Continuing the series of reissues from the Tresor catalogue, Tresor Records announces an updated version of the classic Regis and Female long-player, Againstnature.

Originally released in the year 2000, the album represents a pivotal moment in the emergence of the “Birmingham Sound”; a stripped-back sub-genre of Techno, pioneered around this time in the English hub by artists such as Regis, Female, and Surgeon. 
Influenced more by Industrial, Music Concrete, and EBM than from the melodic sounds of its Detroit predecessor, Regis later described the music as being made with a fractured pop sensibility which created a sound that may be faceless but by design loses none of the soul of its American counterpart.

Nowhere is this sonic changing of the guard more apparent than in opening track, Washing My Hands, which sets the stage with a vignette of field recordings: arc welders, water boilers and other sounds reminiscent of industrial workshops reframe your senses, placing your mind into a familiar yet unsettling dreamlike space. From this soundscape emerges a high-pitched, vitreous noise heralding the jarring introduction of Let Them Bleed, the first of several trance-inducing tracks on the album such as Join Us In Paradise, and Guiltless, which layer percussive and sampled loops creating what Peter Sutton (aka Female) described as exotic hypnotics.

This remastered edition of Againstnature also features the additional track, Theme From Streetwalker, previously only available on Volume 6 of the Tresor Compilation series. Collected together the album is a key work in the progression of this sub-genre to the dominant form of Techno heard in clubs in Berlin and around the world today.

The unassuming maestro of techno music Donato Dozzy returns to Tresor Records on its 30th year with a new EP entitled 124. The record follows a majestic appearance on the Tresor 30 anniversary compilation and his expert devotion to the Roland TB-303, Filo Loves The Acid. True to form, 124 meddles sharp rhythmic minimalism and diverse textures, each track pushing at the epiphanic threshold as the boss of Spazio Disponibile allows his deeply intuitive productions to take effect.

"messy kafka world" introduces a frenetic and concentrated atmosphere of rhythmic forces, hallucinatory and euphoric in effect. Its dizzying staccato loops are given structure by strengthening beats and bleak synthetic pillars. "synthi chase" emits radical powers, as buzzing rhythms and monotone synths make raw gestures towards altered states. It shares a kindred spirit with "cassiopeia 36", seen in particular through its determined and primitive pulses, nested within wobbling wood percussion and nervous synth repetitions. "wooden dolls don’t cry" stamps a warm groove, its tempered percussion taking centre stage as shimmering melodic loops threaten spiralling feedback. These dark, hypnotic tracks are flawlessly programmed to cast mesmeric momentums onto club floors and into loosened limbs.

Tresor veteran TV Victor returns with two EPs in the midst of Tresor's 30th anniversary. Being an integral part of Tresor even before it all began, Udo Heitfeld founded No Zen Orchestra in 1987 together with Dimitri Hegemann, Günther Schickert and Piers Headley. The first releases on Interfisch, which would later become Tresor Records, saw the crew gathering around Fischbüro (a space for eclectic and dada experimentation) releasing non-comforming hypnotic psychedelic rock experiments, followed by Heitfeld’s solo debut Album Moondance on Big Sex in ‘89 as well as Trance Garden 1-3, his first release on Tresor in ’94. 

TV Victor's new releases GRV Vol. 2 + 3 continue this saga three decades later. This new chapter picks up where GRV Vol.1 left off in 2010, with its release on Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer's Non Standard Productions label. The sound harkens back to classic downbeat, trip hop and tape loop workouts of the early days. Crystal plateaus float in unison with the pulsating grooves, just like the ebb and flow of the tide, the shifting sand and the lively sea coincide. Even when the waters seem resting at times, the interlocking rhythms move far below their surface. You can't stop these waves, but you can learn how to flow. 

These four tracks show TV Victor at what he does best: major effects with minor changes, micro-timed steps in the grooves, macro-steps in cognition. This is dance music for the mind - an awakening from another world.

Tresor welcomes Israel Vines to the family. 

