It's already been 5 years since the last Zombie Zombie album "Rituels d’un Nouveau Monde" has been released, after which the group has explored other territories by signing 2 film scores; "Loubia Hamra" by Narimane Mari and "Irréprochable" by Sébastien Marnier, as well as creating the music accompanying a contemporary circus show called "Slow Futur" by Martin Palisse and Elsa Guérin.
Wouldn't these beautiful parentheses make you want to return to the sources? After 10 years at Versatile Records, 2017 also marks the anniversary of the release of their first album "A Land for Renegades" in 2007, at the time considered to be one of the 10 best albums of the year according to Rough Trade.
This new opus "Livity" seems to plunge us into science fiction, with a cover designed by the mythic cartoonist Philippe Druillet, who is also the founder of the Métal Hurlant comic series. The title of the album is somewhat misleading, as one could think of a certain dub record made in Jamaica at the famous Compass Point studio at the Bahamas. If you didn't know, "livity" or "life force" is actually a Rastafarian concept. The record was finally recorded last winter in Paris, in a very short time frame. 7 tracks played live in 7 days, by Etienne Jaumet (synthesizers / rhythm box / metallophone / sax), Cosmic Neman (drums / vocals / sound effects), and Dr. Schonberg (percussion / electronics / trumpet), recorded at the Red Bull Studios by Thibaut Javoy and Jerome Caron, their 2 very competent engineers. To keep it in the family, the album was then mixed by another member of the Versatile stable, the mysterious and legendary DJ/producer I:Cube, done in the label's studio, Victor Studio.
On this album the principles that are dear to the group rest being respected, still as far as always from the standards of 'radio play'. A living kind of music, composed of long instrumental moments recorded with analog synthesizers and drum machines, accompanied by drums and percussion. But I:Cube's touch may bring that unique energy that one finds at the group's concerts; on certain titles like Livity (with its classic 808 drum kick club side, well ahead and bewitching with jungle sounds recorded in Laos) and especially on Hippocampe, which gives the impression of hearing an old school hip hop rhythm with the power of a metal band, having replaced their guitars by synthesizers: recommended to listen to in a convertible at the ring road.
The cinematic connotation is still strong, on titles like "Ils existent.." or "Acera", originally composed for ciné-concerts accompanying films by Jean Painlevé et Maurice Pialat. The energy of the beginning is still very present, as is - of course - the kraut inspiration. But it's also an album that takes new directions, like on “Looose”, which brings to mind the "Art Ensemble of Chicago", like a groove of James Chance in New York in the early 80's, with the free sax solos of Etienne Jaumet and Dr. Schonberg with the trumpet. The group also offers some slower and calmer titles, like "Heavy Meditation", as well as to explore new more experimental tracks in the line of French 70's groups such as Lard Free or Richard Pinhas, for example on the bonus track "Black Moon".

In just a few years, french (& parisian based) duo Trésors have developed a unique sonic trademark, free of preconceived standards. Regardless of any space & time, the band has been able to intertwine 70's & 80's influences, facing its role as an outsider without taking into account surrounding trends. After having released "Missionnaires", recorded in Baltimore and produced by Chester Gwazda (Future Islands, Dan Deacon), Trésors embarked on a long tour that ended at famous french festival La Route du Rock. A few months later, the duo played an exclusive performance at Le Palais de Tokyo to accompany the release of their short film "Pleine Lune" which was co-written with Samuel Kaperski. Instead of rushing in the studio, the band decided to take their time, start fresh and explore new creative paths.

Written throughout the years 2013 and 2014, the tracks from this new repertoire took shape close to the ocean, from an empty house in Normandy to an artist studio near the Mediterreanean sea. Without having composed beforehand, Trésors pressed the "record button" and let their imagination run free to better improvise, assembling their sound collages using a purposely limited amount of instruments (guitars, synthesizers, horns and percussions) and then sampling them.

Recorded, mixed and produced by the band itself, this sophomore album explores new musical paths & more organic sounds, evoking artists such as Lee Perry, Arthur Russell, Durutti Column or Frank Ocean. It conveys sometimes nostalgic feelings, at other times more aquatic impressions, creating a mixture between post punk & a more loosened ambient. It's the album of a band that has written a new chapter of its creative life, brushing further away from its contemporaries to meet its most personal manifesto: "ADRIEN"
