle in the rehearsal space above the Williamsburg library, when I was in the city teaching piano. I struggled to make time to push my own music forward while keeping a full time job and would sometimes book practice space in between students. The room above the library there is a semi circle which gives it weird acoustics, and there’s an out of tune grand piano. I wrote this song when I was supposed to be practicing another song I think, but it was what was on my mind. 

It’s funny the way the meaning of the words I’m singing have carried different weights through the process of writing, recording, and releasing the song: it’s a breakup song I didn’t even realize was a breakup song until later. I remember writing it almost as a way to preview the pain of what letting go of this person would feel like. I’m not always in direct contact with my emotions, I’ve alway used songwriting to figure out how I feel. I wrote it in 30 minutes, sang it back and started bawling.

It felt like too much- too much to lose the person I was with. I remember crying and wanting to take back even the thought of losing them, as if saying it out loud at all had cursed me. When we recorded it a few months later I didn’t feel that terror anymore, it had been dulled by the cycle of argument and reconciliation that I think a lot of people fall into in their relationships. There was conviction that came with singing this same chorus again and still feeling the way I had all those months earlier in the library. In releasing it after the separation, I feel like the right choice was made for both of us. It wasn’t right to feel that way long term, and couldn’t really bring either of us happiness in a sustainable way. I really do wish both of us happiness in a sustainable way, wherever we can find it.”

‘Keytar (I Was Busy)’ is refreshingly perky, yet still grounded in a gritty synth-pop sound. The track is a moment of pure exhilarating pop joy hiding the darkest lyrical themes in the brightest of melodies (just like all the best pop music does). “I was busy trying to find myself, but there was no one else.” Like a slice of sunshine, the track wouldn’t be out of place on a The Pretenders album. Freeman’s voice has a magic quality. It’s incredibly toned, yet there are glimpses of fragility in there that makes the listening experience so unique.

The London-based band consists of front person Jemma Freeman, formerly of Bella Union’s Landshapes, plus bass player Mark Estall and drummer Hamilton Lee. After Freeman initially started the project solo, they found Mark and Hamilton and honed their psychedelic glam rock sound together. Hazy guitars and beguiling lyrics will guide your way through ‘Keytar (I Was Busy)’ by shining a light into a part of the psyche you may or may not know was there. Debut album ‘Oh Really, What’s That Then?’ is out on 18 October.

Following the success of lo-fi dream-pop single ‘Flowers’, Maija Sofia releases her debut album ‘Bath Time’ via Trapped Animal Records & Cargo Records and is out on 15th November 2019.

Sofia took inspiration from story-driven traditional folk ballads and shone them through the lens of a punk DIY ethos. The album name comes from the ritual of daily bathing, a whimsical place where most of the lyrics were written. 

Tracks on the album shine a light on the voices and stories of women throughout history, from Edie Sedgwick to Bridget Cleary, and the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church. The album was recorded by Chris Barry at Ailfionn Studio and features performances by Ronan Kealy (Junior Brother) and Niall Murphy (Oh Boland).

Sitar-driven indie mutineers Sunday Driver have released their new single ‘Time Machine’.

The Cambridge-based band return with their ensemble of rock, sitar, orchestral harp and clarinet, hot on the heels of earlier single ‘Mechanical Angel’ reaching over 1 million streams on Spotify.

The first track from upcoming album ‘Sun God’ explores the concepts of space and time with help from one of the pioneers of the British Bhangra sound, Kuljit Bhamra, on tabla.

On the evolution of Time Machine, lead singer Chandy Nath says, “The music came before the lyrics - the melodies and instrumental ideas had been kicking around in the band for years., and the way the song jumps around has always evoked movement and scene-shifting for me. One day I found a set of HG Wells novels in a charity shop, picked up the Time Machine and realised that was what the song was meant to be about!”

The backstory for the single and album focuses on two South Indian housewives who run away and rob a bank, but it ends up going wrong.

“The Time Machine provides them with a quick getaway – they end up in North America during the gold rush and make a fortune. It’s a sort of Thelma and Louise, but with a secret stash of chilli powder to spice up things up along the way. The album is a sort of classic ‘Spaghetti Eastern’ and this is the climax,” Chandy explains.


Time Machine is out on 24 July 2020 via Trapped Animal Records.