Bred in the 90's U.S. Midwest party scene, Israel Vines has since carved out a singular space in the American underground as a DJ, remixer, and producer. In 2015, he joined forces with Detroit's legendary Interdimensional Transmissions crew to showcase his post-techno excursions on their sublabel Eye Teeth, on which his debut album, "And Now We Know Nothing", was released in 2020 following a string of highly rated 12" EPs. 

"Voices", a six track EP delivered for Tresor, sees Vines approaching his finest form. Misty, breathtaking atmospheres and distorted vocals waft like murmuring ghosts across concrete floors, trailed by columns of light and beings from another realm. Broken kicks, halftime snares, outer-world synthetic tones and interlocking bass-heavy polyrhythms abound, combining to create a boundary-pushing take on the techno blueprint. 

This is futurist energy commingled with raw, unrestrained spirit – honest, pure and intense. 

This release is dedicated with love to the memory of Greg Mudge (1974-2021) - Community leader, restaurateur, inspiration, dear friend to many, and a pillar of the Detroit Techno scene for nearly three decades.

Israel Vines - Voices EP (Tresor.342)

Drawing inspiration from science fiction, Black liberation, and the sounds of Detroit, Huey Mnemonic designs a sound that expands Black consciousness and pushes back against the whitewashing in dance music. The Motor City-based producer and sometimes DJ takes his name from Huey P. Newton and the 1995 cyberpunk film Johnny Mnemonic, a cult classic portraying a dystopian future controlled by mega-corporations. Mnemonic recently launched his Subsonic Ebonics label with the Virtuosity EP.

Preluding the Tresor 30 compilation, Huey Mnemonic composes "Transmutation" a glistening and high-spirited shuffling dance-floor rhythm track, on which the Talking Drum meets TR-909 patterns, creating an instrumental bridge between West Africa and Detroit. With "Transmutation", Huey Mnemonic demonstrates that he is undoubtedly at the forefront of a new generation of Detroit techno producers.

In the last 20 years Donato Dozzy has established himself as one of the most important producers and is known in the international club scene for his distinctive, atmospheric and hypnotic style of techno music. He is the founder of Dozzy Records and co-founder of Spazio Disponibile. To mark the 303rd release on Tresor, Dozzy created Filo Loves The Acid, an expertly produced throbbing exercise in acid, underpinned by his velvety techno.

Beginning her creative journey in formative years with classical music and dance training, Sophia would later become engulfed by electronic rhythm. Tbilisi born and internationally bred, Saze formed a foundation to pierce deeper into these sounds by first launching her party and later label in Brooklyn – Dusk & Haze. Saze’s full circle home-run came after years of touring, when she found a nest in a city at the core of her upbringing, Philly. As a producer, her musical versatility draws from a wide array of shapes and expressions, from electro to krautrock, ambient to industrial, and acid to garage - embracing the drifting range in the waves of emotional fluidity, and plunging into higher tides of fathomless feeling, possibility.

A rare mix from the originator of Techno, Juan Atkins, as part of the celebration of three decades of Tresor, the German nightclub, label, and institution.

Recorded at the Tresor club in Berlin at the beginning of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside-down, the mix spans the full spectrum of sub-genres that Techno has evolved into from its beginnings with Juan and his peers in 1980s Detroit. As such the mix is true testament to the genre from one of its founding fathers.

Juan’s classic track I Love You features on the forthcoming Tresor 30 compilation - 52 tracks of classics and exclusive commissions that map the flight path of Techno from the pioneers to the producers of today and tomorrow. This alongside the recent reissue of the seminal 3MB record Juan made alongside Moritz Von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann perfectly encapsulates the long-lasting connection between Juan Atkins and Tresor, between Detroit and Berlin.

Dion McKenzie known as TYGYPAW is a one-person army on a mission to highlight inclusivity and displacement through sound. Originally from Mandeville, Jamaica, and based in Brooklyn, New York, TYGAPAW is a polymathic artist injecting their Jamaican heritage into techno. Operating at the intersections of their musical and cultural roots, TYGAPAW infuses the raw energy of dancehall with their signature emotional club sound. The self-taught producer founded monthly club nights Shottas, No Badmind and Fake Accent, creating platforms and spaces for QTIPOC. Fake Accent also functions as TYGAPAW's own imprint, which aims to platform and centre black electronic music artists.

