Vibrant acid tracks knead muscular electronic dance structures on Gerald Brunson’s debut EP. A member of the Model 500 extended family and running Dance Sacred Records, Brunson presents a restless world that beckons forth from the underground of the Midwest, full of bouncing flair and techno passion. 

01 Hoffman's S.O.S. (Scully, Owsley, Sand) is more than a mere head nod to the alchemists participating in the League for Spiritual Discovery and The Brotherhood of Eternal Love. It induces a pristine acid trip that twists neurons about agitated filtered effects and effective rhythmic structures. Finally, it emerges into wondrous vistas of ever-expanding horizons. Blue Striped Felix worms deep into the groove with the same brawn, its components lean and unceasing. 

Over on the flip side, 2way struts a mean dance, stripping out the previous track’s acid melodies into something far more focused on repetition with an electro influence shining through. This electro sound beams forward even more into a mutant funk on Morf. The synths move squeakily as if the machine got jammed into enlightenment. Unexpected beat changes flick over to a four to the floor briefly, before out of nowhere chords invite the closing moments in with an eventual melodic response to the dancing synths. 

Brunson's tracks represent a unique sound. Techno is as real as the person who experiences it, and these tracks come from an enigmatic messenger who is firmly out on a limb.

Andy Toth casts a long shadow in the Detroit scene. From being co-founder of the Detroit Grand Pubahs to working as an engineer and mixer, he’s worked on so many records that you know but in his egoless way, didn’t know he was part of. Being the co-author of “Sandwiches” took him around the world, but more importantly it was the hold music for Mudgie’s, a legendary Detroit Deli run by another long standing denizen of the Detroit underground, Greg Mudge. Greg Mudge was a true pillar of our techno community in Detroit, from showing us the venue for the first leaky roof No Way Back, to throwing his own events and supporting great people. One of those people was Andy Toth, who he was constantly pressuring to release his music, and this became a major theme of Greg Mudge’s memorial.  When Greg suddenly passed last September, some friends came in to DJ his memorial like Derek Plaslaiko. When it was Andy Toth’s turn he played only his own productions and we were all just so blown away. Mudgie was always asking Andy “what’s up with those tracks?” And this record is the answer,  a testament to that thought, and to the deeply layered and detailed work of Andy Toth. Andy has created a uniquely dense Detroit Sci Fi trip through sound, with elements of acid, electro, techno that result in an advanced and mature adventure in sound, reflecting his roots in the Detroit scene, but pushing it into new hypnotic futures, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Today we host a stellar premiere from one of the most illustrious producers within the electro scene, Controlled Weirdness. The South London bass merchant arrives on the coveted imprint, Cultivated Electronics with a four track EP that screams vintage electro.

Controlled Weirdness has remained somewhat in the shadow’s of the electro scene, known best for his monthly radio show on Threads, his Presence Unknown label and Electric Sweat events. The DJ and producer is very much intwined in the London scene, yet remains to some degree on the fringes, making the EP name In The Shadows impeccably fitting.

The Londoner has been rocking the decks and perfecting his craft since the mid-’80s when as a youngster, Electro and early ’80s pirate radio started his obsession with electronic music and he played his first gig at “The House of Dolls” in Farringdon where he soon became resident. After a stint in New York from 1989 he met Joel Bevacqua aka DJ Deadly Buda, who after returning to his hometown of Pittsburgh invited Neil (Controlled Weirdness) to play at the first ever rave there in 1991, leading to a 6-month stint of events.

Upon Neil’s return to London in 1992 he started a radio show on pirate station Chillin FM alongside his sister, Stacey (later known as NoYeahNo). Many more events followed until in 1996 and then he formed Unearthly Records. Since then, he has played worldwide from plush clubs to dirty warehouses and has appeared on a variety of labels including Audio Illusion, Control Tower, Praxis, Zhark, Dirty Needles, Fdb and Still Raven.

As Controlled Weirdness arrives on sister label of Cultivated Electronics, Cultivated Electronics LTD which specifies in vinyl only releases he brings with a quartet of prime electro cuts. The four track EP is ripe with tough electro rhythms, timeless acid lines and earthy soundscapes.

Corona Acid does exactly what it says on the tin. A rolling acid soaked club tool that simmers through unwavering 303 lines and heavy 808 bass drums. This is the perfect track to set the tone for the club, or on the other hand wind it down. Top shelf electronic music, from an unsung hero of electro.

