Melbourne-based Emily McAuliffe has been plenty of places in her travel writing career, but she reckons a little island off the island of Tasmania – which is of course an island off the coast of the Australia, itself an island 	continent –  anyway Emily reckons Bruny Island is one of her most favourite destinations.  At 362-square-kilometres (140 sq mi) it is larger than it looks and Emily says there is plenty to see and do there. She loves the low-key life and the fact there are no major hotels, no mega-brands, but enough to make her want to spent four nights there as she explains to Graeme Kemlo

As a newspaper reporter in the 1970s here in Melbourne, Alistair Smith was well aware of the scare that gripped Perth in Western Australia when it was announced by NASA that their Skylab space platform on returning to earth was likely to crash into the city.  That did not happen, but it came relatively close and crashed further east into the West Australian bush.  Like a good newshound, years later Alistair followed up to find out where it crashed and whether there was any debris -  - he found it and more in Balladonia, a little town that even got an apologetic phone call from President Jimmy Carter.

This week’s photo is of a quirky set-up on little Bruny Island, which is off the coast of Tasmania in Australia. As you drive along Bruny Island Main Road on the south island, you’ll see a few signs saying ‘bread’ to alert you to the ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ ‘bread store’ up ahead – and I say ‘bread store’ in inverted commas. Because this store is nothing but two rusted, retro fridges by the side of a paddock. You pull off the main road onto a dirt road, and when you open the fridge you’ll find fresh sourdough and other baked goods in the fridges, which aren’t turned on of course, given they’re parked under a tree. You can purchase bread via an honesty system- drop your cash in the box or make a transfer to the bank account scratched on brown paper inside the door. The fridges are stocked daily – or sometimes multiple times a day given their popularity - by local baker John Bullock, who has created quite a buzz with his novel idea. These fridges have become a Bruny Island icon, and as you can imagine, are a big hit on Instagram.

A  few weeks back we spoke with our man in New York, Aussie Phil Brown, who said he felt New Yorkers were resigned to the fact that they probably had to put up with Donald Trump as president for the remainder of his term.   He is firing public servants who disagree with him, he has the numbers in congress. He is challenging laws, some might say creating new rules as he goes, and also his appointees at the ultimate decision-making Supreme Court.  But far from 'resigned',  Kris sees things a little differently  and believes the people are certainly not taking this laying down - – we  drill down and hear her  perspective from in the American heartland where protests are plenty.

This is a cauitionary tale about searching for the official Indonesia Government visa service and being greeted by "Welcome To Indonesia - Indonesia Visa Online" Except it was a message from 16,577 kilometres away in the USA and they charged me four times the usual fee and have not responded to my reauests to cancel the transaction  because I felt scammed.
Don't make my costly mistake - go to https://www.smartraveller.gov.au then look on the site for Travel and it will take you to visa links for government sites around the world. 

Image is screen grab from my Google search - at the top is what I entered and the top result led me not to Bali, but faraway USA.  When I checked later that day Indonesia;s official government visa site was listed at number 12 by Google.  Don;t get sucked in as I was by the lie in bold text.