Driven by a relentless, throbbing bass that bubbles in and around the other elements of the track, Diffusus is a jet-propelled ride across the unknown aquazone, an indispensable dancefloor weapon for the post-4am crowd, a true Tresor future classic.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of ‘The Final Frontier’ in shaping modern electronic music. First released in 1992 by the unapologetically political Detroit collective, Underground Resistance, it remains an essential classic in the story of Techno. Underground Resistance’s stated objective was to “[electrify] the inner city with hi-tech, sci-fi thoughts and dreams”; to offer working-class Black Americans, through music, a vision of a bright future through community action. Final Frontier was the first of many tracks which underlined this mission in bold type.

The great Afrofuturist tradition of imagining Black emancipation through space travel is upfront; both in the Star Trek-referencing title, as well as in the music itself, which sounds like the perfect re-scoring to the “Stargate” scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now, nearly 30 years after it was first unleashed, there is not a serious techno fan who does not consider this to belong on the highest echelon of electronic music’s Pantheon.

Closely following the release of the last Borderland single, the focus returns on Transport, the last collaborative album by Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald. 

Long time friend and studio partner of Moritz von Oswald, Carl Craig provides a new take on “Transport”. Extending and stripping the original sequence to its bone, the illustrious Planet E president and illustrious Detroit proponent also summons a stepping drum sequence and a swaying array of moving delays. This 12“ edit is cut on the A-side.

The full version of Carl Craig’s remix clocks just above 20 minutes and is available digitally. Both are available to anyone who purchases the record, through the enclosed download card.

On the flip, DJ Deep & Roman Poncet rework Carl Craig’s remix, adding their signature grooves and myriad of tough drums, to full effect.

Synonymous with Detroit, Techno, and Tresor, Scan 7 have remained protagonists of the Berlin-Detroit axis since it was first forged in the sweaty obsidian of the club’s original Wertheim vault home. Now, over 20 years later, the masked techno collective pay tribute to the triptych’s matted histories on ‘The Resistance EP’.

With identifiable nods to Scan 7’s Underground Resistance affiliations – the label that launched the group, and whose militaristic and political philosophies can be found littered throughout their discography – the EP begins with quintessential Detroit strings and groove before delving into darker techno territory. On the A-side, “The Resistance” offers an uplifting and delightfully nostalgic jaunt through dance music past, using all those favourite and immortal house tropes to deliver instant gratification. Meanwhile, the B-side shows off Scan 7 as masters of warm, yet shadowy techno – plus their trademark drum work – in the hypnotic “Why Not?” and driving, basement-ready “In & Out Of The Groove”. 

Alongside many outings on Tresor’s renowned compilation series, Scan 7 produced two albums for the label – ‘Dark Territory’ in 1996, followed up by ‘Resurfaced’ in 1999 – before leader TrackMasta Lou’s Cratesavers Muzik took over as the group’s primary recording outlet. ‘The Resistance EP’ is a welcomed return to Tresor from one of its stalwart artists, and paves the way for a retrospective compilation on 20 years of Scan 7, due out at the close of the year.


A1. Scan 7 - The Resistance

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, where a whiplash flicked back and forth in time to a rhythm; this unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin. The ongoing closure due to the coronavirus pandemic poses significant difficulties. These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and pushed deeper connections beyond Germany. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kickstart dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit and Birmingham, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. This compilation marks 30 years of activity, from luminaries present right at the beginning, through to contemporary protagonists - who have come together to manipulate our landscape further. Each of them re-defines this electronic sound as it contorts and manoeuvres around modern pressures and technological flux. 

From Detroit, we hear the humble magic of Terrence Dixon, that echoes its worn down environments, to New York City and Speaker Music’s pertinent message of resistance. Helena Hauff’s neck-snapping electro deepens the path set by Drexciya and Stingray. Moritz von Oswald’s expansive, dubbed-out constructions exposed an abstracted take on techno, an approach extended by the likes of Donato Dozzy and Huerco S. These artists conjure ecstatic vertigos through sound, that bind you to the people around you, creating an atmosphere where our collective imaginings become strong. 

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
