SCOOPS Records announce a brand new release and a brand new collaboration. Back in the dark days of lockdown Steve Vibronics joined forces with Ashanti Selah (son of Sound System legend Aba Shanti) to cook up some fresh musical flavours aimed at brightening up our lives .... and this release is the first dish served in what will be a series of Vibronics meets Ashanti Selah productions.

The Hustle Riddim is an up-beat and sub-shaking dubwise blast that (as with most SCOOPS Records releases!) is mixed for the Sound System. The flip-side features a full on phaser attacking dub mix .. fresh from the Vibronics Dub Cupboard Studio in Leicester where old-skool analogue dub techniques are still strictly adhered to.

After a little break while the world got turned upside down, Mow Records returns with its fourth release. Kicking off with a run of three amazing albums, Mow presents a various artists EP with Mowgan Ghenassia collaborating with four vibrant performers, each of whom brings their own distinct style to the release. 

Mama Africa was recorded in total reverence to the motherland, paying respect to its spirit through soulful and heartfelt recordings that tap into the continent’s lineage. Mowgan formed friendships with each of the artists featured, finding a strong connection with all four of them, which fed into their highly creative studio sessions.

The compilation features seven brand new cuts, including a solo track from Mowgan himself, plus collaborations with each of the four artists. Beginning with the title track ‘Mama Africa’. On this song Chanana talks about wars that he would like to stop. Asking the young people of Africa to wake up and train their consciousness on what’s going on all around their nation. Brother and sisters living in poverty, alcoholics, junkies, violence... Mama Africa your children cry, Mama Africa your women die, Mama Africa I fear for the blessing (Bless Mama Africa). A sultry groove supports Chanana’s authoritative vocals, with organic percussion and emotive instrumentation, which increases in intensity as the song progresses, with a moment of contemplation close to the end.

‘Sambé Sambé’ talks about the independence of African every year. People are saying ‘Same same’ to wish for it but sadly Africa is not really independent… This one has a traditional African rhythm and atmosphere, upbeat yet infused with a sense of melancholy. Mamadou’s vocals in particular have a subtle air of longing.

Près de 7 ans après avoir lancé ses mythiques sélections mensuelles roots et dub, Musical Echoes propose désormais une nouvelle série de mixes : les 100% dubplates selections ! Au menu, que des dubplates au sens large : sur vinyles en série limitée, des vinyles ou acétates gravés ou encore des morceaux exclusifs sur tous les formats. Après le premier mix assuré par Max General de Roots Skankers (écoutez ici), c'est Weeda Jah Militant qui se charge du deuxième volet pour 87 minutes de rares trésors musicaux ! La tracklist reste exceptionnellement non renseignée, mais vous avez le droit de nous donner les titres que vous reconnaissez en commentaire de cette publication sur ce site (exemple : 27"40 : Junior Delgado : "Famine"...). Musical Echoes 100% dubplates selection #2 by Weeda / Jah Militant sound system

After years of studiously compiling playlists for friends, and, more recently, taking the first amateur steps towards stringing whole sets together, I was entrusted by two dear friends to share some of my favourite tracks on the last night of an unforgettable trip to the Quaggafontein desert. 

It was my first night playing in front of strangers (although most of the strangers had become friends by then).

What I put together is a collection of melodic, texturally interesting, high-energy beats, suited to an endless, purple-hued desert sky and a small crowd of friendly faces.

It gave me tremendous joy to try my (only) hand at this. I hope you like it too.

David aka Benzine, jeune artiste de 20 ans, pas très à l’aise avec l’outil informatique, il compose en dawless (sans logiciel), à l’aide de samplers, synthés et pédales d’effet. Cette manière de produire lui tient à cœur car elle permet de se rapprocher au maximum de la magie d’un son joué en live.

Parmi les nombreux styles qui l’inspirent, le dub s’est imposé comme le plus adapté à l’univers qu'il essaie de créer. Cela n’empêche pas quelques déviances. 

Il vous présente son premier EP : « Oasis ». 
Un voyage ambiant, orientale et aquatique.

This mix is from one of my favorite pool party sets this summer. Electric Luau. It’s 3 &1/2 hours of groovy, funky house music vibes. Hope you enjoy.

Having released his debut album Around The Corner in 2018, as well as a critically acclaimed LP in collaboration with Los Angeles-based musician Tristan de Liège two years later, Keno aka David Hanke’s latest opus, Out Past The Current, brings together not only some of his finest remixes from the past four years but also a handful of new and exclusive works.

Once again Hanke's love for more downtempo styles is on show - a passion that has immersed the producer into the electronic music scene since the early 2000s. Developing his own style over the last few years with lush instrumentations, more complex songwriting and distinctive drum programming, his songs and remixes ease the mind with echoes from the past.

What better way to start then, than with a never before heard recording from Keno, appropriately entitled Outset. Something of a statement of intent, this new piece establishes the producer’s trademark strings only to let loose with an intense 45 second drum workout that’ll leave the listener in a spin and hungry for more.

And more comes in the shape of a remix for Berlin producer, composer and arranger Niko Schabel aka Radio Citizen who has been releasing music for the last 15 years, and currently with his hometown label, Sonar Kollektiv. Serene, in it's original form, was featured on the 2017 album Silent Guide, and was a suitably contemplative and laid-back piece of instrumental music. Keno’s reworking adds more of a groove and tightens up the freeform nature of the original without losing any of its easygoing charm.

MDBTS (RAVE DREAMING) Vol.4

Fela Kuti is one of my all-time favorite artist, both for his immense musical legacy, but also for his humanist political message. 

Here is a rework I dared to make of one of his last song, O.D.O.O. (overtake don't overtake overtake), released in 1989.

As much as I love the intense groove emanating from this almost 32mn-long track, I also find it particularly interesting as it's a kind of condensed summary of Fela's decades-long political fight. 

In this song he references in a kind of endless mashup some of his most famous tracks like "Zombie", "Shuffering and Shmiling", "Kalakuta Show" or "Unknown Soldier", to once again denounce the fake post-war emancipations of many African countries from colonies to military-led regimes pretending to be democracies.  

Hope you'll enjoy this condensed housy take, but whether you do or not, I guarantee you should take 32 minutes of your time to dig into the timeless original if you're not familiar with It already.
