Soul Deep's relationship with Treex develops momentum once again. "Troubled Minds" is a quintessential example of sample magic as a dusty slice of soul is cuddled and wrapped by a wonderfully warm smouldering groove. Complementing the heat, "Solstice" strips away a few layers and reveals a more naked beauty; skippy drums, spacious horns and a slower introduction to each element allows Treex to gradually build a unique dynamic that captures the imagination from the off, and never lets it go. Liquid bliss.

There's a definite hint of the past with Treex's latest release, and that's never a bad start. "Jazz Cat" is as beboppy as you'd expect but that bassline is far too infectious to pigeonhole that way. Rolling out smooth and lush, it's a progressive little number that grows and grows. For more beefy beats, "Precious Moment" fits the bill, adding a choice bassline to junglist breaks to create a thunderous dancefloor filler. "Epic Vision" is a deep and dramatic but soulful addition, a perfect dark roller. Finally "Reversed Day" flirts with pitch and time shifting to create a soaring and beautiful track perfect for headphone listening. With all these styles rolled into one, this has got to be the bargain EP of the year best suited for a basement.

Ah, la drum and bass Parisienne. C'est tres sophistique. "Funk Mirror" is the type of rolling track that takes you back to your early days of drum and bass, whenever they were. Taking flavours of the old school as well as the choice years of 2007 through 2011 (such good years for fresh rollers wouldn't you agree?) it's a perfect tune no matter your 170bpm persuasion.

Soul Deep were one of the first labels to really recognise and nurture this as far back as 2013... And the relationship is still going strong with this delicious three-tracker. "Deep Note" is an amen-addled roller with warm filtered chords fluctuating subtly. "Can't Go Home" rides a cosmic arpeggio and Utah Jazz-style vocal sample bareback while "Pushin' On" is a jazzy roller that takes us back to the early 2000s when Hospital Records rewrote the rulebook. Treex returns to Soul Deep for another funked up, Liquid extravaganza. The EP kicks off with the title track, "Melancholy Man," which features snappy drums, soft pads, rolling sub, uplifting strings, and an energetic mid-range bassline layer that adds the right amount of grit to the tune. 

Next up is "Funked Up," in which Treex takes a very funky approach to writing a dancefloor filler. The song starts out with a shrieking classic funk sample, layered with funky guitar riffs, and popping drums. When the drop hits, the funky backdrop is layered with an Amen loop, which adds energy to the drums, and a busy bassline that plucks along underneath the groove. The vocalists sing out the word, "Funkdafied," which is a great description of what the listener is hearing. "Craving," is up next and features an intoxicating guitar loop, snappy drums, echoing whispering vocals, deep sub bassline, and an aggressive mid bassline that adds a sense of urgency to the tune. 

The EP is rounded out by the flavors of "Tremble," which is highlighted by a looping synth line, soft Rhodes chords, harmonic Rhodes stabs, groovy drums, and a rolling sub bassline. Overall, this is a wonderful, funked up composition from the French producer, Treex. Rolling!!

The EP kicks off with the title track, “Back In Jazz,” which features funky guitar licks, chunky drums, chirping piano keys, and a masterful bassline that fits the groove like a glove. The next track, “Miss Lovegood,” takes over with its punchy drums, airy keys, tasteful vocals, deep sub bassline, and a midrange Reese style bassline that helps give the song the perfect amount of grit. “Drifterz,” is up next and is highlighted by its snapping drums, deep sub, and trance-style, floating keys that transports the track to a different dimension. Autumn-Mix (Liquid/Rollin DNB)

★  Born 1984, Dj & Producer from Paris now based in Lille (Fr). Brice aka Treex is involved into Drum & Bass scene for over a decade, organizing events and appearing in several french night-clubs.

After mixing and experimenting with the dark side of DNB in french raves, he's started to produce Liquid Drum & Bass in 2011 cause he felt at ease with this genre as he could mix all his musical influences together. From US Soul to 70's Funk & Jazz and also a touch of hip-hop! 

Since then he has released tracks on several labels starting with Totaal Rez records (FR) then Liquid Tones and now some of the most important liquid-dnb labels like Soul Deep (his home-label since 2013), Offworld (2019) and Smooth-n-Groove (2023).  He was also behind the 'LIQUIDZ-SPIRIT' Partys and Podcasts helping the liquid-dnb scene growing in France (2016 to 2022).

★ Bio (French) : Né en 1984, originaire de Paris/77 et maintenant installé à Lille, Brice aka Treex est présent sur la scène Drum & Bass depuis plus de 15 ans. On l’a aperçu au coté de nombreux crews comme Amplitude (77), EN2, Exploration, Forever DNB, Kosmo et DNB France.

Au départ influencé par la techno et les ambiances froides et industrielles du neurofunk qu'il mixait en free-party, il se met à la production en 2011 et choisit plutôt la Liquid DNB pour s’exprimer. Il peut ainsi piocher dans sa culture musicale sans borne entre Soul, Funk 70's et Hip-Hop!

Depuis il a sortit une quinzaine d'EPs sur différents labels, à commencer par Totaal Rez pour ensuite enchainer plusieurs sorties remarquées par quelques grands noms de la DNB comme LTJ Bukem, John B, Intelligent Manners ou encore Technimatic. Soul Deep est son label de prédilection depuis 2013, une évolution musicale bien méritée qui s'est confirmée avec la sortie d'un EP sur Offworld (2019) et Smooth-n-Groove(2023) ainsi que 4 morceaux sur les compils 'French-Plates' de DNB France.

Il est aussi à l'origine des events 'LIQUIDZ SPIRIT' (actif à Paris de 2016 à 2022) qui visaient à faire connaitre la Liquid-Dnb à un plus grand nombre, au coté de ses compères Mossa, Induktiv et H.A.X.
