Tune in for this month's episode of https://soundcloud.com/francescamackay 's Architextures radio show, this time focused on one of the most significant cultural movements in Brazil: Tropicália ⚡️
The term Tropicália was first coined by artist Hélio Oiticica, for an artwork of the same name, which he exhibited at MAM Rio in 1967. The piece demonstrated Oiticica’s desire to give contemporary art a specifically Brazilian character to subvert the “purity” of European modernism. Some trace Tropicália back to 1928, and Oswald de Andrade's Anthropophagic Manifesto. Andrade’s main argument was that Brazil’s history of “cannibalising” (or absorbing and creating something new) from other cultures was its greatest strength.
The ideas presented in this essay helped to inspire a wider cultural and political shift in Brazil. A year later, in 1968, the Tropicália movement was epitomised by the album Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis by musicians Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, Nara Leão, Torquato Neto, and Rogério Duprat. The album came to be considered the defining sound of the Tropicália movement. The artists involved created a new exotic version of pop, being as influenced by psychedelia as it was by samba, bossa nova and more traditional South American genres. Tropicália created musical and cultural anarchy, a revolution in Brazilian sound.

Pablo Valentino: Live from Kasheme (Zurich) - January 2023

For the 10th entry in our mix series we have received a new transmission from academic, world adventurer, and king of the wrong-speed record Joe Greenbaum. I first met Joe at a Chicago underground party, and got to know him while he was working at Gramaphone Records. For about 2 years I got to witness Joe work his turntable magic weekly at WNUR. His radio show saw him flexing his eclectic taste and adventurous use of time-stretching to blend tracks together, often pitching records up or down 50% or more. On many occasions the tracks he would play would actually be Trance. Gabber, or Drum n bass records morphed beyond recognition. For his Moments mix, Joe starts us off with a pitched sound collage that slowly morphs into a drug chug beat, gradually moving into italo and disco, before closing us out with slowed down acid-trance.
