Danny McLewin aka Skyrager is one of my favorite people on the planet. His ability to dig out rare unheard of bangers and drop them hot on the dance floor sums up all the reasons we love to go out. Based out of England, Danny travels the world spreading love through music with the group Psychemagik and under his solo moniker Skyrager. An avid record collector and dealer, I'm always so excited to comb through all his mixes. Before After Hours takes you on a blissful musical odyssey. Dj Müll bids farewell to summer with some exciting new releases and a guest who fully embodies the Spirito Balearico: Gallo, pillar of the Hell Yeah label, member of the Balearic Gabba Sound System crew and resident of Buena Onda. In his mix, he wanted to recreate that feeling of floating on the border between day and night, suspended between warmth and mystery.

I wanted to work my way up from 110bpm house (think David Morales Def mixes) to peaktime records and it flowed nicely and ended up being one of my most fun sets in a while, there's something special about going from an empty club to it being packed out.

Aladdin is an atypical project at Versatile, even for Versatile's standards. In the base, the group consisted of Nicolas Ker — singer, chaotic poet (known from Poni Hoax, Paris, and his solo project yet to emerge) — and Gilbert Cohen, boss of the label. The two met in the studio after breaking up with their then-girlfriends, resulting in an album filled with inner pressure. “We were strong so we got lost”, released only on cd in June 2011, selling only 400 copies. And since then... nothing. But thanks to a one-week studio session offered by a brand of energy drink, they met again, attracting Syd Barrett-influenced guitarist Eat Gas as a new member, to record new material. Besides Eat Gas and his haunted guitars, other musicians were lured to the studio to contribute to the latest Aladdin EP: “Girls in Uniform”. Long jam sessions took place, featuring motorik drummer Mark Kerr, bass player Juan de Guillebon, and percussionist Francesco Lopez playing Brazilian percussions like the berimbau, and — hold your breath — the mouth harp. With a cast alike, you’ll understand the listening experience will be a hybrid one ; in between rock, dub, kraut, interrupted by a break in the form of a strange fairy tale... Trevor Jackson has been a staunch supporter of the previous album, so asking him for a remix was an obvious choice. Glorified by the success of his compilation on the On-U Sound label, he swings in a remix dark as hell but with an unstoppable heavy groove. At last, Gilb’R delivers a smoky dub, one of the first recordings to roll out of his new Amsterdam studio.

After the success of last year’s multi-edition album release ‘F O R M A T’ via The Vinyl Factory, the critical acclaim of his ‘Science Fiction Dancehall Classics’ On-U Sound compilation and the ‘Metal Dance’ series for Strut, Trevor Jackson is back in 2016 with the long-awaited return of his much loved PLAYGROUP project.

“Inspired by the hedonistic early days of house, disco, post punk, electro and dub, these tracks reflect a unique moment in time”, explains Trevor. “The emergence of underground club culture in New York, London, Chicago, Paris and Northern Italy was driven by pioneering DJ’s playing a wildly diverse soundtrack to a passionate, dance driven and open minded audience. It was a sensory overload of chemicals, bass, smoke, sweat, sex and danger; a testament to the non-air conditioned, non-i-Phone infested and non- corporate clubbing days of yore.”

Targeted directly at the modern dance floor, many of the tracks were freshly re-edited and tweaked with the assistance of Sasha Crnobrnja from In Flagranti. Ed DMX lends a helping hand on one track, two feature the vocals of Mike Z from the seminal new wave band Crash Course In Science, and a young Kieran Hebden (AKA Four Tet) plays guitar on the final EP’s lead track.

Released as series of 9 limited edition vinyl-only EPs over a period of 9 weeks, the 30 tracks featured are a collection of reworked demos and unreleased recordings. Still sounding as relevant today as they did when initially created during the writing process of the debut PLAYGROUP album from 1997-2001. 
Packaged in a collection of 9 individual sleeves that, as a full set, combine to make a single image featuring a photo by legendary photographer Bill Bernstein, they’re as much a testament to Trevor Jackson’s visual ability as his musical one.
