Before Theo joins us in room 2 this Friday, he has kindly provided a stellar mix for our CKFM series. 

Growing up between Scotland and Greece he's since held down residencies with Edinburgh’s Cab Vol & Glasgow's Sub Club and has steadily become one of the country’s hottest musical exports. 

He has released music on labels such as Permanent Vacation, DGTL & Shall Not Fade. Alongside his musical career, Theo has established himself as a promoter and label founder with Beautiful Strangers. Started in 2018, the label, distributed by !K7 Records has reached over 1m streams. His parties are gaining momentum too, welcoming artists such as KiNK, Ryan Elliott, Saoirse, Optimo, Move D & Kerri Chandler and running a yearly event during Off Sonar in Barcelona.

He’s received recognition from the likes of BBC Radio 1 (Hottest Record In The World) and featured on the Boiler Room, DGTL & Circoloco mix series.

1,000% positive vibe house heaters. Inspired by seeing my teenage hero @djsashaofficial play a quality warehouse party this weekend, I threw in some late 90s progressive house tracks that got me into this music 20+ years ago. It’s an energy changeup from the chill previous two installments. Listen to it in the gym, not watering your plants :) 

I set out to make this mix series positive and consistent, which is pretty much the opposite of the environment I find myself in. DC is a strange place to be an optimist, especially now as my civil servant colleagues in government are being laid off left and right with little explanation. 

So what keeps me positive aside from surrounding myself with great music? Well, I had a conversation on Friday with someone I greatly respect who laid out a case for why this country is irreparably f-ed. While there weren’t exactly holes in her argument, I would argue that similar cases could have been made at pretty much any point in history. Yet most would choose to live in this moment over almost any other. 

No one knows the future and we as individuals have limited control over it. But we can choose to believe that a better tomorrow, a better next week, a better next year and a better next generation could possible. We can choose to do what we can to make it so, in our own lives and for others. That’s always seemed like a more attractive approach to me than assuming the worst. 

The moral arc of a great DJ mix is long, but it bends towards justice.

Spencer Kincy AKA Gemini recorded this mix for Boomtown Records of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada circa 1999(?). Spencer, as a producer and a DJ, had the innate ability to build soundscapes with deep, minimal, soulful tracks and also lay down some super heavy beats with a tribal/tech edge that would blow you away.  His catalogue of productions as well as his DJ sets were full of unexpected and transcendent moments of psychedelia, abstract dissonance, explosive volume, and full on freak outs. He was an enigma as an artist and has become a subject shrouded in mystery as a man. If you listen closely to this mix, I'm sure you can find some real insight into the musical spirit of this very inspirational and influential Chicago underground legend.

When Gerald just moved to berlin, he got his house and his studio inside that very inspiring and artistic place, and as a tribute and homage to his legendary figure, some mysterious writer draw G's face on the right side of that building with the shamanic enigma above that giant mural "How Long Is Now", an existential sigh or question that perfectly sums up the uncertain past, present and future of one of Berlin's most important initiatives, as the Tacheles was, and as the things of our life that we love, as the music, can be, uncertain…But for sure this 3 tracker vinyl is real and it will last for long in our bags, these are 3 deadly club weapons by The Master between bass music, micro funk and soul excursions: A1 gives the title to the EP and it's subliminal dark and psychedelic after-hours dope session, while on B1 there's the shady and sexy atmosphere of "Groove of the Ghetto", a driving and funky house tune sustained by an ultra fat synth bass and enriched by soulful vocals and deep pads, while on B2 the EP ends wih the brutal Uk bass bonus beats monster entitled "202". 
Serious Stuff. In memory of Tacheles and the good old days.
