Here we are at mix 100 of our series with an exclusive mix from none other than Chicago legend and founding father of the footwork genre, producer and DJ, RP Boo! The originator, the inspiration, and the cornerstone on which the entire genre has been built on.
    RP Boo started making tracks in 1995 inspired by the house music around him in Chicago. By bumping up the tempo of ghetto house he established a new template that lit a fire under an entire generation of dancers and producers. He created numerous unreleased tracks before experiencing his personal breakthrough with 1997's ‘Baby Come On’ – a composition many cite as the first Footwork track (find it on the Planet Mu's ‘Classics Vol 1’).
    RP Boo's essential first album, 2013's ‘Legacy’ caused a storm of acclaim worldwide as people finally started to piece together his true place in Footwork and the powerful legacy of his work as an innovator. In parallel with productions, his always on-point DJ sets have lit up festivals and clubs worldwide and continue to do so to this day, notably leading to him being named one of the ‘100 World’s Best DJs’ by DJ Mag.
    This Friday he releases  ‘Legacy Vol.2’ on Planet Mu, continuing his story. Featuring tracks created between 2002 and 2007, this is a wonderous selection of material, some known, some unknown.
    RP Boo continues to produce and tour around the world, spreading good vibes, and joy everywhere he lands. The enduring success of his music proving that there’s still no one quite like him. He is a living legend whose work has influenced us deeply. The collection of music we have chronicled would not exist with out him. We are so honored to be able to showcase a studio mix by one of our heroes! Get into the sound!

"Is artificial intelligence advancing too quickly?" 60 Minutes warns. "BuzzFeed CEO says AI may revolutionize media, fears possible 'dystopian' path," CBS News tells us. "TV and film writers are fighting to save their jobs from AI. They won't be the last," CNN reports.

Over and over, especially in recent months, we hear this line: AI is advancing so fast, growing so sophisticated, and becoming so transformative as to completely reshape the entire economy to say nothing of our shaky media landscape. In some cases, those in the press deem this a good thing; in others, a bad thing but in terms that get the problem all wrong. But virtually all media buy the basic line that something big and transformative isn’t just coming, but is in fact already here.

Obviously, we can't predict the future, but we can comment on the present. Yes, AI platforms can generate low-level marketing copy, pro forma emails, and shitty corporate art. But progress in these capacities does not, as such, portend a radical advancement into actual human intelligence and creativity.

Meanwhile, there’s little to no evidence to support the claim that AI, namely large language models like ChatGPT, actually can perform – or even intervene to save time performing – any type of high-level writing craft, journalism, fiction, screenwriting, and a host of “creative” production.

So why do we keep hearing otherwise? What purpose does this type of religious-like providential thinking serve? And who stands to benefit from the vague sense of a future of AI-written essays, articles, and scripts, no matter how terrible they may be?

In this episode, we explore media's current Inevitability Narrative, namely its credulous warning that ChatGPT is about to do the work of media and entertainment professionals, examining the ways in which this narrative, despite the evidence to the contrary, serves as a constant, implicit threat to workers and a convenient pretext for labor abuses like wage reduction, layoffs, and union-busting. We also review how this media hype works to obscure the very real, banal harms of AI, such as racism, surveillance, over policing and lack of accountability for the powerful.

Our guest is Rutgers professor Dr. Lauren M.E. Goodlad.

About the mix: "My first monumental experiences with house music were on an underground dancefloor in the mid- late 90's. Dancing was the way I connected with like minded people and the dancefloor was where I was able to process a lot of trauma. That style of 90s house, always with the inclusion of a break-beat, often mixed with techno was what taught me how to move my body as a form of expression and communication. In those days the DJ was never the focal point, and dance moves were like a language that we all learned from each other and passed on, everyone developing their own dialect or style. It was both a liberating and bonding experience. As House has evolved through its many influences over the years, the spaces it’s been able to hold for queer and marginalized communities is what makes it so special. Music is the glue......This mix explores late 80's acid, along with favorites from the mid 90's and more current productions that have peaked my interest or fit the vibe."
