Biologists Rok Šturm & Juan López (National Institute of Biology Slovenia) on the vibrational communication of insects, recorded with lasers in the Old Botanical Garden in Zurich, Switzerland.

The project "Sonic Topologies" unfold the sounds of diverse sites in Zurich—a botanical garden, a swimming pool, a water reservoir and a lake shore. In a festival during June 2022, artists, scientists and architects developed site-specific concerts, talks and workshops that reveal hidden, overlooked and speculative sounds in the urban landscape. http://www.sonictopologies.com

Obalni Travnik / Coastal meadow

Continuous recording of the vibroscape of a grass blade in Ljubljana's bog. Substrate-borne vibrations recorded with laser doppler vibrometer. Frequencies below 50 Hz (wind noise) and above 2500 Hz have been cut as no biological signals were found in that range. Most of the vibrations we hear are emitted by mainly three local insects:
-Aphrodes makarovi
-Aphrodes bicincta (var. "Dragonja")
-Anoscopus serratulae

Vibroscape of a grass blade

Composition made for the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2023, together with an interview for Radio Utopia, News from the world (French Pavilion).
The insect vibrational signals we can hear were recorded in different parts of Slovenia during the summers of 2020-2023 and show a fraction of the rich diversity of sounds that emanate from different meadow vibroscapes.

Most of what you can hear here are substrate-borne vibrations travelling through plants. Every different sound is a unique insect species communicating this way. Vibrations recorded with laser doppler vibrometers.