Four Four Premiere: Controlled Weirdness - Corona Acid [Cultivated Electronics LTD]

Oscean comes out firing from the outset on their new 12" entitled Multirays. The Argentinian duo of Andrés Zacco and Sebastián Galante are following up on the first release of their collaboration, Ideoma, also released on Tresor Records. With Multirays, this burgeoning collaboration reveals a promising evolution, moving into more rhythmically diverse environments and playful structures.

The opening track, Multidimensional, strikes with confronting beats and a searching, woolly bass sound. Constantly growing, it moves confidently with its skittering percussion work, ebbing and flowing through filter movements and expansive synths. Invisible Rays draws in breathing techno pulses, as Zacco and Galante cast drenches of feedback across the spectrum. A deceptively mellow melody, recalling Spiral from their debut EP, teases at a deeper melodic progression, but the focus stays locked on the animated rhythms, tempting towards divergent grooves but expertly keeping feet on the floor.

In Drivion, Oscean investigates electro territories, simultaneously bubbling and driving. Echoed arpeggiations and upfront beats funnel impulses between neurons. Broad synth gestures offer gateways into abstraction before, without barely a hint, the rhythms beat once more. On the closing track, Horisonsz, the duo drive forth through skipping rhythms and soul-searching bass murmurs. Synth pads beckon with fresnel lens reflections and rising warmth, motioning towards a stunning moment of euphoria, where futurist mirages coexist with distant memories.

Electronic icon Helena Hauff returns with first new track of 2022 with ‘Touching Plastic’

When it comes to hard-hitting electronic music, there are few more iconic names than Helena Hauff. The Hamburg-born producer and DJ has been less-than-quietly revolutionising the sound of techno and electro since her emergence on the scene at the turn of the 2010s. Her forward thinking style of production and mixing that relies on both genres’ more analog sounds has helped to inform a wildly popular subset of selectors that prefer their sonics hard-edged, hypnotic, and wildly exhilarating. While touring relentlessly over the last 12 months, 2022 has not seen a release from Hauff until today, with the announcement of this 12", Living With Ladybirds; her first EP of 2022 to be released on 11th November via fabric Originals.

Nerve Collect is a new label co-founded by Dutch collaborators Identified Patient and Gamma Intel. The first release is Identified Patient's Elevator Music for Headbangers EP and it comes digitally with two bonus cuts, or as a six-track 12". It's a freaky journey into exactly the sort of leftfield electronics to expect going forwards complete with AI artwork by Nina van den Berg and Design by Sander Molenaar.

Amsterdam's Identified Patient has an off-the-hook approach that's seen him spend the last six years colliding techno, acid, breaks and dub into futurist sound worlds full of irresistible discomfort. With all that experience of playing Europe's most open-minded dance floors, he is now truly dialed into what works for him. He is making deeper-than-ever connections between what he hears in his head, what he plays, and what he makes. Now speaking clearly through his machines, Nerve Collect marks the start of an all-new conversation based around dark energy, paranoid tension and otherwordly seduction.

The first EP features music written between 2019 and 2022 and takes you deep into the netherworld. It feels both dystopian yet inviting, with hefty bass and twitchy acid that will make both brain and body dance. There's a taughtness right from the off when 'Walk With Me' marries cavernous and booming kicks with bright flashes of acid. 'You Are the Loop' is an AI hallucination with mangled synths, while 'The Fun Never Stops' is psyched-out mutant jungle. The b-side keeps on building with the dark and pressurised energy of 'Dead Demo' and screw-face swagger of 'The Devil is Blue' leading into the final cut 'Second-Hand Nostalgia' which is an industrial take on trip-hop. The bonus cuts spin out yet further into intergalactic electro-techno warfare and controlled rhythmic chaos.

The mind-melting sonics of this first release proves Nerve Collect is here to do things differently.

Moving firmly into its fourth decade, Tresor Records launches a new 12″ series, with a new generic sleeve design, intentionally available at affordable prices as an antidote to high vinyl costs.

In April 2023, Tresor Records will unveil a new EP from DALO entitled “GUM”. DALO, aka Nadia D’Alo, is one of the founders of the R.i.O label and half of the duo INIT. After several years of performing as INIT with Benedikt Frey, she had her solo live debut in Berlin in 2022. This record follows releases on labels such as ESP Institute and Warning. “GUM” showcases DALO’s expert mastery of rising tension through analogue sound sources, as it swings in and remains with minimal changes and accentuation.

PREMIERE: DALO - Backlash (Tresor)

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
