This was huge fun!! At the Kutscherhof i played a dj-set that was only audible through wireless headphones. I fucked up some of the blending, because it was really unfamiliar to me to mix only on headphones without any monitoring or roomsound. Friendly people at Lovelab, David, Julian and Olivier, thanks for inviting me. I really enjoyed this night!!!

In this mix you'll find a lil 4am yoga-intro, followed by some 80s-dubs and then I continued playing my favorite 808-monsters old and new. In the end i pulled the bpm-brake and kicked ass with some mid-tempo oldschool-rap-jams.

... The photo was shot the same day by my man First Claas while locking up my Freizeitrad right before our 2-euro-digging trip to Wohlwillstraßenfest ... What is seriously the best place to buy records in Hamburg when you like yard-sales!!!

Ninety minutes of superbly mixed deep house from a student of sound.

Releases from Benedikt Frey under his given name are a relatively new occurence, with the young German's production path commencing under the Suedmilch banner at the turn of the decade with an initial focus on a sound grounded in minimal and dub techno. As Frey's tastes and production chops matured, his output has gravitated towards a house shaped tempo, first under the name Venedikt Reyf and eventually under his proper name with releases on Ethereal Sound, Mule Musiq and Live At Robert Johnson.

Benedikt Frey's arrival on the latter label has coincided with a relocation to Frankfurt Am Maim where he's currently studying, and given the city's heritage the producer is well placed to further develop his interest in the deep house sound. Having debuted on LARJ last year with the well-judged Running In Circles 12", Frey's alliance with the label and club has continued with an appearance on their compilation Lifesaver as well as several DJ slots at Robert Johnson (most recently alongside Ben Klock) with further material promised.

There's a lack of online coverage out there on Benedikt's output to date that tallies up with his unassuming nature; corresponding with the producer for the purpose of this mix, we got the sense Frey prefers to let people discover his music for themselves. Hopefully Benedikt's hugely impressive mix of records old and new will encourage more people to investigate his own productions, be it his solo releases for the aforementioned high profile labels, or the material he has issued on his own Love Pain Sunshine & Rain label, or the collaborative work done with Locoto as v-to-the-d. "I Woke Up In The Middle Of Nowhere" is the title of this soundtrack mixed by X – our friend and man from the french Riviera. He is constantly searching for new sounds and musical spheres between Tibetian Folklore, Texas Rap, Polish Jazz or Goth bands from Los Angeles. Amin Payne has built a serious reputation as both prolific producer and unmissable live performer since moving to Australia to further his music career from New Zealand. Amin spent years experimenting with sampling what ever he could find, including cassette tapes and DVDs, whilst his music was shaped by his love for records and his ever growing collection. Having defined his own unique sound, Amin now mixes the soulful influences of his hometown in Auckland and the experimental beats of Melbourne’s electronic scene that he has found himself a prominent part of. With his blend of soulful music with forward-thinking sensibilities, Amin’s talent has not gone unnoticed, and after his first release 2011’s ‘Gill Scott Heron Tribute’, he was asked to perform as part of Red Bull Music Academy’s Beat Suite, alongside a fifteen-piece orchestra, notable local beat makers, turntablists and Aloe Blacc and Ladi 6 to a sold-out crowd in Melbourne’s Recital Hall.

Having studied Sound and Audio Engineering at SAE College, Amin’s inspiration comes from a life-time spent as a constant crate digger with influences as varied as J-Dilla, Pete Rock, Kashif, Earth Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson. “Because my music is mostly instrumental I have the freedom to explore and infuse different genres and add a modern feel to it. My current sound is very hip-hop, future funk and future beat, but I’ve even made a deep house track and used World Music samples for my new album. I mean, why not? I’m trying everything I can to challenge myself and keep things fresh but consistent at the same time,” says Amin.

A vital member of the Operatives, Amin is also the co-founder of Condensed Milk, a collective & label that is renown for drawing a crowd for it’s parties, talent showcases and DJ sets across Melbourne and releasing several acclaimed compilations of local and International artists.

With a sound that has drawn fans from across the globe, his live set’s are unmatched by few Australian producers. Incorporating live beats, his distinguished record collection and remixes; he uses drum machines and turntables as well as live instrumentation, which has furthered his reputation as an exceptional performer as well as a talented producer.

Thanks to the success of his live shows and unstoppable music, Amin has shared stages with Aloe Blacc, Ladi6, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Peanut Butter Wolf, Eric Lau, Hudson Mohawke, Kev Brown, Oddisee, Suff Daddy, Ras G, Melo-X, Julien Dyne, Hiatus Kaiyote,@ Peace, and Katchafire.

Credit 00 is the alias of Alexander Dorn, a staple of the excellent Dresden imprint Uncanny Valley. His unique synth-heavy productions betray a love for synthesizers and drum machines, and have invited comparisons to the sinewy textures of Legowelt.

Announcing himself with the analogue roughness of his The Living Room Life EP in 2012, he followed up with Ice Cream a year later, similarly robust in its mechanical house grooves.

His distinct brand of machine music shines through in his Pelski Podcast: an hour's journey of resolutely brittle analogue beats.

In anticipation of the release of his debut full-length album Breakthrough, the Gaslamp Killer offers a taste of the ominous urgency that infiltrates his sound with “Flange Face / Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun.”

“Flange Face (with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson)” rattles into being from a scratchy dissonance and soon descends into a distorted, doom-filled drama. Twisted with tension and hemmed in by a smack of solemn strings, the track operates on a frequency of pure horror. “Flange Face (Low End Theory Edit)” takes it to the club, a bass-heavy gut puncher stripped down to the beats.

With loose drums and a rash of razor-covered synths, “Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun (with Dimlite)” unsettles into a bath of cold shudders. Inky shadows lurk just beneath the surface, dark reflections of the monsters that are strung between the beats.

Suggestively sinister, the Gaslamp Killer’s latest release is a glimpse of the artist’s contorted sonic landscape, a frightening world of chattering evil and chills that bite into the spine.

Sorry for the small hiatus in our mix series. We relocated HQ recently but now have something special for you ... One of Italy's best kept secrets is a club located in Brescia called Disco Volante. Well known by visiting DJs to have one of the best DJ booths in Europe (Bozak mixer with dedicated isolators on each channel is rare these days!), we thought it only right that Enio (one of the masterminds behind the club) presented one of our podcasts. I've been a music lover since day one! As a kid with my small turntable I used to listen endlessly to all the records in my brothers and sisters' collection. In the early 80's I started to go to some alternative clubs located in Northern Italy. I am talking about "Cosmic" and "Typhoon". There I heard djs playing all kinds of music, from Jazz to Disco, to Afro and Funk till the modern electronic music from the 70's and 80's. It was only at the end of the 80's / early 90's that I started to dig house music. But it was a slow process. I have never loved glamourous and fake clubs. I loved the stuff coming from Chicago and Detroit since I could immediately find my vibe and roots in it, even if I was born and raised in Italy. Since the 90's I have been a promoter and dj for many projects mainly in and around Brescia. Today I am one of the founders, djs, director and owners of DISCO VOLANTE, in Brescia. In my dj sets you can feel my deep love for black music. I love analog sounds and I LOVE VINYL.
