Notes:

Seren's Chronicle Key has a lot of sympathy for Mir, feeling guilty that all that can be done for her is keep her sealed away and wishing there was more that she could do. Because of that, I wanted to echo the bird image that comes up in Harmonius and a few other Mir/Jacqli songs to show Seren trying to be in sync with Mir's feelings.

What exactly happened when Seren took up her role as the star singer, or how long it lasted, I won't say. But maybe the feelings contained in the song may give you some idea.

Feelings contained within the song:

In the mountains, a long time ago, there was a town that lived in fear of the demon queen in the mountains. It was said the demon queen was a power witch, full of hatred for the people, and if she was ever allowed to escape from the caverns carved into the mountains and come back to the village, it would bring great disaster to all.

To prevent this, a line of priestesses had risen, each dedicated to finding a way the demon queen could be sealed away for ever. These holy maidens were raised from birth to defeat the demon queen and hold her back from leaving her cave, and they too had powerful magic to do it. However, strong as they were, not one returned until another had been sent to replace them, and some did not come back at all. Those that did return dedicated the rest of their lives to discovering more magic that could help the holy maidens sent into the cavern.

It came to pass that one year, the chosen holy maiden was a little different to her predecessors. She was a sensitive girl, more in tune than most with the flow of magic and the songs of the world. Her heart was also a little heavier at leaving her village—the friends, the family and the lover she would have to leave behind. The boy she loved begged her not to leave him, and she longed to stay, but her duty was her duty: she was the only one that could protect him from the demon queen, after all.

The maiden was a little afraid to enter the cave. She did not think she was as strong as those who had gone before her— what could a little girl like her do against a great and frightening demon queen? But she steeled her heart and went in anyway. Inside, she found the demon queen. The witch was restrained in crumbling chains of magic, that fell apart even as the maiden watched.  She was small and frail, but the maiden could feel a huge and frightening power to her. As she was freed, the stone splintered and cracked beneath her feet, and when she screamed at the maiden to get out, it felt as if the very air was being torn apart.

But the maiden had been training all her life and she held her ground. Somewhere in that voice she heard something more than rage and malice. She looked closer and could see that around the witches heart was another chain of thorns, a curse wound tightly around until nothing else could pass it. But somewhere inside… somewhere inside there was a girl like her. She had been changed and broken by her curse, but one they had been the same.

And if inside, they were the same… why should it have to end like this?

"Wait, I don't want to fight you, there is something wrong! There has to be another way…" The holy maiden cried, but the demon queen attacked anyway.

"I don't believe you! You are all the same, you sent me here, you chained me up, you send your people to lock me away. I hate you!"

Even through the queen's magic hurt her deeply, the girl fell to her knees and began a song of healing, trying to unravel the thorns around the witches heart. She could catch glimpses of the girl that the demon queen once was, a girl full of hope and light and love. And… loss. That girl was caged in darkness she couldn't escape. Instead, there was pain, and sadness. Betrayal and confusion. Disappointment and a longing for something, anything else.

But the curse was too powerful, it had kept the witch as its demon queen for so long, it refused to give her up to hope so easily. The witch screamed again when her vulnerabilities were laid bare and seized the girl, the thorns of her heart choking away the healing. 

The maiden knew then that she was not strong enough. She couldn't heal the curse. The thought cut her more deeply than the thorns, more deeply than the demon queen's claws around her throat. But she had heard that tiny, desperate wish for escape, and there was one other thing she could do.

She pulled the demon queen close and began her last spell. A song that would turn them both to dreaming crystal. If she could not heal the curse, at the least she could stop the pain. In white hot rage the demon queen fought every moment, not understanding the maiden's wishes. But the holy maiden's wish was pure and so her magic was impossible to resist.

She could not reach the Demon Queen... but she had tried, and that was all that mattered.
She could not heal her pain... but she had stopped her suffering, and that was all that mattered.
The demon queen would never know someone accepted her, cared for her… but someone did care, and that was all that mattered.

The legacy of the cruelty we inflict on others outlives us. But so does every wish for another's happiness. In the face of overwhelming tragedy, what light and love we can give, is the only thing we have.
